Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Hold-em, what is Big Slick?

Answer: Having A-K hole cards

Being dealt Big Slick is very good, but it is also dangerous. Typically, many players would go "all-in" in a no-limit game with this hand. But remember that even a pair of Deuces can beat Big Slick.
2. Which of the following hands best describes a Motown?

Answer: Js-Jd-5s-5h-Kc

Two Pair, Jacks and Fives is called Motown because it sounds similar to Jackson 5, one of the more famous artists that was on the Motown record label in the 1970s.
3. When a player presents his/her hand and reveals a Boat, what does he/she have?

Answer: Full House

The origin of a Full House gaining the nickname Boat is rather obscure, but I can tell you this: While filming the card game at the beginning of the movie "Titanic" (1997), director James Cameron knew nothing about poker. So, he had someone else stage the game so that Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) would win tickets to the fated liner. The winning hand was a Full House. Appropriate, yes?
4. In Hold-em, what is a Brunson?

Answer: 10-2 in the Hole

Legendary poker player Doyle Brunson has long favored the 10-2 in the Hole. As a result, that hand has been named for him.
5. Which of the following terms is NOT used to represent a Three-of-a-Kind?

Answer: Run

Set, Trips, and Rolled Up are all terms to describe a Three-of-a-Kind. Trips is pretty self-explanatory (from "triple"). In Hold-em, Pineapple and other similar games, a Set occurs when your pocket pair has a third come out in the flop (the first three community cards). And in Seven-Card Stud, you are Rolled Up if your first three cards have the same value (Example: I was Rolled Up in Sevens in that last hand).

The term Run is a nickname for a Straight.
6. Which of the following hands best describes Wheels?

Answer: Ah-2h-3c-4d-5h

Adapted from the game of Lowball, in which a Five-high Straight is the smallest possible winning hand, this hand is also known as a Bicycle. In a Bicycle deck of cards, the Ace of Spades depicts a man riding a bike.
7. You are playing Texas Hold-em. Your hole cards are Kd-Jh. The flop reveals 9h-7h-8h. Which of the following cards will give you the Nut?

Answer: 10h

The Nut is the card that provides you with the highest possible hand in a round of poker. Typically, a Nut Flush Draw means you have a flush draw that involves the Ace of a given suit. But in this case, the 10h would be the Nut, because you would get a Straight Flush, Jack high.
8. Which of the following terms is used to describe the act of folding a decent (and possibly winnable) hand?

Answer: Laying Down

In my experience, it is a good idea to lay down a Two-Pair. Even though it can be a winnable hand, there is a chance that an opponent could hold Three-of-a-Kind or better. So, watch the bets carefully, and they will tell you if you should lay down.
9. A nickname for the Two (of any suit) is Duck.

Answer: True

More commonly called a Deuce, you will occasionally hear others go "Quack-Quack-Quack" when Twos are revealed during play or from the hole.
10. Which of the following hands best describes Forty Miles?

Answer: 10h-10c-10d-10s-3d

If you get a Four-of-a-Kind in Tens, it is a long-earned and very powerful hand.

Now, what are you doing, sitting there staring at these answers? Come on! Deal me in! :)
