Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Charles Schulz had a nickname given him in childhood by an uncle, which stuck with him throughout his life. What was this?

Answer: Sparky

Charles Monroe Schulz was born in Minneapolis in 1922. He died on 12 February 2000, whereupon the strip came to an end, although repeats are still syndicated. When he was small his uncle called him 'Sparky' after a comic strip character, and the name stuck.
In the UK 'Sparky' is a nickname given to an electrician. 'Chippy' is a nickname for a carpenter, and 'Bones' for a doctor or surgeon. 'Fletcher' is an old English surname of French origin meaning someone who makes arrows or is otherwise involved in archery.
2. What is the occupation of Charlie Brown's father?

Answer: barber

Charlie Brown's father is a barber, as was the father of Charles Schulz. Schulz sometimes drew on his early experiences for writing 'Peanuts'; as well as his and Charlie Brown's fathers having the same occupation, he also had a dog called Spike as a boy. Snoopy has a brother called Spike, who hails from Needles, California, where Schulz spent part of his childhood.
3. Which 'Peanuts' character is known as a 'fuss-budget'?

Answer: Lucy

Lucy Van Pelt is very bossy and bad-tempered, and is universally known among her friends as a fuss-budget. She has two younger brothers, Linus and Rerun. Lucy harbours a secret yearning for Schroeder and can often be seen watching him adoringly while he plays his piano.

She also leans on it, which he finds very annoying. Lucy would love her brother Linus to give up his 'security blanket', a scenario which provides many amusing storylines.
4. Which classical composer is Schroeder's favourite?

Answer: Beethoven

Schroeder loves classical music and is particularly moved by Beethoven, a bust of whom he keeps on top of his toy piano to inspire him as he plays. He is a mine of information on Beethoven's music and life, and makes a point of celebrating his birthday each year.
5. Where does Linus like to be in the run up to Halloween?

Answer: pumpkin patch

Linus spends the nights before Halloween every year waiting in the pumpkin patch for the arrival of 'The Great Pumpkin', a figment of his imagination. He believes 'The Great Pumpkin' always seeks the 'most sincere' pumpkin patch from which to rise before going off to give presents to all the children who have been well-behaved during the year. Linus has waited many years for 'The Great Pumpkin' to appear from his pumpkin patch to no avail, much to the ridicule of his friends, although many of them have kept him company on his vigil over the years.
6. What is the name of Snoopy's bird friend?

Answer: Woodstock

Woodstock can often be found on top of Snoopy's kennel with Snoopy, either conversing with him in his characteristic 'bird script' or typing Snoopy's novel at his dictation on a rather old typewriter. He and Snoopy have many adventures together, notably ice skating, ice hockey, and their scouting treks, on which they are at times accompanied by some of Woodstock's bird friends. Woodstock is a very clumsy flyer, frequently flying upside down and colliding with obstacles.
7. By what affectionate term does Peppermint Patty say her father calls her?

Answer: a rare gem

Peppermint Patty lives on the other side of town from Charlie Brown. She is a tomboy, good at sports but not academically brilliant, always getting 'D' grades. She calls Charlie Brown 'Chuck', much to his dismay, and her team always beats his at baseball. Peppermint Patty lives with her father in a single-parent household, her mother having died.

She is close to him and is very proud that he calls her his 'rare gem'. Her full name is Patricia Reichardt.
8. Who calls Linus my 'Sweet Babboo'?

Answer: Sally

Charlie Brown's little sister Sally is in love with Linus, having had a crush on him since she was small. He generally tolerates her very well, only occasionally getting cross with her when she refers to him as her 'Sweet Babboo'. Sally also gets cross with Linus on occasion, notably concerning his security blanket issues. She is, however, very loyal to him.
9. Charlie Brown has many trials and tribulations to face up to in life. One of these is when Lucy holds the football for him to kick, but pulls it away at the last moment, so he falls. Does Charlie Brown ever get to kick the football in the comic strip? (Yes or No)

Answer: No

No, sadly he never gets to kick the football in the strip. It remains another of the disappointments of Charlie Brown's life, along with the many failures of his baseball team, his ongoing war with the Kite-Eating Tree and his unrequited love for the Little Red-Haired Girl. He shows a lot of quiet courage and determination in the way he deals with the things that go wrong in his life.

Lucy does once tell Charlie Brown she will let him kick the football while she is holding it, but he misses and kicks her hand instead, so he therefore does not kick the football. He does, however, get to kick it in the animated special 'It's Magic, Charlie Brown' but this is in the animated show and not the strip.
10. Where did Charlie Brown's parents buy Snoopy?

Answer: Daisy Hill Puppy Farm

Charlie Brown's parents bought Snoopy for him from the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm to comfort him after he was bullied. Snoopy refers to his owner as 'that round-headed kid'.
Snoopy is without doubt one of the most famous cartoon characters of all time, and he is blessed with a rich imagination. In his mind he takes on several personae, notably as the World War 1 Flying Ace attacking the Red Baron, his kennel being his imaginary 'Sopwith Camel'. Among others, Snoopy's fantasy characters include sunglasses-wearing student 'Joe Cool', a checkout operator and an Olympic skater.
