Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the opening date for the Walt Disney World Haunted Mansion?

Answer: October 1, 1971

Haunted Mansion was ready on opening day. The original opened in Disneyland in 1969.
2. How many ghosts are currently residing in the Haunted Mansion?

Answer: 999

This one was too easy but remember, there is always room for one more.
3. What style of architecture was used?

Answer: English Tudor

Each Haunted Mansion is done differently. Walt didn't want the mansion to look run down. He felt that wouldn't fit into his parks.
4. What is the ride time (in minutes)?

Answer: 7.5

I wish it were even longer. Compared to ride times for the new attractions, it is an eternity.
5. What type of ride system is the Doom buggy?

Answer: Omnimover

The Omnimover gave the Imagineers 360 degree motion control. Through the use of turning and the shape of the Omnimover, the Imagineers could explicitly direct your attention. It was first used in Disneyland's Adventures Through Inner Space.
6. How long in feet is the track?

Answer: 960

That's 295 meters for the metric inclined. Check out some of the Haunted Mansion websites to see the actual ride diagram. It's amazing how much Disney can pack into a fairly tight space.
7. Which one of these names is NOT found on the crypt at the Haunted Mansion exit?

Answer: Walt Disney

There are many more great names like: Manny Festation, Metta Fisiks, Pearl E. Gates, Rusty Gates, C. U. Later, Hal Lucinashun, Rustin Peese, I.M. Ready, Emma Spook, ...
8. Where is Haunted Mansion found in the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World?

Answer: Liberty Square

This is the only attraction that is in each park and each in a different land.
9. Where is Haunted Mansion found in Disneyland?

Answer: New Orleans Square

Disneyland does not have a Liberty Square.
10. Where is Haunted Mansion found in Tokyo Disneyland?

Answer: Fantasyland

It's about 7.5 minutes in length in Tokyo. The same as Walt Disney World.
11. Where is Haunted Mansion found in Disneyland Paris?

Answer: Frontierland

The Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris is based upon a western theme.
12. What is the name of the song sung throughout the attraction?

Answer: Grim Grinning Ghosts

The music throughout the attraction is a variation of the tune and words. Listen to the music slow down or speed up depending upon the scene. At times it's hard to hear but it is there. The only other music is the wedding march played briefly in the attic.
13. Who sings the Haunted Mansion theme song from the last question?

Answer: Mello Men

The imagineers used this talent throughout the parks and in films. The members are Bill Lee, Max Smith, Bob Stevens and Thurl Ravenscroft. Thurl is the soloist and is one of the faces on the singing busts along with many other appearances.
14. There are two 'officially acknowledged' Hidden Mickeys, where are they?

Answer: Ballroom - graveyard

Cast members may place other Hidden Mickeys but these two are listed by Disney. In the ballroom the effect is created by the formation of three plates. In the graveyard it is formed by the Grim Reaper's fingers.
15. What is the name of the lady at the end of the attraction that encourages you to 'make final arrangements' to stay in the Haunted Mansion?

Answer: Little Leota

The body and voice belong to Leota Thomas. Mrs. Thomas is also the face in the crystal ball. Mrs. Thomas' maiden name was Toombs.
16. What is the name of the woman in the crystal ball?

Answer: Madame Leota

It's very interesting to learn how they did this effect. Most of us probably thought it was a hologram but holograms were not available back then. It is a neutral face being projected upon.
17. What is the purpose of the stretching room in the Haunted Mansion in Walt Disney World?

Answer: nice effect

In Disneyland the elevator gets guests from the facade, below the railroad, and then on to the ride portion. They liked the effect so much they kept it in even though it was not needed.
18. True or false - Walt Disney's face is on one of the singing busts?

Answer: False

The furthest bust may resemble Walt, but it is actually Thurl Ravenscroft. Thurl was also the voice of 'Tony the Tiger'.
19. How many 'Hitchhiking ghosts' are there?

Answer: 3

They rotate with each omnimover. They are: Gus, Ezra, and Phineas.
20. The illusion of ghosts in the ballroom is created by what technique?

Answer: Pepper's Ghost

I won't ruin the effect for you here but there are several HM websites that have great info on this illusion and many more. The illusion involves mirrors and animatronics. Also, due to the reverse effect caused by the mirrors, the women are all leading the men in dancing.
