Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these songs is not by Bob Dylan?

Answer: Yer Blues

"Yer Blues" is a song by The Beatles on their self titled album (aka "The White Album").

"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is on the album "Bringing It All Back Home" while "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" is on "Blonde on Blonde", and "Tangled Up in Blue" is on "Blood on the Tracks".

In addition the these three songs, Dylan had several other "blue" songs including "Subterranean Homesick Blues", "Talkin' World War III Blues" . "North Country Blues", and "Black Crow Blues".
2. In which league did a 1967 expansion team go by the name of the Blues?

Answer: National Hockey League

The St. Louis Blues were part of the NHL's expansion from six to twelve teams for the 1967-68 season. They reached the Stanley Cup finals in each of their first three seasons, in part because the playoff format was setup so that the finals would see an original six team take on an expansion team. The last of those saw them become victims to Bobby Orr's famous overtime series winning goal where Orr was shown "flying" parallel to the ice.

From 1980 to 2004 they made the playoffs in twenty-five consecutive years although they did not make the finals anytime during that streak.
3. In the movie "Yellow Submarine" what were the antagonists called?

Answer: Blue Meanies

Yellow Submarine was a 1968 film based on the song of the same name by The Beatles. The Beatles sang several songs which were used in the movie. Unlike previous Beatles movies such as "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!", "Yellow Submarine" was an animated film. In addition to their voices, animated caricatures of the band members were used.

The blue meanies attempt to destroy music and are opposed by The Beatles in the guise of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
4. Which detective is featured in the story "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle"?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

"The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" appeared in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". The Blue Carbuncle is a jewel that has been stolen and hidden in the inside of a goose. This happened just before Christmas and the goose ends up being sold for someone's Christmas dinner before the thief can recover it. To make matters worse, through a strange set of circumstances, the goose ends up on the dinner table of a policeman who discovers the jewel and brings it to Holmes.
5. Which of the stars of the police drama "Blue Bloods" previously starred as the lead character in "Magnum, P.I."?

Answer: Tom Selleck

"Blue Bloods" takes place in New York City and focuses on the Reagan family, a police and law enforcement dynasty. Tom Selleck is police commissioner, Frank Reagan, while Donnie Wahlberg and Will Estes play his sons her are both on the police force. A third son of Frank's is often mentioned as a deceased cop who died before the series started.

Len Cariou plays Frank's father who is a retired commissioner. Frank also has a daughter played by Bridget Moynahan who is a prosecutor for the district attorney's office.

One characteristic that differentiates "Blue Bloods" from similar police shows is that each episode features a scene where the entire family, spanning four generations, sits down to Sunday dinner together. Depending on the plot for the episode, this dinner can vary widely in the level of harmony and acrimony among the family members.
6. What was the seasonal song that Eddie Cochran thought there was no cure for?

Answer: Summertime Blues

"Summertime Blues" is a song about a young man having to work during the summer rather than getting to spend the time relaxing. Each verse ends "But there ain't no cure for the summertime blues." In the last verse he even complains about his situation to his congressman whose response is, "I'd like to help you son but you're too young to vote." reminding us of where our elected official's priorities often lie.

In addition to Eddie Cochran's version which was released less than two years before his death in a car accident, the song was performed by several other groups, most notably by The Who, who released a version on their album "Live at Leeeds".
7. Which of these sports teams does not have the color blue in their name?

Answer: Cincinnati Major League Baseball team

The Cincinnati baseball team is the Reds and is one of the oldest professional sports teams in existence having been around since 1882. The team that is considered the first all professional baseball team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

The Toronto American League Baseball team is the Blue Jays. The Columbus National Hockey League team is the Blue Jackets. The Winnipeg Canadian Football League team is the Blue Bombers.
8. Which of the following movies starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd?

Answer: The Blues Brothers

"The Blues Brothers" was a movie about Belushi and Aykroyd's attempt to save an orphanage from being foreclosed on. In addition to having a soundtrack with some classic rock songs, the movie also contained the well known quote "We are on a mission from God" since the orphanage was run by a nun. Dan Aykroyd's character, Elwood Blues, manages to have a fake address on his driver's license which he lists as the address where Wrigley Field is located.

In 1998, a sequel, "Blues Brothers 2000", was released.
9. Which science fiction writer, most known for his "Xanth" series, published a book called "Blue Adept" in 1981?

Answer: Piers Anthony

"Blue Adept" is the second of seven books in Piers Anthony's "Apprentice Adept" series. This series features two parallel worlds, Proton and Phaze. Proton is a world of science while Phaze is a world of magic. Most people have alter egos on both worlds but Stile, the main character in the first three books in the series, has an alter ego on Phaze that has been killed. So he is able to go back and forth between the two worlds.

One of my favorite features in this series is The Game played between two people where each player starts with a set of four choices for the type of contest which will be held. Each selects without knowing what the other has chosen with the two choices leading to a spot on a grid which then allows for further choices between the two players until a specific game is chosen.
10. This quiz would not be complete without a question on America's favorite blue haired family. Which of these is not the name of a "Simpsons" episode?

Answer: The Moon is Not Blue

"The Moon is Not Blue" is an episode from the final season of M*A*S*H where the 4077th is attempting to obtain a copy of the movie "The Moon is Blue" but ends up with "State Fair".

"One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" was a season 2 episode where the Simpsons decided to try something new for dinner, sushi. In season 14's "Moe Baby Blues", Moe becomes Maggie's babysitter. "White Christmas Blues" was the Christmas episode for season 25.
