Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My "Amateur Hour Radio Show"

Answer: Major Bowes

"Major Bowes Amateur Hour" was popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Frank Sinatra got an early start here.
2. "Our Boarding House" - the big windbag

Answer: Major Hoople

Major Hoople and his wife ran a boarding house. Most of the humor played off the Major, a pompous, stuffed shirt windbag.
3. Ward Bond - Wagonmaster - "Wagons HO!"

Answer: Major Seth Adams

"Wagon Train" was one of the best westerns ever, as the Major and ever changing cast of players took forever to cross the country.
4. "M*A*S*H" - Ferret Face

Answer: Major Frank Burns

Larry Linville was tired of being typecast as an inept bungler. To write him out of the show, he was promoted and sent stateside, a slap in the face to the more deserving.
5. "M*A*S*H" - Hot Lips

Answer: Major Margaret Houlihan

What did Margaret ever see in Frank? She was everything he wasn't: efficient and competent. Loretta Swit was one of only four cast members to play in all eleven seasons along with Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, and William Christopher.
6. Played by Charlton Heston in a Sam Peckinpah film

Answer: Major Dundee

A good but not great film, despite a cast with major (no pun intended) stars and director. It was better when they went back forty years later and cleaned it up.
7. Damon Wayans as a military school loose cannon

Answer: Major Payne

A funny film, coincidently based on another movie which could have been used in this quiz, "The Private War of Major Benson", also starring Charlton Heston.
8. David Bowie - "Space Oddity"

Answer: Major Tom

Is Major Tom Elton John's "Rocket Man"? There seems to be a connection. Peter Schilling issued a sequel in 1983, "Major Tom (Coming Home)".
9. "Dr. Strangelove" - Slim Pickens

Answer: Major Kong

Who doesn't love the scene of Major Kong riding the bomb? Great movie. This was the first movie role for the legendary James Earl Jones, playing the bombardier in Major T. J. "King" Kong's B-52, Lieutenant Lothar Zogg.
10. "I Dream of Jeannie" - Master

Answer: Major Nelson

Larry Hagman was only a Captain when the show started but he did get promoted.
