Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The front cover of 1971's 'Another Monty Python Record' appears to be a crossed-out record of Beethoven music, but the introduction (and quick-to-follow apology) at the beginning of the album belies this record was mistaken for what?

Answer: Pleasures of the Dance: A Collection of Norwegian Carpenter Songs

Also heard in the opening cut is an excerpt of 'The Trondheim Hammer Dance', which is held every 25 minutes in the town of Trondheim. Another apology is briefly shoved into the middle of the first 'Spanish Inquisition' skit.
2. From 'Another Monty Python Record' is the skit 'Be A Great Actor', which allows you to voice a character around 'well-known British and Welsh actors' already on the record. You are first given the part of Montague (a forceful, yet bitter, disillusioned and zany Marxist tycoon) in 'A Taste of Evil' by a very good bearded playwright, but a problem develops in the script. What is the problem?

Answer: 'Montague' is dead when the play starts

Two policemen open the play discussing the apparent death by suicide of Montague before the play is interrupted by an apology, which then moves on to another script, an adaptation of 'All Quiet On The Western Front'.
3. From 'Another Monty Python Record' comes 'Stake Your Claim' which deals with people who claim to do amazing things. Which of the following claims does not appear in the skit?

Answer: A person who re-enacted the Battle of Pearl Harbor

Both Mr. Norman Voles (who claimed to write Shakespeare's works) and Mr. Bill Wymiss (the supposed builder of the Taj Mahal) quickly withered under the host's piercing questions and retracted their claims. Mrs. Mittelschmerz changed her mind and claimed to be able to burrow through an elephant (which she knew they didn't have), but the host had the original letter (which was legibly typed) and got Hans to throw her off Beachy Head.
4. While the skit 'Rock Notes' (from 'Monty Python's Contractual Obligation' album in 1980) may not have been used in anything on screen, it did contribute to an actual musical group using one of the names of fictional bands in the skit. Which name can now be found in actual record stores?

Answer: Toad the Wet Sprocket

'Toad the Wet Sprocket' was picked by Glen Phillips, Todd Nichols, Dean Dinning and Randy Guss from the 'Contractual Obligation' album as a joke, but their music styling was anything but, with charted hits like 'Walk on the Ocean', 'All I Want' and 'I Will Not Take These Things For Granted'. Python member Eric Idle, who wrote the skit, said once in an interview he was driving in Los Angeles and, when he heard the name of the band on the radio, nearly ran his car off the road. Probably a good thing no one wanted to name themselves 'Smoked Salmon in a White Wine Sauce'.
5. From the 1972 album, 'Monty Python's Previous Record', which of the following Australian table wines is described as being 'an appellation contrôlée, specially grown for those keen on regurgitation'.

Answer: Chateau Chunder

Written by Eric Idle, using his Aussie accent he also used in 'The Bruces'. Of the other flavors, The Australian Wino Society does recommend a 1970 'Coq do Rod Laver', which has a kick on it like a mule ('At the opening of the Sydney Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the main sewers every half an hour'). 'Melbourne Old-and-Yellow' is a good fighting wine, particularly heavy and should only be used in hand-to-hand combat. 'Perth Pink' is the most famous of the sparkling wines (it is a bottle with a message...and the message is 'Beware').
6. Finish this sentence from 'Monty Python's Previous Record: "While we're waiting to take you back to Lord's, we play you a recording of Alistair Cooke... _________________________'.

Answer: '...being attacked by a duck'.

Mr. Cook (1908-2004), was the long-time host of PBS' 'Masterpiece Theatre'. He is voiced on the record by Eric Idle...and interrupted by an angry duck.
7. From 'Another Monty Python Record', finish the following announcement: 'The Sonatino in E sharp by Antonio Vivaldi, played by Pablo Casals...'

Answer: '...during his 400-foot plunge into a bucket of boiling fat'.

What quickly follows is (slow cello note) followed quickly by 'Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah' to an echo and ending with 'Sploot' (or the equivalent sound of falling into a bucket of boiling fat).
8. From Monty Python's 'Matching Tie and Handkerchief', how long was the recovery of Mr. Humphries, who had undergone an 'Elephant-o-plasty'(having his body attached to parts of an elephant)?

Answer: Three weeks in Intensive Care (and then eight weeks in the zoo).

According to the international financier and surgeon Dr. Reg LeCrisp, the road ahead for poor Mr. Humphries is still long. He can 'still only wash himself in a rather special way, he can only eat buns and is not allowed on public transport'. A more successful patient of Dr. LeCrisp is Mrs. Dudley (whom he is, in fact, sitting on), who was grafted to a mahogany frame and is now a 'jolly comfortable Chesterfield'.
9. 'A Saturday afternoon in November was approaching the time of twilight, and the vast tract of unenclosed wild known as Egdon Heath embrowned itself moment by moment'. This sentence, used for Monty Python's 'Novel Writing' skit from 'Matching Tie and Handkerchief' is actually the first sentence of what Thomas Hardy novel?

Answer: The Return Of The Native

You can't say you never learned anything from Monty Python. 'The Return Of The Native', written in 1878, was indeed part of Hardy's 'Wessex Series' which included 'Madding', 'Tess' and 'Jude' ('Jude' was the final book of the series).
10. From 'Monty Python's Previous Record', what group of people are expressing such interest as to write poetry about the great Yangtze River of China?

Answer: British soccer goalies

The skit, and its sports-themed Yangtze fight song, 'We Love The Yangtze', evokes a blending of 'Match of the Day' and 'National Geographic', which to all but the most zealous Python fan sounds incredibly silly, because it is incredibly silly.
