Abin Sur was a Green Lantern whose spaceship crashed on Earth. Realizing he was mortally injured, Abin Sur instructed the ring to find the most deserving person on Earth to become a Green Lantern. The power of the ring brought test pilot Hal Jordan in a flight simulator to the site of Abin Sur's crash where he gave Hal the ring.
