The metabolic disorder (reported from the A/P) is unconfirmed, and probably a euphamism for his kidney failure. The few years proceeding his death, he had operations to remove a tumor that was pressing on his pituatary gland, causing it to secrete growth hormones.

This condition, called acromegaly, caused him to grow two inches and two ring sizes during the last few years of his life. He also experienced excrutiating pain. His pain management regimen (with Vicodin and other drugs) soon turned into an unmanaged addiction, and contributed to his kidney failure.
