Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with 'Marvel Comics' flagship title. Which of the following events occurred in "Amazing Spider-Man" (Vol. 1) number 100 (September 1971)?

Answer: Spider-Man grew four extra arms.

Peter Parker wanted to get rid of his powers, and took an experimental formula that was intended to make that happen. Unfortunately, the formula backfired: he became more "spidery" than ever, and grew four new arms from his abdomen!

All other possible answers occurred well after "ASM" number 100.
2. "Marvel Team-Up" was a long-running title that usually featured Spider-Man and a special guest-star. With whom did Spidey team in "MTU" number 100 (December 1980)?

Answer: The Fantastic Four

Spidey and the FF teamed up (and fought each other -- twice!) in this interesting story written by "X-Men" scribe Chris Claremont and drawn by "Daredevil" writer/artist Frank Miller.
3. One more Spider-Man question. Issue number 100 of "Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man" (March 1985) ended on a cliffhanger: the parasitic costume that Peter had brought home from the "Secret Wars" planet waited in the shadows, ready to pounce on its former host and repossess him, perhaps forever. In the pages of which comic book would one find the conclusion of this cliffhanger?

Answer: The Web of Spider-Man

The end of "PPTSS" number 100 led directly into issue number one of an all-new title, "The Web of Spider-Man."
4. Who is the villain in "Flash" (Vol. 2) number 100 (April 1995)?

Answer: Kobra

Wally West, the third Flash, enlists a number of allies in his all-out war with cult leader Kobra.
5. In "Green Lantern" (Vol. 2) no. 100 (July 1998), Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan meet for the first time.

Answer: False

Kyle, the fourth Earthling to be assigned as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 (not counting Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern who was never chosen by the Guardians of the Galaxy) first met Hal Jordan, the Silver Age Green Lantern, in "Green Lantern" (Vol. 2) number zero (October 1994).
6. DC Comics' Vertigo imprint has boasted a number of successful and critically acclaimed titles. Which of the following Vertigo titles actually made it to its 100th issue?

Answer: Hellblazer

"Hellblazer" is still going strong as of December 2004, nearing its 200th issue. None of the other titles listed made it to number 100.
7. The 100th issue of "Superman" (Vol. 2, May 1995) featured a relatively new villain. Which one?

Answer: Conduit

"Superman" number 100, entitled "The Death of Clark Kent," featured Conduit, a kryptonite-powered villain who grew up as Kenny Braverman in Smallville with Clark Kent.
8. Which of these 1980's DC Comics titles ENDED with issue number 100?

Answer: Firestorm

Only "Firestorm" made it as far as one hundred issues, and its hundredth issue was its last. A new "Firestorm" series premiered in 2004.
9. "Marvel Two-In-One" was a title that, in the vein of "Marvel Team-Up," featured the Thing and a special guest-star in every issue. In issue number 100 -- the final issue of the series -- the Thing teamed up with a "civilian" whose name was familiar to fans of the Marvel Comics universe. Who was the special guest star in "MTIO" number 100?

Answer: Ben Grimm

The Thing, whose real name is Ben Grimm, traveled to an alternate universe of sorts in "MTIO" number 100, where he teamed up with his other-dimensional (and fully human!) counterpart.
10. "Legends of the Dark Knight" is a long-running DC series that usually focuses on Batman stories that take place in the past. True or False: issue number 100 was the first issue in the series in which Robin the Boy Wonder appeared.

Answer: True

"Legends" was almost always a playground for writers and artists who wanted to depict a pre-Robin Dark Knight...until issue number 100, which featured the origin of Robin I (Dick Grayson) and a back-up story starring Robin II (the ill-fated Jason Todd). The house ads for this issue used the tagline, "To every knight, a squire." I always liked that!
