Remember the "Oink!" Comic? Trivia Quiz

In the 1980s I LOVED the "Oink!" comic. Funny, irreverent, unpredictable and downright raunchier than all the other kiddies comics in those days. Yes I remember it well - but do you?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character was the boss/editor of "Oink!"

Answer: Uncle Pigg

Uncle Pigg's staff (with the exception of the "Plops" - the animated small dung heaps who were the office assistants) were all pigs. I think this comic was created by vegetarians, it often made butchers out to be sadists and monsters, not to mention numerous "hints" that pigs, cows and sheep were living beings too.
2. Who was the editor's worst enemy?

Answer: Mary Lighthouse

Mary Lighthouse was a take-off of the famous critic Mary Whitehouse, the founder of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association in the UK.

I certainly hope the real Mary was nowhere near as snotty or ruthless as Madame Lighthouse!
3. One of the main characters was an unhygienic alien who could detach (and engage in dialog with) his internal and external organs. His name was also a monosyllabic not-so-polite action in our culture. What was it?

Answer: Burp

Burp, the alien, often carried a jar on his belt containing his off-world pet. A brown sludge-like creature he refereed to as "My pet specimen from Uranus."

Folk would often respond "From my WHAT?!"
4. Tom Thug was an adolescent skin headed bully who was as thick as he was bald, rude and smelly (don't get me wrong, he was one of my favorites). For the first few issues of "Oink!" he was unable to do something most people can do by the time they're 10. What was it?

Answer: Tie his laces

Tom was still struggling to tie his laces by issue 9, until Uncle Pigg threatened to transfer him to "Whizzer and Chips" unless he did.
"Aagghh! Mercy!" screamed Tom.

Funnily enough, when "Oink!" was discontinued the young thug was transferred to "Buster" and later to the "Whizzer and Chips"!
5. Weedy Willy was another adolescent character, but where Tom Thug was dumb, Willy was weak, paranoid and scrawny. He did have a female friend who occasionally considered him a boyfriend. (Note I said "occasionally".) What was her name?

Answer: Mandy

During the first edition of "Oink!" Willy came across Mandy crying on a park bench. He put on a puppet show to try and cheer her up. Now one of the puppets was a cat and when its head fell off, Willy laughed and pretended that was intentional.

Then Mandy revealed she was crying because her cat had been run over that morning...
6. Pete Throb was another teen aged character, who had a major teenage problem. What was it?

Answer: An enormous pimple

Admittedly, he had the other three at one time or another, but not as much as the recurring pimple on his nose which was the size of small car!
7. Quite often "Oink!" would depict well-known celebrities as pigs, e.g. George Michael was "Gorge Michael", Terry Wogan was "Terry Wogham" and Michael Jackson was "Michael Jaxham". What was the name of Russell Grant the astrologer's parody?

Answer: Russell Grunt

He would print, shall we say, unorthodox horoscopes. E.g. Leo the Lion was in fact "Leo the Liar" in one issue. It read "Today you will stop a bank robbery and become rich and famous. P.S. I'm lying."
8. Every issue of "Oink!" always had a certain theme.

Answer: False

From issue # 8 to issue # 37 (roughly) they had different themes (e.g. war, fantasy, pets, hogmoney, electricity, celebrities, time-travel). But I guess they ran out of ideas and from issue 38 on wards they started printing on new paper with a new size and no more themes.
9. A popular radio character named Frank Sidebottom also featured in "Oink!" What was the name of his pet puppet?

Answer: Little Frank

Here in New Zealand we had never heard his radio show or seen his paper-mache head before, so we did not appreciate his appearance as much as the English.
10. What suit-and-tie-clad character had an odd name that accurately reflected one of his/her features?

Answer: Mr. Bignose

Mr. Bignose was "Oink!"'s resident weirdo. He had a personal rhyming motto I can still recall after all these years:

My name is Mr. Bignose
From my head to my toes
No part of me is other
Than named by my mother
So don't call my knees "John"
And never name my feet "Ron"
Because even a stupid butcher knows
They're all called "Mr. Bignose"!
11. When Uncle Pigg and his staff went on holiday in issue # 7, who filled in for them?

Answer: A literal "skeleton" staff

The skeletons made so many mistakes (e.g. upside-down pages, butchers sneaking past security to advertise, and a centrepage poster of Mary Lighthouse) that Percy Plop secretly rang Uncle Pigg in Bermuda.

When Uncle Pigg heard what was happening to his beloved comic he was so furious that he bellowed down the receiver, and the force of his voice made poor Percy fly across the room and hit the wall!

Uncle Pigg roared "I'll be back on the next plane - you just stick around till I get back!"

Percy, fixed to the wall, muttered "I haven't got much choice sir."
12. What character had a friend named Barney and was unique because he was only a head (i.e. no body, legs, arms, or anything)?

Answer: Harry

Harry was only a head because when he was younger he was a compulsive eater suffered from stomach ache, no friends, and a bad temper. One day he set a genie free and, when offered the standard reward, wished that his aching feet, stomach, and his aching body would go away.

Unfortunately, the Genie took him literally.

Before the Genie vanished he said to Harry "Quit while you're ahead!" (Geddit?)
13. What character had the unfortunate nickname "Uglyface", and was generally shunned by classmates, teachers and even his parents, because it was so?

Answer: Horace Watkins

But Horace's situation improved in later issues of "Oink!". He found a girlfriend, became a rising football star and everyone forgot he was ugly and praised his achievements.

Interestingly, in issue# 20 Horace had flown to Australia to be with his estranged girlfriend Mandy, but they were both eaten by a shark, according to a newspaper headline, and could never be together after all.

The "Oink!" scriptwriters must have taken pity on them because they brought them back to life in subsequent issues!
14. Who was the "Oink!" equivalent of Adrian Mole?

Answer: Hadrian Vile

His page was called "The Sekret Diary Of Hadrian Vile - Aged 8 3/4".

Needless to say his spelling had not matured as much as Sue Townsend's teen aged Adrian Mole's.
15. Complete this line: Roger Rental is completely_______.

Answer: Mental

Roger Rental made quite an impact on my generation. To insult each other at school we would start substituting each other's first initial in "Rental", adding the first name.

E.g John would became "John Jental" and Lucy would be "Lucy Lental".

Naturally we would add "...is completely mental."
