Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1941, Walter Farley wrote a novel that would begin an enduring series. With a protagonist named Alec Ramsay, what book is this?

Answer: The Black Stallion

Walter Farley ended up writing about twenty books related to the original "The Black Stallion". I confess I read at least half of them as a teenager. The original book was made into a visually beautiful movie in 1979, starring Mickey Rooney as the trainer, Terri Garr as Alec's mom and four gorgeous black arabian horses - pretty cool when two horses actually have "stunt doubles"!
2. "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was a television show based on the memoirs of Greg "Pappy" Boyington and ran from 1976 to 1978 in the U.S. Who played Boyington on the show?

Answer: Robert Conrad

Robert Conrad's characters were as enjoyed by women as they were by men. A "man's man", he also starred in the television series "Wild Wild West". Known as a "tough guy" he did quite well in the "come on, I dare ya" commercials for Eveready batteries.

The T.V. show takes place during World War II and involves a U.S. fighter squadron based in the Solomon Islands. A young John Larroquette played 2nd Lieutenant Robert Anderson on the show.

The real Black Sheep Squadron was led at some points by Pappy Boyington and was originally based in Oahu, Hawaii. They saw time all over the Pacific during the war including raids on Okinawa and Japan. The Black Sheep Squadron was still being used as a Marine Attack Squadron into the 21st Century.
3. In F1 auto racing there are many flags which are used when needed by race officials to send signals to the drivers on the track. What does the waving of the black flag mean to an F1 driver?

Answer: Return to Pit

The black flag in F1 racing is never a good thing and is directed at individual racers and not the entire field. When the black flag is used along with a driver number, that driver has to return to their pit box and report to an official and their day is usually over.
4. As part of his "Tales of My Landlord" series, "Black Dwarf" was published in 1816 by what author - who might be better known for penning "Ivanhoe"?

Answer: Sir Walter Scott

All of the wrong answers were long dead by 1816.

The "Black Dwarf" is a story of a hermit who is involved in all kinds of intrigue, love, betrayal and accusations of association with the devil. It is presumably an allegory of the ongoing "disagreements" regarding the Scottish borders in the early 1700s.
5. What comic, known for his loud, angry and profane story telling style, wrote the book "Nothing's Sacred"?

Answer: Lewis Black

Lewis Black has been entertaining people with his insights and scathing rants directed at politicians, public figures and sometimes the public in general. He has toured across the English speaking parts of the world and was the first comedian to perform at the Walt Disney Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.

His diatribes about what happened to the milk he lovingly grew up on and the free water he enjoyed as a kid are classics. His brilliance didn't transfer to a weekly T.V. format as his show "Root of all Evil" did not last long.
6. Traditionally, wearing black clothes was for mourning deaths. But just prior to the Great Depression, the "little black dress" became a fashion statement. Who is this generally accredited to?

Answer: Coco Chanel

Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel first published a rendition of the "little black dress" in 1926, in "Vogue" magazine. Over the years, the idea has been remarkably successful and is still popular today, mostly due to being a "canvas" on which one can accessorise as individually as one would like to.

The most famous "LBD" is probably the one worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's". In 2006 it auctioned for over 400,000 GBP.
7. What first person shooter video game series has one of its games subtitled "Black Ops"?

Answer: Call of Duty

Published by Activision, the "Call of Duty" series of video games was released to critical acclaim in 2003. "Call of Duty: Black Ops" was the seventh game in the series and released in 2010. "Black Ops" takes place during the cold war and has the user playing various characters during the game.
8. When it comes to movies with the word "black" in the title, none seem to be more fun than the "Men in Black" series. Besides Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, what other person, known for versatile "character roles" for more than 50 years, starred in them?

Answer: Rip Torn

Vincent is a great character actor (otherwise known as an "actor's actor"), but he is not old enough to qualify for this question. Rip Taylor, a comedian, hasn't been up to much since the late '70s. Rip Van Winkle? zzzzzzzzz lol.
9. T'Challa, the heir to the throne of Wakanda, is better known by what name in Marvel comics?

Answer: The Black Panther

The Black Panther made his first appearance in "Fantastic Four #52" in 1966 and was created by Marvel creator Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He has had to battle both his uncle and brother for the throne of Wakanda and the country's rich supplies of the much sought after metal vibranium. He has been a member of the Avengers and Defenders at different times.
10. There are lots of entertainment stars who chose the colour black as part of their "image". But what performer has become "synonymous" with the nickname "the Man in Black"?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Yup, they're all known for the colour black. But Johnny Cash wrote the song called "Man in Black" with the following lyrics excerpt:
"We're doing mighty fine I do suppose / In our streak of lightning cars and fancy clothes / But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back / Up front there ought to be a man in black."

An amazing man, who, despite a "dark" history, cared very much about the poor, the war veterans and prisoners - there could be no other perfect "nickname" than "black".
