Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tracy and Pat Patton are filing fingerprint records late at night. Tracy stays until 3:00 AM and leaves in a driving rainstorm. Walking to a nearby street car station, he is aware of a large woman following him. He hears something swish above his head and is rather quickly taken away unconscious by the woman. What weapon did she use to subdue Tracy?

Answer: a whip

She wrapped the whip around Tracy's neck, choking him, then knocked him out with the butt. Then the huge woman carries Dick Tracy through back alleys into an old tenement where her henchman Emil waits. They shackled him to the wall, although the chains were long enough that Tracy could stand. She later told Tracy that she and her 'late' husband performed tricks with whips in vaudeville.
2. Chester Gould kept his "Dick Tracy" readers riveted to the strip on a daily basis. He didn't reveal who the large woman who held Tracy hostage was for weeks, while she fed Tracy (and the readers) small tidbits of information. When she mentioned her 'late' husband, Tracy found the woman had a picture of him. Where was the picture?

Answer: in her locket

Knowing the woman had a late husband, Tracy was aware that he was to be the victim of revenge. This led to one of my favorite lines in "Tracy": always tough as nails, Tracy says "Just tell me who the old man was and put a slug in my head. Let's clean this thing up!"
Mrs. Pruneface's response? "Oh Ha, ha, ha, ha!"
Obviously it wasn't going to be that easy.

Nearly all of Gould's villains of this era were grotesque, but to say that Mrs. Pruneface was ugly is an understatement. She was tall and robust with black holes for eyes, but her face was drawn tight as if it had been burnt, which she commented on at one time: "My face got this way as I fled the old country through enemy lines in a Z4 tank. Someone hurled a bottle of gasoline." She was the victim of a Molotov Cocktail.
She and Tracy exchanged barbs throughout his captivity. After Mrs. Pruneface mentioned her late husband, Tracy asks "Late? Just how late?" And then he added, "It fascinates me, my sweet, that you could have had a husband at all."
But she and Emil were busy planning his death and she ignored the comment.
3. The police department is frantic when Dick Tracy goes missing. Nobody can understand where the great detective could have gone. True to the "Dick Tracy" comic's form, a clue turns up. A boy brings an item he found a few blocks away into headquarters. It has Dick Tracy's name on it, and the boy wishes to meet Tracy. What did he find?

Answer: an ink pen

Taking Pat Patton and chief Brandon to the site, they investigate an alley nearby. This alerts a night watchman who tells them of seeing a large woman carrying a man in the rainstorm. He took them to the tenement which Mrs. Pruneface entered that night.
4. In "Dick Tracy", Mrs. Pruneface finally opens her locket and shows Tracy the picture of her husband. After much discussion on methods of killing Tracy, she and her servant Emil have decided. Emil sharpens a bolt to a point and drives it through a long board. Tracy is chained to the floor by his neck, ankles and wrists. The point of the bolt is suspended directly above his heart, with a refrigerator on the board for weight. What does Mrs. Pruneface depend on to slowly drive the spike through Tracy's heart?

Answer: the melting of ice

She orders 200 pounds of ice, which is delivered in two blocks. She puts the board on the ice blocks and turns the oven on high for good measure.
This is probably writer Chester Gould's most sadistic death trap. As Mrs. Pruneface and Emil leave via the sewer, a policeman stands outside the house. Pat and two other officers are also watching the house, and see the iceman make his delivery. But they have no reason to enter the tenement.
5. In the "Dick Tracy" comic's most sadistic death trap, we find Tracy chained to the floor by his neck, wrists and ankles. Directly above his heart is a long sharp spike driven through a board, which has a refrigerator resting atop it for weight. The board sets on two ice blocks which are slowly melting and moving the spike closer to his body. But as Tracy looks around he notices something which gives him a ray of hope. What did he notice?

Answer: the floor slopes

Tracy sees the baseboard on one side of the room is lower than the other. He finds he can raise his body and bump it on the floor, thereby sliding the blocks of ice slightly. He repeatedly bumps the floor, moving the spike far enough to miss his body.
Patton and an officer are at the door and hear the bumping noise, but only bust in when the noise stops, finding Tracy passed out with exhaustion.
6. On hearing Dick Tracy survived her attempt to kill him, Mrs. Pruneface now has to hide. Much like other "Dick Tracy" criminals such as Karpse and Pruneface, she decides to hide in plain sight, although she sends Emil out for makeup. She sees an ad for a job which she once held in 'the old country'. What job was it?

Answer: chef

Mrs. Pruneface easily landed a job at the 'swanky' Hotel St. Fude, and soon found herself in the favor of the Mayor who loves her cooking.
Back at headquarters, we find Tracy sketching a picture of Mrs. Pruneface for the newspaper. One of the policemen comments, "Ye Gods! She doesn't look human!"
Tracy replies, "She isn't human-at least as we understand the term."
7. In Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy" comic, Mrs. Pruneface goes off to work and leaves her servant, Emil, behind with orders not to leave the apartment. He quickly becomes bored and searches her grip. Inside he finds the whip she used to subdue Tracy. Playing with it, he drops it out the window--and into the hands of a policeman. When she returns from her job and finds it gone, what does Mrs. Pruneface do to Emil?

Answer: beats him to death

Mrs. Pruneface is not very sentimental about Emil's death: "He was my faithful servant for twenty years. Oh, well.."
She abandons her apartment and when Dick Tracy investigates the death of Emil, he finds only one clue: sugar cubes from the Hotel St. Fude.
8. In the "Dick Tracy" comic we find the Mayor offering the disguised Mrs. Pruneface, who goes by the name Marie, a job at his house. It turns out her favorite dish and his are the same. What taste do they share?

Answer: onion soup

Mrs. Pruneface is in need of a room, and as she and the Mayor argue about his job offer, she sees Tracy sitting at a table through the open door. He had come to Hotel St. Fude because of the sugar cube he found near the murdered Emil.
Mrs. Pruneface immediately accepts the job and moves to the Mayor's house.
9. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Mrs. Pruneface is hiding out as a cook in the Mayor's house. His two daughters are drinking and carousing late one night with some young men when an accident occurs. They are carrying Mrs. Pruneface on their shoulders while singing and trip. One of the boys named Chuck and Mrs. Pruneface fall. Where did they fall?

Answer: in the pool

The others run off to a nearby bar. Falling in the water tears off Mrs. Pruneface's disguise and Chuck recognizes her. She immediately drowns him and retrieves her disguise from the pool. Writer Chester Gould is at his best as the reader sees the two girls who have run away laughing with friends about leaving Chuck and 'Marie' in the pool.

In the next panel we see Chuck floating face down in the pool.
10. Dick Tracy has pieced together where Mrs. Pruneface has been hiding and calls at the Mayor's house. There is confusion when he finds the mayor furious about the body in the pool and his daughters returning home as the sun comes up. As Tracy and Patton finally prepare to enter the kitchen to arrest Mrs. Pruneface, shots ring out. They find Mrs. Pruneface dead on the floor. Who killed her?

Answer: the mayors wife

The Mayor's wife had been bedridden for years. She saw Mrs. Pruneface without her disguise through a window, got out of her wheelchair and walked to the door. ("because I HAD to"). Mrs. Pruneface had a gun, but the Mayor's wife shot first.
Kind of a corny ending, but it worked.
