Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ralph's hat collection is bigger than you'd think it would be. Ask him what his favourite is, and he'd say the fez. From which country does the fez originally come?

Answer: Morocco

Named, of course, for the Moroccan city of Fes, the fez is a traditional hat (usually coloured red) that came about in the seventeenth century as an indication of status in parts of Morocco. They became a symbol of the Ottoman Empire, and were worn initially by military officials, before becoming more widespread. Nowadays, fezzes are worn by many people across Morocco, Egypt, Turkey and other Arabic countries.

The fez saw a significant resurgence in popularity in Western countries in 2010, thanks to the British science fiction television program 'Doctor Who' in an episode entitled 'The Big Bang', during which the Doctor, the central character, dons a fez and declares that he wears a fez now and that "fezzes are cool".

As Ralph struts around showing off his fez, eburge can't help but think that Ralph too joined the fez craze after the 'Doctor Who' episode. Ralph disagrees and says he's the one who gave Tommy Cooper the idea of wearing a fez.
2. Thinking about a time when the Heidelberg Electric Belt was all the rage brings tears to Ralph's eyes. The wearer had surges of electricity applied to which part of their anatomy?

Answer: The genitalia

This entirely genuine product surely falls into the category of "What on earth were they thinking of?". It was promoted in the first decade of the twentieth century, sold by Sears, and advertisements claimed benefits in combatting exhaustion alongside "impotency, rheumatism, sciatica, lame back, railroad back, insomnia, melancholia, kidney disorder, Bright's disease, dyspepsia, disorders of the liver, female weakness, poor circulation, weak heart action and almost every known disease and weakness".

Ralph shares glendathecat's view that the very idea is quite shocking.
3. Ralph enjoys a bit of retro clothing now and then, and is sporting a hypercolor t-shirt, that he found in a Melbourne Op Shop, around the paddock. This garment changes color when which of these happens?

Answer: The temperature changes

Hypercolor fabrics are colored with a mixture of an ordinary colored dye and a leuco dye, which changes between being colorless and having a characteristic color at some specific temperature. When the temperature is appropriate for it to be colorless, you only see the color of the ordinary dye; when the temperature changes so that the leuco dye becomes colored, you see the color that results from mixing the two colors.

Ralph's paddock-mates like to rest their heads on his t-shirt to make patches change color. Looney_tunes remembers her daughter's friends in the 1980s doing the same thing by scrunching the t-shirt in their hands to create hot spots.
4. Sometimes Ralph the Llama wants to forgo trendy clothes and wear something familiar. On what body part would Ralph wear his chullo when visiting the Andes?

Answer: His head

A chullo is a knitted Peruvian hat, usually with earflaps for keeping out the chill of the Andes. Although they can be made out of sheep's wool, traditional chullos are often made from the wool of vicuna, alpaca or llamas. Chullos sometimes have large tassels on the earflaps.

PDAZ has a chullo woven with a llama design!
5. Which of these is an article of clothing that Ralph would likely wear on a regular trip through the Andes (or in the rain, in a plastic version)?

Answer: Poncho

The poncho is a piece of heavy cloth with a single hole to contain the head and neck-- it drapes over the rest of the body, protecting it from wind, rain, and sun. The poncho is most well-known in Central and South America, especially in the Andes, Ralph's home. Many countries around the world, however, sell rain ponchos, thin plastic versions of the poncho designed to protect the wearer from dreary days.

Pantyhose typically aren't made with plastic though they are clothing. Panatela is a type of cigar and Pancetta is a type of meat, like bacon, and should not be worn unless by Lady Gaga.

Kyle would advise that Ralph avoid wearing any types of meat.
6. To which country will Lucy Llama need to travel to if she wants to get a fancy new pair of lotus shoes?

Answer: China

Lucy Llama would need to travel to China to get some lotus shoes. These very decorative silk shoes, complete with elaborate embroidery, are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. They were a product of the obsolete practice of Chinese foot binding. For hundreds of years, women of the upper class were subject to having the bones in their feet broken and the toes folded over in an attempt to make the smallest possible foot. The practice often ended up crippling the female.

Dcpdddc478 thinks Lucy Llama should be able to buy two pairs in every color.
7. Ralph the Llama has heard of many a political statement made through clothing. In the 1850s early suffragettes popularized a new form of dress that would stick to the Victorian norm of covering the female form but still allow for more ease of movement than the full skirts of the day. What was the name applied by the press to ridicule the style taken from the name of a suffragette from Seneca Falls, NY who promoted the garment?

Answer: Bloomers

The bloomers, named for Amelia Bloomer, of the 1850s were long baggy pants which narrowed around the ankle and were worn under a skirt. The suffragettes were interested in a wide range of reforms that affected women and women's fashion was another area that they attempted to influence. The style did not catch on at the time. The name bloomers have been applied to several other styles since that time, most recently as baggy underpants for women.

Ralph and maninmidohio have no problem seeing how these early bloomers evolved into the pants that women now wear so beautifully - Katherine Hepburn surely had a lot to do with the popularity of the style today.
8. Again indulging his penchant for fine headwear, Ralph finds himself sporting a rather attractive sombrero. Where in the world is the sombrero a significant cultural emblem?

Answer: Mexico

The word 'sombrero' comes from the Spanish 'sombra', which means 'shade'. When we refer to sombreros, we most often mean Mexican sombreros, as the name sombrero can also be used to refer to any hat with a wide brim. The original sombreros were designed by the Spanish, and had the characteristic wide brim but with a flat top. These hats made their way to Mexico where the design was modified to the familiar pointed, round design that we associate with that particular country today.

Ralph revealed to eburge that he was involved in a Mexican version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. Apparently, Dorothy declared her love for these hats when she sang 'Sombrero-ver the Rainbow'.
9. Ralph has just gotten his first keffiyeh, the traditional Arabian headdress. What is the name of the black rope accessory that is worn around the keffiyeh to keep it in place?

Answer: Agal

An agal is a rope or cord worn around the top of the head to hold the flowing fabric of the keffiyeh in place. It can be made of silk, wool, or cotton that is wound tightly around long piece of goats wool. The agal has been worn for hundreds of years by the Bedouin population found in the Middle East.

Dcpddc478 thinks that Ralph may be explorig his inner Camelidae!
10. Because he's a llama, Ralph likes to take the high road and one day he found himself up on the moors facing a man wearing a sgian_dubh. "Hoots mon, the noo" Ralph thought to himself in a terrible Scots accent, "I really should get one of those for the sock on my foreleg." What is a sgian_dubh?

Answer: A knife

A sgian_dubh is a small knife worn tucked into the top of the sock (or hose) worn with traditional Scottish Highland dress. The Gaelic word 'dubh' implies that something is hidden so a sgian_dubh is a hidden knife. However, as it would be rude to wear a hidden weapon inside the house of a friend, the hilt of the sgian_dubh is always visible at the top of the hose. A sgian_dubh would have been used to butcher deer killed on the moors and this role was reflected in the traditional handle design which almost always looked like horn taken from a stag.

Theoretically it's possible for someone to stick a sprig of heather and/or a grouse in their sock but anyone who tries that with a bowl of porridge will probably get laughed out of Scotland. Ralph is not that silly.

The sgian_dubh is worn in the sock on the side of the man's favoured hand; as Ralph has four legs and no hands, flopsymopsy wonders where Ralph will keep his!
