Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year were the parks opened?

Answer: 1976

The parks opened during the bicentennial celebration of America and featured Americana themes which made them instant successes.
2. The Turn of the Century roller coaster was pretty groundbreaking with its two corkscrews, but in 1980 it took on a wicked new personality with two added loops and a new theme. What was it renamed as?

Answer: The Demon

The new Demon theme included a rock cave in the shape of a skull that the coaster travels through exiting past a blood red waterfall!
3. My favorite ride was a unique ferris wheel with bucket cars and three arms. The California version was renamed to the boring but appropriate Triple Wheel, but the original name was which of these?

Both Great America parks have expanded their thrills and chills by adding water parks in the form of Hurricane Harbor and Boomerang Bay.
6. Another great ride that was featured at both parks always had me try the elusive floating penny trick (shh! don't tell anyone). What was is called?

Answer: The Edge

The Edge was an Intamin free-fall thrill ride. It was a fun ride that ended with you looking skyward. Alas most of these rides have been removed in favor of the taller higher-capacity drop towers. Both parks now have drop towers and the Edge is just a memory!
7. The ownership of both parks was once shared by the same company. Interestingly enough it was a hotel chain, but what chain was it?

Answer: Marriott

Great America Gurnee was purchased by Six Flags in 1984 and has remained a flagship park for them since. Great America Santa Clara has had numerous owners including the City of Santa Clara, Paramount, Cedar Fair and JMA ventures.
8. What two cities are the parks located in?

Answer: Santa Clara and Gurnee

A third park was planned to be built in Howard County, Maryland but failed to be constructed due to local opposition. Boo!
9. Returning to the memories. I seem to recall a coaster that launched you through a loop. If you followed the safety sign you should have your head back as you launch. What was it called?

Answer: Tidal Wave

The Tidal Wave coaster was produced by Anton Schwartzkopf and can still be found at a number of parks most notably as Montezooma's Revenge in Knott's Berry Farm. Both Great America rides relied on a weight drop system to launch the coaster where as the Knott's Berry Farm ride uses a fly wheel system.
10. Both parks have sky towers that allow guests for a 360 degree panoramic aerial view of their surroundings. The Gurnee park's tower is taller by how many feet?

Answer: 100

The sky tower in Santa Clara was limited to 200 feet due to the proximity to the San Jose Airport, while the Gurnee park's tower is 300 feet tall.
