Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's a perennial Halloween favorite about a group of kids who go trick-or-treating. One gets nothing but a bag of rocks. Two kids wait up all night in a pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin. There's also a dog who thinks he's fighting the Red Baron. Who wrote this Halloween special?

Answer: Charles Schulz

Vince Guaraldi scored the special, playing and arranging a number of songs and composing "Linus and Lucy". The songs Schroder plays for Snoopy at Violet's Halloween party were actually played by Guaraldi. Bill Melendez produced and directed the special as well as preforming as the voice of Snoopy. Lee Mendelson was the executive producer.

Although "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" came out in 1966, Schulz had introduced the idea of the Great Pumpkin in 1959. The October 26, 1959 strip would mark the first time Linus would write a letter to the Great Pumpkin, explaining to Lucy how he rises up out of a pumpkin patch with a bag of toys. This would be part of a series of Halloween themed strips that year that would be part of the TV special nearly a decade later. Interestingly, Sally's line about not wanting to be accused of taking part in a rumble was originally given to Linus in the October 30, 1959 strip.
2. There is a Disney animated story of a school teacher who falls in love with the only daughter of a local farmer and ends up being chased by a headless spirit. Who narrates this tale?

Answer: Bing Crosby

Originally Disney's animated classic "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was paired with "The Wind in the Willows" to make up 1949's "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" Basil Rathbone narrated the first segment, which told the tale of "The Wind in the Willows", as well as providing the voice of a policeman in that segment. Bing Crosby narrated "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" segment as well as provided the singing voices for Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones. Pinto Colving was uncredited as the voice of Ichabod screaming and Clarence Nash was uncredited as the voice of Gunpowder, the horse Ichabod borrows to ride to the Van Tassel party.

Beginning in 1955 Disney would separate the two segments as a part of the Disneyland TV anthology series. "The Wind in the Willows" would be aired February 2, 1955 paired with another Disney adaptation of another Kenneth Grahame work, "The Reluctant Dragon". "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" would air October 26, 1955, just in time for Halloween. In 1963 "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" would once more be released in theaters. The two can be found on DVD and Blue-Ray today as "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad"
3. Marty Feldman stars as Igor, Terri Garr as Inga, Peter Boyle as 'the Monster', Cloris Leachman as Frau Blucher, Madeline Kahn as Elizabeth, and Kenneth Mars as Inspector Kemp, all in a classic 1974 Mel Brooks film. What is the name of Gene Wilder's character?

Answer: Frederick Frankenstein

In "Young Frankenstein" Dr. Frederick Frankenstein is the grandson of Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist who was obsessed with reanimating the dead. Seeking to distance himself from his grandfather, Frederick insists at the beginning of the film that the surname be pronounced FRONK-EN-STEEN. Halfway through the movie he accepts the more common pronunciation.

Victor Frankenstein's only speaking part was a scene where Frederick was reading his journal and the voice was provided by Mel Brooks in an uncredited role.

Henry Frankenstein was the name given to Victor Frankenstein in the 1931 movie "Frankenstein". Ludwig Frankenstein was the son of Victor (Henry) who appeared in the 1942 movie "The Ghost of Frankenstein".
4. In the original "MacGyver" episode "Halloween Knights", MacGyver teams with a most unlikely individual. Who does he team with?

Answer: Murdoc

"MacGyver" never had a crossover with either the original "Magnum, P.I." or "Murder, She Wrote", though both those shows did crossover in the "Magnum, P.I." episode "Novel Connection" and the "Murder, She Wrote" episode "Magnum on Ice". And as Pete was MacGyver's friend and boss at the Phoenix Foundation, he and MacGyver teamed up on numerous occasions.

But Murdoc was MacGyver's greatest enemy, often showing up to try to kill MacGyver. Until he first crossed paths with MacGyver, Murdoc was perhaps the best assassin Homicide International Trust (H.I.T.) had as he never failed to kill his target. After several failed attempts to kill MacGyver Murdoc tries retiring from H.I.T. only for H.I.T. to put a hit out on him. When that failed they kidnapped his sister Ashton to lure him into a trap from which they expected he wouldn't survive. Knowing they have Ashton, Murdoc turn's to MacGyver to help him rescue her.
5. In the third season Halloween episode of "Quantum Leap", what famous horror novelist from Maine did Sam Beckett supposedly give the plots of some of their most famous novels to?

Answer: Stephen King

The time travel series "Quantum Leap" had a number of episodes that have been referred to as brushes with history. In the season three episode "The Boogieman" Sam leapt into the life supposed horror novel Joshua Rey where Sam dreamt he was in a fight with the devil. In the dream people were dying and Sam could do nothing to prevent it. He came to realize that it was the work of the devil, who was trying to get revenge on Sam for putting right what he had made go wrong. After waking from the dream and saving the life of the person Sam was there to help, Sam told those around him what had happened in the dream. Among these was a teenage Stevie King, whom Al confirmed was Stephen King. And Sam had just given him ideas for some of his novels including "Carrie" and "Christine".

Some fans of the show believe this episode has a curse on it. They claim that a high number of VCR and cable failures when this episode is played. However there seems little evidence to support these claims. Still, for these fans the name of the episode is treated much the same as saying "Macbeth" in the theater by actors and they insist on calling it either "The Boogiem*n" or "The Halloween Episode."
6. "Who you gonna call?" Who sang the theme song for the 1984 film about a group of paranormal investigators and eliminators that had the above tagline?

Answer: Ray Parker Jr.

All four performed songs feature in the movie "Ghostbusters". The Bus Boys perform "Cleaning Up the Town", which was used when the Ghostbusters were called to the hotel. Mick Smiley's "Magic" is played immediately following the destruction of the ghost containment unit. And Alessi's "Savin' the Day" was used as the Ghostbusters were driving to their big showdown with Gozer. But the main theme song "Ghostbusters" was performed at least three times throughout the movie. The first performance was at the beginning of the movie. It would then be preformed again during the montage in the middle of the movie that shows how successful the Ghostbusters have become. And finally it was preformed at the end of the movie start just before the closing credits roll.

Ray Parker Jr. and Columbia Pictures were ultimately sued for plagiarism by Huey Lewis who claimed that "Ghostbusters" was too close to his song "I Want a New Drug" The suit was settled out of court. But in a twist of fate Lewis revealed the terms of the settlement in 2001, terms that were apparently to have remained confidential which allowed Parker to sue Lewis for breach of confidentiality.
7. Which actress played an Addams in "The Addams Family" and a Harvey in "Casper" in the '90s?

Answer: Christina Ricci

Ricci played Wednesday Addams in "The Addams Family". The 1991 movie version of the character is a darker version than what appeared in the '60s TV series. Also, it is possible that Wednesday is the oldest of the Addams children in the movie where as Pugsley Addams was the oldest sibling on the TV series.

Just four years later Ricci would play Kat Harvey in "Casper". The character's surname is a reference to Harvey Comics, the company which produced the "Casper the Friendly Ghost" comic books. The character of Casper was originally to have appeared in a children's storybook in the '30s before being picked up for animation by Famous Studios in the '40s. Harvey Comics produced the first Casper comic book four years after his animated debut. Harvey Comics' film arm Harvey Films, also known as Harvey Entertainment Company, was one of the production companies to work on the 1995 film.

Anjelica Huston and Amy Brenneman both played the mother of Ricci's character in "The Addams Family" and "Casper". Huston played Morticia Addams while Brenneman had a brief role as the spirit of Kat's deceased mom Amelia Harvey. As for Lisa Loring, she played Wednesday Addams in the '60s TV series.
8. Which voice actor, known as the man of a thousand voices, voiced nearly every character in "Bugs Bunny's Howl-oween Special" including the titular character himself?

Answer: Mel Blanc

Mel Blanc voiced most Looney Tunes characters at one time or another so the odds are good when you watch old Looney Tunes cartoons that you'll probably hear Blanc. The "Bugs Bunny Howl-oween Special" is really a compilation of several Looney Tunes shorts with only a few original scenes tying them together.
9. Nip it in the bud! What "The Andy Griffith Show" alumnus starred as Luther Heggs in "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" alongside the then future Darrin Stephens?

Answer: Don Knotts

After Don Knotts left "The Andy Griffith Show" the first movie he did was "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken". The story is that when they were looking to write the story Andy Griffith himself suggested they pick an episode of the show and expand it into a feature length movie. Indeed "The Haunted House" and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" have similar plots. Knott's fellow "The Andy Griffith Show" alumnus, Hal Smith, has a small role in the movie playing a character similar to Otis Campbell, the character he played on the show.

Appearing as something of an minor antagonist to Knott's Luther Heggs is Dick Sargent, aka the second Darrin Stevens. "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" premiered a little over three years before Sargent replaced Dick York in the role on "Bewitched" at the start of that show's sixth season.
10. The TV series "M*A*S*H" had a Halloween episode in its final season called "Trick or Treatment". The episode features some of the characters telling ghost stories in the operating room as a way to celebrate Halloween. What does Hawkeye say is the one ghost story no one will be able to top?

Answer: A "dead" soldier coming back to life

At the start of the episode it seems that much of the camp is getting ready to celebrate with a night across the way at Rosie's. Their hopes of a Halloween celebration are dashed when wounded begin to arrive and the surgical staff must spend Halloween patching up the wounded. Colonel Potter kicks off the ghost story telling by telling the story of his wife having a dream about her brother coming in and sitting down on the bed, shaking his head sadly. The next day she gets a call to learn her brother had died. When she called her sister to tell her he'd died of a heart attack, she learned her sister had the same dream she had. Hawkeye then tells the story of his uncle being out at see with the compass being broken, the radio out, and a storm coming up. Through the fog he sees an old fishing boat, The Luck of the Irish, looking like it knows where it's going and follows it in safely to port only to watch it then turn around and head back out. When he told the authorities what had happened, they told him that The Luck of the Irish had sunk twenty years earlier. Then we get Margret telling the story of a woman who took a photo of car, we can only guess that it's wrecked as she specifies the photo is for insurance purposes and that her husband may have died in the wreck. When the woman develops the photo she is shocked to see her husband in the photo, wearing the suit she bought to bury him in.

But the story Hawkeye says no one will be able to top isn't a story at all but an actual event. When the first wave of wounded arrives among them is a soldier who's apparently dead. It's not until Father Mulcahy returns from a Halloween party at the local orphanage that anyone at the camp learns the man is still alive. Though the audience learns this about halfway through the episode when the soldier moves his fingers. It is explained early on by the ambulance driver who brought him in that the aid station was about to be over run and they'd been the only ones able to carry out the "dead" soldier. When Mulcahy starts getting a little upset that nobody had check to see if the man was alive, it is then explained by Potter that what happened at the aid station with them being over run may have caused them not to take as close of a look at a soldier who arrived with no heart beat and too many holes to possibly have survived. Hawkeye then explains that seeing the toe tag causes everyone to think the man is obviously dead. After Mulcahy is congratulated for saving the man's life by alerting folks to the fact that he was still alive Hawkeye states that the story about the soldier is one Halloween story nobody can top.
