Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are playing a $3/$6 Hold'em game and you look down at As3d. This hand is known as a weak Ace because the kicker that goes with your Ace is very low and probably won't help you. Which of the following is NOT another name for a weak Ace?

Answer: Wet Ace

A weak Ace can be referred to in many different ways but Wet Ace is not one of them. In poker playing a weak Ace can get you in a lot of trouble because even if you hit an Ace on the flop, it is very likely that someone else may have an Ace and if they do that their kicker will be better than yours. It feels strong when you hit but it really isn't.
2. In poker, which of these is NOT an example of what the term dead money can mean?

Answer: A rich player who inherited money and loses it playing poker

Dead money started out to mean the money in a pot that was contributed by players no longer in the hand. From that it evolved into a term for players in tournaments who have no realistic chance of winning. It can also refer to a blind that is in play even though the player is away from the table. In tournaments the blinds are taken from a player's stack whether they are present or not.
3. You are in a hand in a poker tournament with only one other player and on the river you bet 200 into a pot of 2000. Your opponent eyes you cautiously and says, "Is that a value bet or a post oak bluff?" First let's look at the term value bet, what is it?

Answer: A value bet is a small bet made where you hoped to get called because it is so small

A value bet is a small bet that is meant to induce your opponent to call because he is getting good value on a call. Basically he is getting the right pot odds to call if he thinks he has a reasonable chance to win the hand. Typically bets are half the pot or more and in this example you bet only 1/10th the pot.

His pot odds would be risk 200 to potentially win 2200 or 11 to 1. Pot odds greater than 2 to 1 are considered favorable odds. Value bets can be made at any time, not just the river.
4. You are in a hand in a poker tournament with only one other player and on the river you bet 200 into a pot of 2000. Your opponent eyes you cautiously and says, "Is that a value bet or a post oak bluff?" A post oak bluff is intended to look like a value bet but with the opposite outcome desired.

Answer: true

A post oak bluff is meant to look like you are trying to trap your opponent into throwing chips away by calling when you actually have a very strong hand, hence a value bet. It is a less risky bluff in that you are not putting as many chips in play to hopefully accomplish the same result as a bigger bluff would accomplish. Many players consider it a weak play.
5. You are in a hand in a Texas Hold'em tournament and after the flop a player pushes all in. You are the only caller. Both of you turn your cards up and your opponent says, "Well at least I have a backdoor flush draw." What does backdoor mean in this context?

Answer: He needs to hit both the turn and the river to win the hand

Backdoor means that a player is in bad shape because they need to hit two more cards to win. In this case it would mean he has three to a flush but must hit runner runner flush cards to beat you. It can also refer to hitting a hand other than the one you intended to hit.

For example, let's say you are on a flush draw but hit runner runner for three of a kind and win the hand. It would be said then that you backdoored the win.
6. In poker terminology, is steaming the same thing as being on a heater?

Answer: No

Steaming is another way of saying being on tilt but can carry a connotation of a greater degree of anger. Basically it means allowing the situation to upset you emotionally so that you become frustrated and no longer think clearly or make good decisions. A heater on the other hand is a rush of winning hands or good cards.
7. You are playing in a game and are accused by another player of making a string bet. What is a string bet and is it a legal action?

Answer: It is a bet made in more than one motion without a declaration of intent and is illegal

String bets are bets made in more than one motion without a declaration of intent and are illegal. Usually they are a raise but the player fails to gather enough chips to make the raise and does not declare their intention to raise. Both raises and bets must be made all in one motion or by declaration.

Some players do not like to talk because they may give a tell away. Some card tables have a line that you must pass before your action is considered done so any motion done in front of that line to gather chips and/or figure out your bet is perfectly legal but once you move past that line you cannot add to the bet/raise.

A player can be forced to make a smaller bet or just call if they are accused of making a string bet.
8. You are playing in a Hold'em tournament and you flop a full house. You check the action and then smooth call when someone bets. What have you done?

Answer: Just called with a strong hand in a situation where you might be expected to raise

A smooth call is a call made with a strong hand where a raise could be made. The reason for such a play is to extract as much profit out of a good hand as possible. If you raise immediately a player with a weaker hand might fold. It allows your opponent to continue to bluff at a pot or even bet at it with what they think is a winner.

A problem with smooth calling is that your opponent could get the cards they need to make a better hand to beat you. In this instance you have a full house but if they outdraw you to four of a kind or a straight flush you would lose the hand.
9. You are in a hand in a Texas Hold'em tournament and you bet on the come against one other player. You outdraw your opponent. First let's look at what outdraw means. Which of these is correct?

Answer: It means you caught cards on subsequent streets to beat your opponent

To outdraw means to catch subsequent cards to win a hand. If you have two pair and your opponent has the nut flush and you hit a card to make a full house then you have outdrawn them. It is the same as to outrun your opponent.
10. You are in a hand in a Texas Hold'em tournament and you bet on the come against one other player. You outdraw your opponent. What does it mean to bet on the come?

Answer: It means to bet at a draw to build the pot hoping you hit your draw

Betting on the come or a come bet means you are betting on a hand in anticipation of hitting the card or cards you need to win the hand. It is betting on a hand that is not yet a winning hand but could become one. In most cases it is a losing bet over time unless the draw is extremely favorable which is usually not the case.
