Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first name of the Horne around whom we are going?

Answer: Kenneth

Kenneth Horne was born in 1907. A businessman before WWII it was while serving in the RAF he became involved in radio, creating the fondly remembered "Much-Binding-In-The-Marsh" with colleague Richard Murdoch. When the War ended "Much-Binding" continued for some years then Horne made "Beyond Our Ken" followed by "Round The Horne", all on the BBC.
2. How many Kenneths were there in the cast of "Round The Horne"?

Answer: Two

Kenneth Horne and Kenneth Williams were the two Kenneths. Other cast members were Hugh Paddick and Betty Marsden, with Bill Pertwee for the first few series.
3. One of the memorable characters regularly appearing was the self-confessed 'dirty old man' J. Peasemold Gruntfuttock who was occasionally joined by his wife. Can you remember her name?

Answer: Buttercup

J. Peasemold Gruntfuttock appeared many times on "Round The Horne", played by Kenneth Williams. At one time he declared himself King of Peasemoldia, and he had a fixation on Judith Chalmers.
4. Another character, played by Bill Pertwee, was a television host by the name of Seamus Android. Bearing in mind he was Irish, can you name the real-life host he was based on?

Answer: Eamonn Andrews

Eamonn Andrews was a jovial and very popular television host both on British and Irish television. He was the host of "What's My Line" and "This Is Your Life".
5. The show had an announcer who both opened and closed. Can you name him?

Answer: Douglas Smith

Douglas Smith was an actual BBC announcer who became part of the cast of "Beyond Our Ken" and "Round The Horne". As well as his announcing duties he was often called upon to play parts in the dramas performed on the show, usually some inanimate object like a boat or a house, sometimes a dog or some other animal. On one memorable occasion he played the Earth.
6. Who was the only female member of the cast?

Answer: Betty Marsden

Betty Marsden was a hugely talented actress. She could play a child, teenager, sophisticated lady and old woman, all in the same show! If you have seen the film "Carry On Camping" she is the lady with the very husky and loud laugh.
7. One of Betty Marsden's popular characters was an actress called Fiona, who would appear in short sketches similar to plays by Noel Coward. Can you name her co-star in these sketches?

Answer: Charles

Charles and Fiona appeared in very short sketches, speaking in very clipped tones, clearly meant to be very upper-class. At the start of the sketch they seemed to be a couple or at the very least in love, by the end it would turn out to be something completely mundane, like Charles delivering milk.
8. As with most successful comedies "Round The Horne" gave us many catchphrases. Can you name the character whose catchphrase was "Many times, many, many times"?

Answer: Lady Beatrice Counterblast

Lady Counterblast was born Beatrice Clissold. She was interviewed in her dotage by Kenneth Horne in a segment entitled "The Clissold Saga". Lady Counterblast had been married numerous times and had stories about each husband. Her catchphrase was usually in reply to a completely innocuous question by Horne.
By the way, all the wrong answers are names used in the show.
9. Which character(s) spoke Polari?

Answer: Julian and Sandy

Julian and Sandy were two out of work actors who took other jobs to pay the rent. Very camp in speech and manner it was never actually said they were gay. Julian was played by Hugh Paddick and Sandy by Kenneth Williams. In the final episode we discovered they were actually married, to Julia and Sandra!
Polari is a language spoken by homosexual men when it was still illegal to be so, a code for them to identify one another.
Once again the wrong answers are all characters named in the show.
10. Let's go back to Charles and Fiona. They were announced as being played by 'aging juvenile Binkie Huckerback and who...?

Answer: Dame Celia Molestrangler

Binkie and Dame Celia were played by Hugh Paddick and Betty Marsden and were played absolutely straight. It was beautifully done and very funny.
