Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Dick Tracy" comics story of Littleface Finny begins with Dick And Pat Patton following a speeding trolley. it fails to make a curve and crashes into a service station. We see the driver lying in the aisle, slitting the back of a seat and dropping something inside. What is he hiding?

Answer: diamonds

Mickey the bus driver is taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound and a cloth over his face. Joe Ballivan, a newspaper reporter sneaks in the hospital and finds where the diamonds are hidden. Keeping the action coming fast, Chester Gould has two gunmen arrive at the same time Ballivan finds the sparklers. On the run, he drops the diamonds in a mailbox before the gunmen catch him.
2. The two gunmen catch Joe Ballivan in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. Using a fire hydrant they attempt to get the whereabouts of the diamonds out of him with the high pressure water. What type of torture, which has been in the news since 9/11, is this similar to?

Answer: waterboarding

Tracy and Pat Patton show up in time to save Ballivan, who retrieves the jewels (which belong to his aunt) and tell them of a diamond stealing outfit he has found out about.
3. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip Mickey the bus driver believes he is dying and begins his confession to a nurse in the hospital. Two rather large, bulky women with veils enter the room and push the nurse out. What do they produce from under their cloaks?

Answer: tommy guns

They are, of course, men in drag. "That ends the confession," one says as they run from the murder scene. They then report to their boss, Littleface Finny.
Littleface is not the first 'grotesque' in Chester Gould's world. The Blank was arguably the first in 1937. However, he wasn't 'born that way', but was disfigured by a gunshot blast to his face, covering his ugliness with cheesecloth.
Scardol was the first impossibly ugly character in 1939.
The midget, Jerome Trohs and his huge wife Mamma weren't really ugly, but their being married served the same purpose.
However, Gould dropped the idea until here in 1941, possibly so his comic strip could compete with the actual headlines coming in from Europe.
4. In the "Dick Tracy" comic, Littleface lives several stories up in an apartment. One of his men used an initialed handkerchief to cover his face during a robbery, and it was noted in the papers. With one man holding the other, Littleface sets fire to the handkerchief while it is in his breast pocket, letting it burn him severely. There are witnesses. Who sees this act?

Answer: window washers

One of the washers reports the act and Tracy investigates. He takes the washers place on the scaffold, but Littleface recognizes him. His henchman holds up the policeman on the roof at gunpoint and unties one of the ropes holding the scaffold. The window washer manages to climb in a window, but Tracy falls and hangs on the scaffold by his hands.

Heroically the policeman on the roof dives at the gunman as he unties the second rope. The gunman's bullet hits a steel beam and in the scuffle the rope begins slipping.

The officer knocks the gunman out and stops the rope untying, burning his hands. Tracy has now fallen to a blank spot in the building wall, where there are no windows.
5. As Dick Tracy hangs from a window washers' scaffold far up the side of a building with no windows nearby, a woman looks at the scene from above. Without hesitation, she climbs out the window and down a slack rope hanging near the scaffold. What is her profession?

Answer: trapeze performer in a circus

Loma saves Tracy with her rope skills. As he gratefully drives her to the circus, they see a cab with a man's head sticking out of the back slowly sinking in the water of a park pond. The man is Littleface, who tried to take a cab away from his apartment.

The cab driver had a fare, but Littleface pulled a gun. The driver opened the cab up and knocked Littleface out, closing the back of the cab loosely around his neck. Regaining consciousness, Littleface kicked in the glass partition behind the cab driver which cut the cabbie's neck.

The out of control car went in the pond. After being rescued, Littleface grabbed an officers gun and took Loma into a nearby car. Littleface eventually shot the driver of the car and it crashed into a building.
6. In the "Dick Tracy" comic, Littleface's getaway car crashes into a building and he rolls Loma up in netting from a tennis court. He then makes a silent and somewhat speedy getaway on what?

Answer: bicycle

He stole the bike from a boy and pedaled away, leaving a blood trail in the road from his ankle which was cut when he kicked the glass partition in the cab.
The painful ankle caused him to abandon the bike and jump on the back of a truck. Tracy and Patton followed the blood to the abandoned bike where the trail ended.
7. Littleface hooks a ride on the back of a truck while attempting a getaway in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. The truck back up to a dock and Littleface runs in the first open door, hiding from the workers. The building is a meat locker and it is late in the day. What happens to Littleface?

Answer: he is locked in

Here we see Gould's best drawing of Littleface: collar turned up against the cold, beating on the door, with a cloud of frosty breath at his mouth staring at the thermometer. "TEN BELOW ZERO and they've locked me in!" The reader knows Littleface will be (and deserves to be) caught or killed, but Gould makes us feel real sympathy for the criminal as for the following week (in strip time) we feel his suffering as he tries to break out of the freezing room and fails.

Then he finds some cow hides to cover himself with.

He finds his fingers are already too stiff to break the bands so he resorts to biting them in two. The hides are stiff as boards. Eventually he settles into a very deep sleep with half frozen hides as a cover.
8. Workers to the meat locker find a nearly frozen Littleface Finny lying on the floor when they open the door in the morning. One of them recognizes him as a gangster and suddenly the greed for money comes over him. In the style of the "Dick Tracy" comic, what is this money hungry man's name?

Answer: Charley Yenom

Yenom gets the unconscious Littleface to his house, but finds the frostbite is too much for him to handle, and he calls a doctor. He plans to demand $10,000 for saving Finny's life.
9. In "Dick Tracy", the doctor takes one look at the severely frostbitten Littleface and says, "Ye Gods! Half the man's flesh will come off!" Things don't turn out quite so bad, however. He does have to amputate something, however. What does he amputate?

Answer: his ears

Littleface agrees to the $10,000 Yenom wants, but the boss at the meat locker sees the blood and calls the police. The other worker tells the whole story and Dick Tracy sets a watch on Yenom's house.
10. A truck pulls up to where Littleface is hidden while Dick Tracy is watching the building. The men take something into the building and bring it back, staggering under the weight. In the "Dick Tracy" strip, Tracy realizes they have removed Littleface. How did they carry him out?

Answer: rolled in a rug

Littleface is shown while his mug shots are taken, and once in jail Dick Tracy talks with him, assuring him the warden at the prison is a 'swell' guy. As Tracy shakes his hand, Littleface simply says, "Thanks, detective." In 2012, Littleface is shown getting out of prison (with ears due to plastic surgery).

A minion of the new Mr. Crime gets him immediately into their gang. However there is dissension in the new Crime gang, and Littleface realizes his mistake. He informs Tracy of the gang and helps in the ensuing raid. We also learn his real name in Leonard. "I was only a small time diamond thief," Littleface explains. "And you shook my hand."
