Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following comic book magazines printed the first story starring Doctor Strange?

Answer: Strange Tales

"Strange Tales" #110, July 1963 was the first issue that starred our favorite mystic. "Strange" was a mini-series that came out in 2004 with a reworked origin story. "Doctor Strange" was Doc's regular magazine that came out in several volumes (1968-1968, 1974-1987 and 1988-1996). Each volume failed to maintain necessary circulation numbers and was cancelled. "Marvel Premiere" was an anthology series where Marvel tried out characters and storylines before giving the go-ahead for their own magazines.

They featured Doctor Strange stories in 1973-1974!
2. Doctor Strange has always been known as the Sorcerer Supreme.

Answer: False

Doctor Strange was originally introduced to audiences as "Master of Black Magic" in "Strange Tales" #110, July 1963. He was subsequently referred to as "The Master of the Mystic Arts", starting in "Strange Tale" #117, February 1964. Doctor Strange didn't become Sorcerer Supreme until his mentor, The Ancient One, became "One with the Universe", in "Marvel Premiere" #10, September 1972!
3. Which of the following characters is not an ally of Doctor Strange?

Answer: Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom, while more familiar as an arch-enemy of the Fantastic Four, is in fact, one of Doctor Strange's occasional enemies. Agamotto, Oshtur and Hoggoth are all ancient powerful creatures that make up the triumvirate known as the Vishanti. Doctor Strange calls upon them frequently to power his spells!
4. Complete the following incantation: Seven rings has Raggadorr, indigo to deepest black, but Oshtur grant me something more, crimson Bands of ________!

Answer: Cyttorak

One of my favorite Doctor Strange spells when I would read Doctor Strange as a child! Doc uses it in "Doctor Strange" Volume II, #9, August 1974. Like this one, many of Doctor Strange's spells rhyme! Burton and Copperfield are real-life stage magicians, Gandalf was the wizard in "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.
5. What color is the Cloak of Levitation that Doctor Strange usually wears?

Answer: red with yellow trim

The Cloak of Levitation was a gift from his mentor, The Ancient One!
6. Doctor Strange resides in a house at 177A Bleecker Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, NY. What does he refer to his home as?

Answer: Sanctum Sanctorum

Castle Mordo is the ancestral home of Doctor Strange's arch-enemy, Baron Mordo. It is located in Central Europe in the Carpathian Mountains!
7. Which of the following characters has not been an apprentice of Doctor Strange?

Answer: Captain America

Captain America is a superhero dating from World War II. He has not been involved in magic at any time in his career as an apprentice to anyone, let alone our favorite Doctor! Rintrah apprenticed with Doc after meeting him at the home of Enitharmon the Weaver ("Doctor Strange" Volume II #78, August 1986), who was repairing Doctor Strange's Cloak of Levitation at the time. Clea is an other-dimensional princess from the Dark Dimension, where she met Doctor Strange("Strange Tales" #126, November 1964).

She aided Doctor Strange against his arch-enemy, The Dread Dormammu and subsequently became his lover and apprentice. Kyllian Kell Boddicker was Doc's apprentice for a short time to get better control of his druidic powers. The story is told in "Doctor Strange Annual" #3, 1993
8. Doctor Strange has several artifacts from the entity, Agamotto the All-Seeing. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: The Ipod of Agamotto

There is no such thing as the Ipod of Agamotto. The Eye of Agamotto is the enchanted amulet he wears now (since "Strange Tales" #127, December 1964). The Amulet of Agamotto is the original enchanted amulet that Doctor Strange is using during his first story in "Strange Tales" #110, July 1963.

The Orb of Agamotto is the scrying crystal that Doctor Strange uses to perform magical surveillance around the world and into other dimensions. Located in the Chamber of Shadows at Doc's Sanctum Sanctorum, it first appeared in "Strange Tales" #118, March 1964.
9. Conceptual entities are incarnations of basic concepts like Love, Hate, Order or Chaos. Such entities abound in the adventures of Doctor Strange. Which entity rules the Dream Dimension and is a frequent foe of the good Doctor?

Answer: Nightmare

Nightmare is the ruler of the Dimension of Dreams. He is Doctor Strange's oldest foe, his debut story was in "Strange Tales" #110, July 1963. Eternity is an abstract entity who represents the totality of existence. He is first mentioned in "Strange Tales" #134, July 1965 and first appears in "Strange Tales" Vol. I #138, November 1965.

The Living Tribunal is a virtually omnipotent overseer of the different realities that make up the Multiverse. He first appears in "Strange Tales" Vol. I #157, June 1967. Death is the personification of death in Earth's dimension.
10. Doctor Strange has an Asian man-servant/bodyguard at his Sanctum Sanctorum, who also serves as his martial arts master. What is his name?

Answer: Wong

Wong is the faithful man-servant to Doctor Strange. He is mentioned in Strange Tales #110, July 1963, but does not make an appearance until "Strange Tales" #147, August 1966. Hamir, also known as The Hermit was manservant to the Ancient One. He is also Wong's father! The Ancient One is the mentor of Doctor Strange, but that is not his name. Jarvis is the butler for Avengers Mansion and currently Avengers Tower, a superhero group's headquarters.
