Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brick, lumber, wool, grain, and ore: these are the resources needed to build your way to settlements and success in a board game created by a German company in 1995. What is the name of this game?

Answer: Settlers of Catan

Settlers of Catan was designed by Klaus Teuber, a German dental technician who found a second career as a board game designer. In the game, players receive resources that they use to build settlements and earn victory points. The first person to earn ten victory points win.

This image is of the hexagonal game board used in Catan and of the robber, a dreaded villain in the game that blocks resources for the player who draws him.
2. What movie, starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as two friends on a road trip, came out in 1991 and earned six Academy Award nominations?

Answer: Thelma and Louise

Ridley Scott directed "Thelma and Louise," which was a commercial and critical success and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Sarandon was already an established actor when this movie was released, whereas Davis had been more of a supporting player. Both went on to greater success after "Thelma and Louise."

This image is of a blue convertible, which is the kind of car the two characters take on their adventurous road trip.
3. In the mid-1990s, a strange thing happened in the world of professional sports. A highly accomplished NBA player decided to try his hand at a completely different sport. What sport did Michael Jordan play with a Chicago team?

Answer: Baseball

It's rare that a professional athlete in one field moves to another, but that's exactly what Michael Jordan did when he traded in his Air Jordans for a pair of baseball cleats and started playing baseball with the Chicago White Sox minor league team. In 1994, Jordan played for the Double-A minor league team the Birmingham Barons. He performed decently, stealing 30 bases and hitting three home runs. A year later, he returned to professional basketball.

This image is supposed to be the stitching one might find on a baseball.
4. In 1992, the Disney company launched EuroDisney near what European city?

Answer: Paris

Euro Disney Resort opened in Marne-la-Vallée, a town just outside Paris, in 1992. After a mediocre beginning, by 1995 the resort, later renamed Disneyland Paris, began reporting regular profits. The park added Golf Disneyland, which features 9-hole and 18-hole courses.

This image is a rough sketch of the Arc de Triomphe, a monument that has been standing in western Paris since the early 1800s.
5. In June of 1992, American television viewers could see something unusual: a major political candidate on TV, not on a news or political debate show, but on a pop culture hit. What musical instrument did Bill Clinton play on the Arsenio Hall show?

Answer: Tenor saxophone

It was somewhat fitting when then-Presidential candidate Clinton appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show; he was the upstart candidate and Arsenio was the upstart talk show host. Clinton, who had played tenor saxophone in school, played ""Heartbreak Hotel" and made political history.

The moment has been cited as won that was the beginning of a series of wins for the young man from Hot Springs, Arkansas.
6. In 1997, professional golfer Tiger Woods won a major championship for the first time, beating the runner-up Tom Kite by twelve strokes. What was the name of this championship and where was it held?

Answer: Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia

Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters Tournament, which was held April 10-13 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. After a rocky start, Tiger pulled ahead in the second and third rounds and went on to win handily. At 21, Tiger was the youngest person to win the Masters.

This image is of a green jacket. A special green jacket is given only to members of the Augusta National Golf Club or Masters champions.
7. In 1996, the world of music lost a compelling new voice when a rapper/actor died in Las Vegas. Who was this star, whose popular fourth studio album was called "All Eyez on Me"?

Answer: Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur was born in East Harlem in 1971; both of his parents were active members of the Black Panther organization. After his family moved to Baltimore, Tupac attended an arts school there and studied poetry, jazz, ballet, and Shakespeare, and went on to become an accomplished rapper. He released his debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, in 1991 and went on to greater success in music as well as acting. He was 25 years old when he was shot in a drive-by incident in Las Vegas in 1996.

This image is supposed to be of a red bandana, which Tupac often wore tied around his shaved head.
8. First launched in 1990 in Japan and Korea, a 16-bit home video game console hit the market and was part of a console war. What was the name of this system, which was released in the U.S. in 1991 and Europe and Australia in 1992?

Answer: Super Nintendo Entertainment System

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System console was released during the console wars of the 1980s and 1990s. The main competitor was Sega. Technically, the Super Nintendo stood out with simulated 3D effects and upgraded chips in its cartridges, putting it ahead of the Genesis, at least for a while.

This image is a rough idea of what the controller looks like for a SNES console.
9. In 1991, Seattle-based band Nirvana released an album which became a cornerstone of a new type of music, alternative rock. The album was "Nevermind". What was the opening track and lead single from this album, Nirvana's second?

Answer: Smells Like Teen Spirit

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's biggest hit. It topped many charts, was in heavy rotation on the radio and on MTV, and, according to Time magazine (1992), was an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X. The lyrics were difficult to decipher, and critics have said the song explores confusion and anger of the band's lead singer, Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide at age 27, three years after the album's release.

This image is supposed to be of a stick of deodorant. Teen Spirit is a deodorant, originally created by Mennen, targeted to appeal to teenage girls.
10. NBC was the home of "Must See TV" in the 1990s. Which of the following did NOT occur during this decade?

Answer: Sitcom "Friends" ended

"Friends" debuted in 1994 and ran its last episode in 2004. The show was instantly popular and in the second season, two of the stars were given bigger salary raises than the other four. For the third season, the cast negotiated as a unit, a rare move, but one that resulted in equal pay for each of the stars in the ensemble show. The solidarity remained throughout the rest of the series, with each actor earning $1M per episode by season ten. The show and its cast earned over 100 nominations and awards.

This image is of a sofa, which is where much of the plot took place on "Friends," as they sat in their local coffee shop, Central Perk.
