Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'The Golden Girls', Rose Nylund was a widow whose late husband, Charlie, had died of a heart attack in which of the following unfortunate circumstances?

Answer: While they were in bed together

Rose Nylund was one of the four older women who lived together in Miami in the US sitcom 'The Golden Girls'. She and her husband had five children together (most of whom were never seen on screen during the series), before his untimely death led her to move to Miami and her eventual meeting with the other girls - Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia. Rose provided much of the comic relief on the show as she had a tendency to tell bizarre stories about her upbringing in the (apparently peculiar) town of St. Olaf, Minnesota and ask silly questions that generally annoyed the rest of her housemates. During the show's seven season run between 1985 and 1992, Rose's new romantic interests included a widower named Arnie Peterson, a professor called Miles Webber and a mobster known as "The Cheese Man".

Rose was portrayed by Betty White - an actress also known for playing Sue-Ann Nivens on 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show', for her guest roles on some of the most popular shows on US television such as 'Ally McBeal' and 'Ugly Betty', and for her numerous appearances on various game shows.
2. Rosie Cotton was one of the lesser known hobbits to feature in J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Ring's' trilogy and its film adaptations. Which member of the Fellowship did she marry?

Answer: Sam Gamgee

Rosie Cotton was the childhood sweetheart of Samwise "Sam" Gamgee, who remained at home in The Shire while he followed his friend and employer, Frodo Baggins, on the quest to return the One Ring to the heart of Mount Doom. After his triumphant return to his homeland, Sam and Rosie were married and went on to have a family of 13 children. Rosie appeared briefly in two of Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' film adaptations - 'The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'The Return of the King'. She was portrayed by Sarah McLeod, who despite her extremely limited time on screen was one of the more high-profile actresses from New Zealand to have a role in the New Zealand-filmed series.

Frodo never married before he sailed into the West with Gandalf, Bilbo and the elves. Peregrin "Pippin" Took became Thain of the Shire and married a hobbit named Diamond while Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck inherited the title of Master of Buckland and married Estella Bolger.
3. The sitcom 'Keeping Up Appearances' featured a character named Rose who was known for her numerous "gentleman friends" and her regular attempts to seduce which of these married men?

Answer: The vicar

British TV sitcom 'Keeping Up Appearances' featured four flowery-named sisters with vastly different personalities. It followed the (often outlandish) schemes of the snobbish Hyacinth Bucket to promote her social standing and the trials she faced in her attempts to cover up her relationship with the slobbish Daisy and the man-hunting Rose. However, she was quite happy to regularly mention her rich sister, Violet, who she usually referred to as "the one with a Mercedes, swimming pool, sauna and room for a pony".

A regular running joke on the series was Hyacinth's attempts to ingratiate herself with various members of society, including the vicar and his wife. Unfortunately for Hyacinth her efforts were often ruined by Rose, who called him "that dishy vicar" and had a tendency to chase him around regardless of the presence of his wife. Rose's interactions with the vicar generally occurred when she was 'heartbroken' over the loss of one of her "gentleman friends" or numerous short-lived engagements.

Richard Bucket and Onslow were two of Rose's brothers-in-law - the husbands of Hyacinth and Daisy respectively. Major Wilton-Smythe was a minor character who had a unrequited and somewhat peculiar crush on Hyacinth.
4. The chirpy and fiercely competitive Amy Rose, otherwise known as Rosy the Rascal, was in love with which famous Sega video game character?

Answer: Sonic the Hedgehog

Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog often seen wearing a red and white dress and boots, first appeared in 1993 in the video game 'Sonic the Hedgehog CD' for the Sega CD platform. The aim of the game was for players to guide Sonic's rescue of Amy Rose after her kidnap by the evil Robo-Sonic. Once successful, Amy Rose bestowed a kiss on Sonic and the two characters left the screen together.

However, Sega did not write a "happy ever after ending" for the love-stricken hedgehog as Sonic refused her proposal of marriage in 'Sonic Adventure 2' and in later games it is clear that the two are not a couple despite Amy Rose's attempts to flirt with him.
5. The love story of Rose DeWitt Bukater and Jack Dawson was a key storyline of the 1997 film 'Titanic', but which of these men was the rich fiancé with whom she had boarded the ill-fated ship?

Answer: Cal Hockley

Rose DeWitt Bukater (played by Kate Winslet) was an upper-class teenager who had been forced to become engaged to a rich older man named Cal Hockley to secure her and her mother's place in society after the family had lost almost all their fortune following the death of her father. Deeply unhappy, Rose attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the Titanic's deck while it steamed across the Atlantic en route to its fateful meeting with a stray iceberg. She was talked down by third-class passenger Jack Dawson (Leonardo di Caprio) and the unlikely couple quickly fell in love. Unfortunately they also incited Cal's jealousy when he discovered their relationship, which led to Rose having to rescue an imprisoned Jack from the sinking ship after Cal had framed him for the theft of a valuable diamond necklace known as the "Heart of the Ocean".

Brock Lovett was the leader of the modern-day expedition to locate the "Heart of the Ocean", Thomas Ryan was an Irish third-class passenger and Spicer Lovejoy was Cal's valet.
6. In sci-fi TV show 'Doctor Who', the Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, regenerated after kissing his companion Rose Tyler. Where did this gallant act take place?

Answer: Orbiting the Earth on a satellite called the Gamestation

In the final episode of the 2005 series of 'Doctor Who', The Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack Harkness were battling a Dalek invasion of Earth in the year 200,100 from a satellite known as the Gamestation. The Doctor and Rose had previously visited it 100 years earlier when it was known as Satellite Five. In order to save Rose's life, the Doctor used his TARDIS to return her to her own time. However, Rose wasn't that keen on being sent away for her own good and managed to break into the console, absorb the time vortex and return herself to the Gamestation where she saved the day by using the power of the vortex to turn the Daleks to dust. The kiss between the Doctor and Rose was his method of transferring the vortex so it just killed his ninth body rather than his beloved companion.

The Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack visited Cardiff in the episode 'Boom Town' and the Doctor and Rose hung out on the roof of a block of flats during 'Aliens of London'. The field of apple grass didn't make an appearance until the episode 'New Earth', which featured David Tennant as the regenerated Tenth Doctor.
7. Rose Nadler and her husband Bernard were separated when their plane crashed onto a mysterious island at the start of the hit TV show 'LOST'. Why had they been on the doomed flight in the first place?

Answer: They were returning from their honeymoon

Rose and Bernard Nadler were returning to the USA following their honeymoon in Australia. The couple had married knowing that Rose had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just a year to live. Shortly before the crash, Bernard had left his seat to visit the bathroom at the rear of the plane. This meant that when the plane broke up and the tail section landed on a different part of the island to the main fuselage, Rose and Bernard were left unaware of the other's survival. The couple were eventually reunited in the season two episode 'Collision' and Rose was able to inform Bernard that her stay on the mysterious island appeared to have cured her cancer.

Rose was played by L. Scott Caldwell while Bernard was portrayed by Sam Anderson.
8. The 1939 musical film 'Rose of Washington Square' told the story of the eponymous Rose's relationship with a man named Barton DeWitt Clinton. How did he hold back her career as a singer?

Answer: He was a criminal who skipped town

In 'Rose of Washington Square', the title character Rose Sargent (Alice Faye) was a singer with the Ziegfeld Follies - a popular Broadway revue show of the early 20th century. Needless to say, her public image took a bit of a battering when her lover (Tyrone Power) was arrested and she was then left heartbroken when he abandoned her in order to skip bail.

The film was a poorly disguised rehash of the life of the singer and actress Fanny Brice, who also starred in the Ziegfeld Follies and was married to a convicted fraudster. In the end, Brice (whose story was also retold in the 1964 musical 'Funny Girl') sued 20th Century Fox, the film's production company, for breach of privacy and won an undisclosed out of court settlement from them.
9. Rose Canton is a DC Comics character with a villainous alter ego named Thorn. What is the name of her unsuspecting husband?

Answer: Alan Scott

Rose Canton, a.k.a. Thorn, was an enemy of the DC Comics superhero, The Flash. Rose was a botanist who had been infected by a rare plant. This infection led to her developing a split personality - the 'good' Rose who fell in love with and married Alan Scott and the 'evil' Thorn who had the ability to control plants, killed her teacher and spent her time battling against The Flash. Alan Scott was also the alter ego of another superhero called Green Lantern and remained unaware of the fact that his wife was one of his enemies. Rose Canton shouldn't be confused with Rhosyn Forrest, another DC character from an alternate universe who was also known as Thorn.

Barry Allen was the alter ego of The Flash, Steve Trevor was once married to Wonder Woman and Oliver Queen is the real name of another DC Comics superhero, Green Arrow.
10. 'The Jetsons' featured a robot maid named Rosie. What was the name of Rosie's robot boyfriend?

Answer: Mac

Rosie (or Rosey as she was sometimes known) was a one-legged robot who wore a white frilly cap and apron and acted as housekeeper for the Jetson family - George and Jane; their children Judy and Elroy; and Astro the dog. Rosie was a somewhat obsolete model, but that didn't stop her from busily bustling (or rolling) about the house, generally keeping everything clean and tidy. Her boyfriend Mac was introduced in the episode 'Rosey's Boyfriend'; he was built by Henry Orbit, the janitor of the apartment block where the Jetson family live, as a general maintenance robot.

Episodes of the 'The Jetsons' were produced between 1962 and 1963 and again from 1985 to 1987 by Hanna-Barbera Productions. A film, 'Jetsons: The Movie' was made in 1990 and the characters have also featured in comic book series and a range of video games.
