Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the occupation of Chicago's own Al Bundy from the sitcom "Married...with Children"?

Answer: Shoe salesman

"Married...with Children" was a sitcom that parodied the traditional perfect television family. Ed O'Neil played Al Bundy, an unsuccessful shoe salesman who is still obsessed with his high school football days. His lazy wife was Peggy played by Katey Segal. Al and Peggy frequently insulted each other and argued but loved each other despite that.

Their children were the sex-crazed, ditzy Kelly (Christina Applegate) and loser Bud (David Faustino). Al frequently mentioned scoring four touchdowns in a single game while in high school.

Other running jokes were the lack of a sex life between Al and Peggy, Bud being unable to get a date and Kelly's stupidity.
2. Haddonfield, Illinois is the hometown of which movie slasher who killed his sister Judith in the first "Halloween" film?

Answer: Michael Myers

Michael Myers is the killer in most films of the "Halloween" horror film franchise. At the beginning of the 1978 film, Michael murders his sister Judith. Because he is so young, Michael is committed to an asylum rather than imprisoned. Over the course of many years, Michael becomes more deranged and violent.

He escapes his asylum to hunt down his little sister Laurie Strobe (Jamie Lee Curtis). Laurie is now a teenager and Michael begins stalking her and killing on his way.
3. Which Marvel supervillainess was born Tanya Sealy and once worked as an escort in Chicago?

Answer: Black Mamba

Black Mamba was originally Tanya Sealy before she was recruited by Roxxon Oil. Black Mamba was embedded with a device that gave her superpowers. She was part of a team of villains whose goal was to steal the Serpent Crown, which was said to give its wearer superhuman abilities. She later joined the villain organizations called Serpent Society and BAD Girls Inc.
4. Which of the following was NOT a character portrayed by Jaleel White on the Chicago-based sitcom "Family Matters"?

Answer: Aunt Oona

"Family Matters" was a sitcom that debuted in 1989 and featured the Winslow Family. Carl Winslow (Reginald Vel Johnson) was a police officer and his wife Harriet (Jo Marie Payton) was initially elevator operator. They had three kids: Eddie (Darius McCrary), Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams) and Judy (Jamiee Foxworth). Judy disappeared without explanation midway through the series run.

Initially the show got off to a poor start and was near cancelation until Steve Urkel was introduced. Urkel was played by Jaleel White and was the geeky, clumsy next door neighbor. His catchphrase was "Did I do that?" and he was in love with Laura who did not feel the same way about him. Gradually, the show focus more on Urkel than the Winslows.

Urkel was so popular that White's role was expanded to include other characters. One of these characters was Stefan Urquelle, who was cool and suave teenager and was Steve's alter ego. Another was Steve's cousin Myrtle. Myrtle was obsessed with Eddie the same way Steve was obsessed with Laura.
5. In the Andrews Sisters' song "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy is from Illinois.

Answer: True

The first line of the song says "he came from out Chicago Way". "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was a 1941 hit song for the Andrew Sisters. It became an iconic patriotic song during World War II, even though the U.S. had not entered the war when the song debuted. The basic plot of the song involves a trumpeter who is drafted into the Army and blows the wake up bugle call known as reveille.
6. John Bender, Claire Standish, Brian Johnson, Andrew Clark and Allison Reynolds are the titular group of which teenage characters?

Answer: The Breakfast Club

Like many John Hughes film, "The Breakfast Club" was both filmed and set in Illinois, although a specific town is not mentioned. In the film, five teenagers are spending their Saturday in detention at their school's library. Each of the five have a totally different personality but they begin to bond as their day slowly passes.

Judd Nelson played John Bender, a constant troublemaker. Claire Standish was played by Molly Ringwald and was the school's popular, rich girl. Anthony Michael Hall portrayed Brian Johnson, a nerd. Emilio Estevez was Andrew Clark, a jock under constant pressure to succeed. Ally Sheedy was Allison Reynolds, a loner who is labeled weird by her fellow students.
7. Lanford is the fictional Illinois town that is home to which sitcom family whose show was revived in 2018?

Answer: The Connor Family from "Roseanne"

"Roseanne" starred Roseanne Barr as Roseanne Connor, a blue collar housewife. John Goodman played her husband Dan and Laurie Metcalfe played her sister Jackie. The Connors had three children: Becky, Darlene and DJ (played by Lecy Goranson, Sara Gilbert and Michael Fishman).

The Connors frequently had money troubles that plagued many Midwestern industrial towns in the 1990s. Much of the series focused on their everyday struggles. The series ended in 1997 but was revived in 2018. The show was canceled later that year after Roseanne made, what were considered, racist tweets.

The show was renamed "The Connor Family" in the Fall of 2018 and debuted with the original cast except for Roseanne. Her absence was explained by her character dying from an overdose of painkillers.
8. Jurgis Rudkin is a Lithuanian immigrant who works in which place in "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair?

Answer: Slaughterhouse

"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair is a classic novel that is critical of the meatpacking industry in Chicago in the early twentieth century. The novel features Jurgis Rudkin, an immigrant from Lithuania who gets a job in the local slaughterhouse. Rudkin is barely able to scrape by a meager living despite his long hours working in the slaughterhouse's poor and dangerous conditions.

Upton Sinclair was primarily a muckraker, a journalist who often worked to expose a problem with society. In order to prepare for the novel, Sinclair secretly worked in a slaughterhouse packing meat for two months. It was there he learned about the plight of the working class and the unsanitary conditions.
9. Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly are two murderesses who gain fame in which play?

Answer: Chicago

"Chicago" is a musical that originated as a stage play on Broadway in 1975. The plays centers around Roxie Hart who killed her lover and Velma Kelly who killed her husband and her sister who were having an affair. Their trials are media gold and no one can get enough of the women and the other murderesses in jail with them. Velma Kelly was a famous stage performer and Roxie aspires to be one. Both women more or less admit to the murders but deny it in court. Their lawyer is Billy Flynn who manages to free both women who then go on to fame and stardom.

In the original Broadway play, Roxie was played by Gwen Verdon. Velma was played by Chita Rivera. Billy Flynn was played by Jerry Orbach. In the Best Picture winning 2002 film, they were played by Renee Zellwegger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, respectively.
10. Will Smith plays Del Spooner, a Chicago police officer, in which futuristic film?

Answer: I, Robot

Del Spooner is a Chicago police officer who has several robotic body parts because of an accident he was in. Much of the world, in the film, uses robots for basic tasks and robots are everywhere. Spooner hates robots because they are cold, calculating and have no emotion.

The main plot of the film involves the murder of a man. Spooner believes only a robot could have killed him. However, others disagree as robots will not harm humans.
