Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What wrestler's unintentional action led to a term meaning 'to blow the biggest spot, or move, in a match'?

Answer: Brock Lesnar

The sobering sobriquet 'brocking' was pinned on Brock Lesnar after he nearly broke his neck attempting a Shooting Star Press from the top rope onto Kurt Angle at 'Wrestlemania' 19.
2. Which of the following terms is NOT based on the ring skills of the legendary 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair?

Answer: the 'Flair Sling'

The 'chop' is basically a hard smack to the chest with the edge of your hand, usually followed by the crowd (and the 'Nature Boy') yelling 'WOOOOOO!' The 'flip' is accomplished by flipping over the top turnbuckle and landing feet-first on the other side of the ropes. And, then, there's the famous 'flop', where Flair takes a step or two after a brutal beating, only to fall flat on his face, to the crowd's delight.
3. Nothing gets a crowd more riled than to see their favorite get his head handed to him by the heels, far from the reaches of his tag team partner. What tag team great now lends his name to any good guy or 'babyface' getting seriously mauled during a match?

Answer: Ricky Morton

The handsome Morton, along with Robert Gibson, formed the 'Rock and Roll Express' in the old Mid-South area back in the 1980's. Many was the time Morton found himself on the wrong end of a beat down far from Gibson's extended hand, whether by the Midnight Express, the Road Warriors or the dreaded Four Horsemen. Rogers was one half of the 'Fantastics' with Bobby Fulton, Kiern was a member of the 'Fabulous Ones' with Stan Lane while Randy and Bill made up the hapless Mulkey Brothers, who only had one confirmed win in their WCW careers...and that was by accident.
4. What legendary wrestler's name is now known as a filming technique used to make a big wrestler appear even bigger?

Answer: Andre the Giant

By shooting up from below the wrestler as he enters the ring, to using smaller referees in a match or even by standing on a box during an interview (unusual for a man who was already 7'4" and over 500 pounds), these are now part of what's called the 'Andre Shot'.
5. Don't you hate it when the match is all messed up (either by a run-in or a ref bump) and you don't know who won, but both sides claim they did? Who was the man who lent his name to those kind of matches?

Answer: 'The American Dream' Dusty Rhodes

The infamous 'Dusty finish' came about while Rhodes was head booker, or matchmaker, for the NWA and WCW...during which time he also held the World Heavyweight Championship and the U.S. Heavyweight title. This is not to be confused with the 'schmozz', which is a match with a non-ending so both participants don't lose their 'heat'.
6. If wrestlers get a big reaction from the crowd, it's called drawing 'heat' (cheers for the 'face', boos for the 'heel'), and it's just what they want to hear...that means they're doing their job. What's it called if you get booed regardless of your status and the crowd just plain doesn't like you?

Answer: X-Pac heat

7. You've seen those harrowing moments when a wrestler puts his opponent's ankle in a folded chair and starts stomping away in the hopes of breaking said ankle...what's that called?

Answer: Getting 'pillmanized'

The term came from a rather brutal WWE feud between the former 'Hollywood Blondes'...'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and 'Loose Cannon' Brian Pillman. Pillman had suffered a career ending injury in a car crash shortly before his first appearance in the WWE, so that particular segment of the feud was a 'work'.
8. Every now and then, a brutal match will get to the point where one or more wrestlers are wearing the 'crimson mask' (either by blading or hard way). What wrestler lent his name to the scale by which the blood or 'juice' in a match is gauged?

Answer: The Great Muta

Back in 1992, the Great Muta bladed himself in a match with Hiroshi Hase, which was considered the most gruesome blade job ever performed. Since then, the 'Muta Scale' measures matches from 0.0 (no blood) to 1.0 (Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer at the 'Last Battle of Atlanta').
9. What the name of the unofficial rule which allows any two members of a team consisting of three or more wrestlers to defend a tag team championship?

Answer: The 'Freebird' rule

Michael Hayes, Terry 'Bam Bam' Gordy and Buddy Roberts made up the Freebirds, who ran roughshod over the Mid-South, Texas, Georgia and Florida areas. They made it a habit of using any combination (Hayes/Gordy, Hayes/Roberts or Gordy/Roberts) to defend any of a number of belts won by the trio, regardless of who won the belts in the first place.
10. Most wrestling websites and magazines are at least partly geared for the 'smarks' ('smart marks'...people who know the truth about pro wrestling, but are still fans nonetheless). But what do you call a publication still holding to the old 'kayfabe' (reporting on made-up story-lines as though they are real)?

Answer: An 'Apter mag'

The phrase was named after journalist and photographer Bill Apter, long-time mainstay with 'Pro Wrestling Illustrated'. Apter began his career working for wrestling and boxing magazines published by Stanley Weston. Dave Meltzer is the editor and publisher of the 'Wrestling Observer Newsletter', which is mostly a 'smark' magazine.

A 'rube' is the same as a 'mark'...someone who believes pro wrestling is real.
11. What is the name given to a wrestler who accompanies another wrestler to the ring, usually in the guise of a bodyguard?

Answer: Enforcer

The name was given in honor of 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson, who provided the backbone of the Four Horsemen. 'Diesel' was used by Kevin Nash, who offered protection to Shawn Michaels. Tyson Tomko acted as backup for Christian Cage in the WWE and TNA. 'Big Bubba' Rogers (later the 'Big Bossman') was the bodyguard of Jim Cornette, when he managed the Midnight Express.
12. What do you call the staging area just behind the entrance curtain where the wrestlers enter the ring?

Answer: The 'Gorilla Position'

Legendary wrestler and announcer Gorilla Monsoon was known to stand in that same area, getting WWE wrestlers like the 'Junkyard Dog', 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and Larry Zbyszko ready to make their grand entrances. Since Monsoon's death in 1999, the name stuck and moved out from the WWE to other wrestling locales.
13. The Highlanders are known for their kilts, the Bushwakers wore camouflage and the Rock and Roll Express wore lots...and LOTS...of bandannas. Who wore the cut-off jeans with the really frayed ends (and the occasional big bone around their necks)?

Answer: The Moondogs

There were ten wrestlers who were Moondogs, including 'Rex', 'Spot', 'Rover', 'Spike', 'King' and 'Cujo'...all of whom wore big shaggy blond hair, beards, chewed-on bones and what became known as 'moondogs'...the 'kayfabe' name for frayed denim shorts. The 'Dogs made their fame as brawlers in a number of circuits, including the USWA, WCCW and the WWE.
14. A term for a match or feud that takes an unexpected swerve in the storyline, usually with a controversial twist like sex or race, is branded on what behind-the-scenes talent?

Answer: Vince Russo

To put a swerve in a match or feud to a high and controversial degree is to have that match 'russofied' or given the 'Russo Swerve' (also known as the 'Nitro Swerve'). Vince Russo worked for many years in the backstage of the WWE and helped introduce the edgier 'Attitude Era.' When he and fellow writer Ferrera moved to WCW in 1999, they became known for such stunts as firing Hulk Hogan live on a pay-per-view in 2000 and giving the WCW World Title to actor David Arquette. For the record, Pritchard and Moody are not exactly behind the scenes. Bruce Pritchard, brother of wrestler Tom Pritchard, is a mainstay in the WWE, where he appeared as the smarmy Brother Love. Moody is better known as either Percy Pringle (in the WCCW) or Paul Bearer (in the WWE).
15. A great highlight in any match comes when, after a serious pasting by a 'heel', the 'face' will get a secret reserve of strength out of nowhere and begin beating his opponent back. What's that called?

Answer: Hulking up

Also known as the 'superhuman comeback', it's named for Hulk Hogan, who would endure much punishment before his trademark shaking his arms, shaking off blow after blow, then one final punch by his opponent would have the Hulkster stand up straight, point at his antagonist and begin payback.
