Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1995 film "Babe", what important contribution did Babe make to his farm?

Answer: Became a sheep-herding pig

The sheep respond to Babe because he asks them very politely to do what he wants. At the conclusion of the movie, Babe wins undisputed first place in a sheep dog trial. This very successful film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won for Best Visual Effects. Real and animatronic pigs and border collies were used to portray the main animal characters. Because pigs grow so quickly, 48 piglets played the role of 'Babe'.

A Yorkshire pig, the 'Babe' in the promotional shots for the film had a suspiciously wiggish-looking gray forelock on his little pink head!
2. Arnold Ziffel was a versatile pig on "Green Acres". Which of the following did he NOT do on the show?

Answer: Win a skydiving competition

Fred and Doris Ziffel treated Arnold as though he was their son. In addition to those listed above, implausible achievements attributed to him in the comedy series included going to school, being able to change the channels on the television, delivering newspapers, winning a film role originally intended for a horse, and predicting the weather. Arnold was also allegedly a gifted painter of abstracts, one of which--"Nude at a Filling Station"--was banned.
3. Wilbur is the pig in "Charlotte's Web." What is the first "miraculous message" that Charlotte writes in order to save him from slaughter?

Answer: SOME PIG

Published in 1952 by E.B. White, "Charlotte's Web" tells the story of the friendship that forms between Wilbur, a pig, and Charlotte, a spider. Knowing that Wilbur is scheduled to be butchered, Charlotte hits on a plan to save him by weaving messages into her web. "SOME PIG" is the first.

As time passes, the messages about Wilbur's worth make him so famous that he is saved from slaughter. After Charlotte's death, future generations of spiders in her line continue to keep Wilbur company.
4. In the children's rhyme, "This Little Piggy", what did the fourth pig do?

Answer: Had none

This rhyme is usually counted on a baby or young child's toes. The full version was published in about 1760, in "The Famous Tommy Thumb's Little Story-Book". In the US, the GEICO insurance company produced an entertaining clip of the pig going, "Wee wee wee" in an ad, which can be found on YouTube by searching for "geico this little piggy commercial."
5. Country music singer Red Foley had a snappy hit in 1950 about a pig from which city?

Answer: Cincinnati

Al Lewis and Guy Wood wrote "Cincinnati Dancing Pig." According to them, "From Duluth to Birmingham, He's the pork chop Dapper Dan..." The song has been covered by Vic Damone, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Joe "Fingers" Carr and Lenny Dee--as an organ instrumental!
6. What porcine friend is seen concluding, "Th-th-th-that's all folks!" at the close of Looney Tunes cartoons?

Answer: Porky Pig

Porky Pig made his debut in 1935 in the animated short, "I Haven't Got a Hat". He is well-known for his stutter. Jim Dougherty, who originally voiced him, had an actual stuttering problem. Because he could not control it and it interfered with recording sessions, he was replaced in 1937 by the multitalented Mel Blanc. Several public figures have commented that they stammered as children, and were pleased to see a character on the screen with whom they could identify.
7. In Disney's "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day," for what is Piglet proclaimed a hero?

Answer: Giving up his home to Owl

Owl's home has been destroyed by the storm. Eeyore mistakenly thinks that Piglet's large home in a beech tree would make an excellent new home for him. Rather than correcting the misconception, Piglet generously gives up his home. Pooh then asks Piglet to come live with HIM. The gang throws a "Hero Party" afterwards for Piglet and Pooh.
8. What is the name of the corrupt pig in George Orwell's "Animal Farm"?

Answer: Napoleon

As the book begins, the animals of the Manor Farm revolt and drive away the human owner of the farm. As time passes, Napoleon uses manipulation and other nefarious means to bring himself to absolute power. By the end of the book, the original "commandment," "All animals are equal," has been amended to "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
9. In "The Simpsons Movie", who had a close relationship with Spider Pig?

Answer: Homer

To save it from slaughter, Homer adopts a pig from a Krusty Burger restaurant, naming it "Spider Pig." He becomes so attached to the pig that Bart becomes jealous and decides that Ned Flanders would be a better father for him. Spider Pig's role is very brief, but memorable!
10. On "The Muppet Show", which puppeteer was primarily responsible for bringing Miss Piggy to life?

Answer: Frank Oz

Miss Piggy will thank us to clarify that her lovely blonde tresses are completely natural--NOT a wig. Miss Piggy was first seen on October 13, 1974, on a Herb Alpert special titled "Herb Alpert and the TJB." Later she appeared on both Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, and in the Muppet movies.

Frank Oz is an incredibly talented puppeteer, voiceover artist and film director. In addition to Miss Piggy, he has given "life" to Fozzie Bear, Grover, Cookie Monster, Bert, Animal, Sam the Eagle and many others. He was responsible for Yoda in the Star Wars films. He co-directed "The Dark Crystal" with Jim Henson and directed "The Muppets Take Manhattan," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and a host of other films.
