Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Scotty joined the five-year mission of the USS Enterprise, he came on as the Chief Engineer at the rank of lieutenant commander. What other role did he fill?

Answer: Second Officer

Lieutenant Commander Scott was the 3rd in the line of command on board the ship, and would take over command whenever both Kirk and Spock were off the ship. Some episodes in which this happened were "A Tase of Armageddon", "Journey to Babel", "Friday's Child", and "A Piece of the Action". In each instance Scotty faced a tricky diplomatic or military situation.

Question by reedy
2. In the original series episode "Trouble With Tribbles", the fight on the space station was started by Scotty.

Answer: True

Scotty was taking shore leave on Deep Space Station K-7 when a Klingon officer starts to taunt them about Kirk. Chekov starts to rise to the bait but Scotty calms him down. However, when the Klingon starts insulting the Enterprise, Scott's mood changes and he eventually hits the Klingon. This starts a brawl between the Starfleet and Klingon officers.

Question by Daddy19
3. In the episode "Wolf in the Fold", Scotty was accused of murder. What was the name of the entity that was actually responsible for the murder?

Answer: Redjac

Redjac was a non-corporeal being that would take over bodies and kill to generate the pain and fear that it fed on. Scotty was accused of killing two women, but was cleared when Redjac was discovered. There were several sets of murders committed by Redjac over the centuries, most notably the Jack the Ripper murders in 19th century London. The entity was eventually beamed into space in a wide dispersal pattern.

Question by BaronTR
4. In what year was Scotty born?

Answer: 2222

Montgomery Scott was born in Scotland, part of Great Britain. He was said to have spent part of his life in Aberdeen. Scotty began his engineering work in 2241. Over 51 years, he work on a total of eleven ships.

Question by tinamomnsox
5. In "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", Scotty assisted the senior crew members of the Enterprise to steal their ship to go to the Genesis planet. He did this by disabling another starship, thus preventing pursuit. What ship did Scotty disable?

Answer: USS Excelsior

After the events of "Star Trek II" and the battle with Khan, the Enterprise limped home at the beginning of the third movie. The Enterprise, with all its damage, was then scheduled to be decommissioned, and the various officers accepted reassignments. Scotty's reassignment was as Chief Engineer of the USS Excelsior. In that role, he was able to sabotage the ship so that it could not follow the Enterprise when Kirk and the other senior staff stole it to return to the Genesis planet.

Question by reedy
6. Complete Scotty's line from "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home". "Damage control's easy - ___, that's hard!"

Answer: Reading Klingon

At the end of "Star Trek III", Kirk and crew fly to Vulcan in the Klingon ship they commandeered at the Genesis planet. In "Star Trek IV", they agree to return to Earth to face the consequences of their actions. Mr Scott needs another day to repair the Klingon Vessel as he is finding it difficult to read the language.

Question by Daddy19
7. Also in "Star Trek IV", Scotty needed to create a whale tank, so he gave Dr. Nicholls of the Plexiglass corp the chemical formula for what?

Answer: Transparent Aluminum

Scotty and McCoy turned up unannounced at Plexiglass looking for material to build their whale tank and played on Scotty's accent to make the staff believed they'd forgotten about the renowned "Professor Scott's" visit.

Dr. Nicholls told Scotty he would need Plexiglass to be six inches thick to cope with the proposed volume of water so Scotty gave him the chemical formula for Transparent Aluminum (after an interesting encounter with a computer!). Transparent Aluminum was able to do the same job but was only 1 inch thick.

Question by Daddy19
8. In the "TNG" episode "Relics", Scotty is unimpressed with the drink he is served by Lt. Commander Data in Ten-Forward. What colour is the drink Data gives him instead?

Answer: Green

Scotty had been trapped in the transporter buffer of USS Jenolan since it crashed in a Dyson Sphere. Rescued by the Enterprise-D crew, Scotty initially asks Data for a Scotch Whiskey and is disappointed when the drink he receives is synthehol and not real.

Data's description of Guinan's Aldebaran Whisky as being green is a reference back to the original series episode "By Any Other Name", in which Scotty is involved in a drinking competition. Tomar asks Scotty what the drink was, to which Scotty replies "It is green".

Question by Daddy19
9. In "Relics", who helped Scotty rescue the Enterprise-D from the Dyson's sphere?

Answer: La Forge

Scotty went back to the Genolan to access its computer files, and Geordi went along at Captain Picard's request to help. While they were working on the ship, the Enterprise accidentally got pulled into the Dyson's sphere, and was not only unable to get out, but was at risk from a fluctuating star. Scotty and Geordi managed to get the Genolan's engines working and fly to where the Enterprise went into the sphere, then figure out how to open the hatch into the sphere, and use the ship shields to keep the door open until the Enterprise could escape.

Question by BaronTR
10. In "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", Colonel West (disguised as a Klingon) was attempting to kill the Federation President. Did Scotty stop him from succeeding by shooting him with a phaser?

Answer: Yes

When the senior staff beamed down to Camp Khitomer, Kirk sent Scotty to locate the would-be assassin and threw himself at the President to protect him.

Scotty located a 'Klingon' holding a disruptor in a room overlooking the auditorium and shot him. The 'Klingon' fell through into the room below where it was revealed to be Colonel West disguised as a Klingon. Colonel West was played by Rene Auberjonois, who went on to play Odo in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".

Question by Daddy19
11. Scotty discovered the formula for the development of transwarp beaming.

Answer: True

In the 2009 reboot film "Star Trek", Ambassador Spock (from the original timeline unaltered by Nero) told the young Lieutenant Scott that he had developed the theory behind transwarp technology, and made it work. Scotty responded with saying that he had bandied the idea about, and believed that it could be done, but that it hadn't worked yet. Spock proceeded to provide him with the completed formula, obviously learned from the Scotty from his own timeline.

Question by reedy
12. Scotty did not have a family of his own, but he did have a nephew, Peter Preston, who also served aboard the Enterprise. He was killed in one of the films. Which one?

Answer: "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"

Preston was among the training crew that was aboard the Enterprise at the beginning of "The Wrath of Khan", under the command of Spock. Preston was killed during the attack by Khan in the USS Reliant. Scotty, despite not having the closest relationship with Preston, was nevertheless grief-stricken.

Question by reedy
13. In "Star Trek Generations", the movie that transitioned from the original crew to the next generation, Captain Kirk, Commander Chekov, and Captain Scott attend the launch of the USS Enterprise-D under the command of Captain Picard.

Answer: False

Kirk, Chekov and Scotty *were* the three officers that attended the launch, but it was not the Enterprise-D that they visited. Rather, it was the Enterprise-B under the command of Captain John Harriman (portrayed by Alan Ruck). It was during this event that Captain Kirk was originally believed to have been killed when the energy ribbon (that gave access to the Nexus) struck the Enterprise-B. Rather than die, Kirk was pulled into the Nexus, where one's existence is whatever ideal one wishes it to be.

Question by reedy
14. In the 2009 movie "Star Trek", on which planet was Scotty when he was found by Kirk?

Answer: Delta Vega

Chronologically at this point in the "Star Trek" Universe, the perceived maximum range of the transporter was still limited. Scotty, however, believed differently and performed an experiment on Admiral Archer's dog. Unfortunately, what happened to the beagle is unknown both to us and to Scotty. This resulted in his assignment to the ice planet Delta Vega.

Question by Daddy19
15. Not considering the alternate timeline Scotty from the 2009 "Star Trek" movie, what was the final fate of Scotty, as seen in the "TNG" episode "Relics"?

Answer: He was given a shuttle and left for places unknown

After retiring from Starfleet in 2294, Scotty headed for the Norpin Colony aboard the USS Jenolan. Unfortunately, they crashed onto the Dyson sphere that they discovered en route. That was where the ship was discovered by the Enterprise-D in the year 2369, with Scotty preserved within the transporter pattern holder.

As a reward for helping to save the Enterprise-D from being trapped within the sphere, Capt. Picard gave Scotty the shuttle Goddard. Scotty, originally headed for the Norpin Colony, didn't say where he would go, only that he would not be going to Norpin.
