Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not an ear piercing?

Answer: smiley

The "smiley" is the piercing of the upper lip frenulum (webbing inside your mouth). It can also be done on the lower lip, but is less common. This piercing is not anatomically possible for many people because not every one's webbing is pronounced enough to pierce (especially on the lower lip which is why it is less common).

The "smiley" piercing requires lots of aftercare and has a high rate of rejection.
2. Which of the following is a health risk of a "Princess Albertina" piercing?

Answer: urinary tract infection

The "Princess Albertina" is a female genital piercing, which goes through the urethra. Its name is derived from the equivalent male piercing, the "Prince Albert", which is allegedly named after Queen Victoria's Prince Albert. It's a relatively rare piercing, and also quite advanced - it can be very difficult to place, depending on the person's anatomy, and many piercers may be unable or unwilling to do it.
3. Where is an "anti-eyebrow" piercing typically located?

Answer: underneath an eyebrow

The term "anti-" in piercings often refers to a mirror image - the piercing is done directly opposite to where it normally would be. A piercing done lower, just above the cheek bone, is also called an "anti-eyebrow". Other common names for this piercing include upper cheek piercings, "tears" or "teardrops" (when there are two barbells placed symmetrically).
4. There is evidence that women with nipple piercings will experience problems with lactation.

Answer: False

The effect of a nipple piercing on breastfeeding is a common concern among women who wish to get the piercing done. There is no medical evidence that suggests a nipple piercing will harm a woman's ability to lactate or breastfeed in the future, though it is recommended that women pay special attention to the aftercare of nipple piercings to prevent infections. Further recommendations include, allowing the piercing to fully heal before breastfeeding and removing the jewelry before feeding, as it could prevent the baby from properly latching and the jewelry may hurt the baby's mouth or become a choking hazard.
5. What kind of jewelry is normally put in an "industrial" piercing?

Answer: barbell

Technically, the term "industrial" means any two piercings joined together by one piece of jewelry, but it most often used to refer to the joining of two helix (ear cartilage) piercings with one barbell.
6. In Aztec and Mayan culture, the "labret" piercing was commonly worn by who?

Answer: males of higher castes

The "labret" is a lip piercing that is typically worn below the lower lip, just above the chin. A labret requires special aftercare, because it is both an internal and external piercing. Therefore, different measures have to be taken to care for the outside of it and for the half inside your mouth.

A less common name for the labret piercing is the "Mao", named for Mao Zedong's mole on his lower lip. The "labret" piercing was also popular among the American Northwest Coast Indians, among whom it was also a symbol of high status.
7. Which of the following is not a recommended method for healing an oral piercing, such as a tongue piercing?

Answer: use Listerine

Listerine is not recommended because it contains alcohol, which would just irritate the piercing. Most piercing professionals recommend the use of a non-alcoholic mouthwash, or Listerine diluted with water at about a 3-1 ratio. Eating cold foods and taking ibuprofen both help with swelling, and avoiding oral contact with another person is recommended so that the piercing will not be irritated or shifted during healing.
8. Which of these is considered to be a "reverse labret"?

Answer: the Medusa

The "Medusa" is the piercing up the upper lip with a "labret" post, about halfway to the nose, as opposed to just above the chin on the lower lip. It is not rare, but much less common than a regular "labret". The "Monroe" and "Madonna" piercings are two names for the same thing - a cheek piercing where Marilyn Monroe had her famous mole (and "Madonna" for Madonna's mole).

The "Christina" is a female genital piercing.
9. It is safe to use a piercing gun for a belly button piercing.

Answer: False

Piercing guns are designed for and safe for earlobes only. Many people have thought that it was okay for a belly button to be pierced with a gun because it is a fleshy area; but it is difficult to do a belly button piercing properly with a gun because the skin is attached to your body, instead of hanging off like an earlobe.

This results in improper placement of the jewellery and a higher rate of rejection and infection. A belly button should be first clamped to raise the skin up, and then pierced with a needle. Piercing guns are also not recommended for ear cartilage piercings, because the 'shot' could shatter the cartilage, not just around the hole but in the entire ear. Because of this, many places that provide ear piercings such as department stores or hair salons are only legally allowed to pierce earlobes.
10. There is mention of nostril piercing in the Bible.

Answer: True

In Genesis 24:47, a nose ring was given to Rebekah as a gift. It is thought that nose piercing originated in the Middle East about 4000 years ago, and was popular in Indian and Pakistani cultures for many, many years. The nostril piercing was adopted by hippies in the 1960s, and then by punks and other counter-cultures in the 60s and 70s. Today it is quite mainstream, and is fairly accepted by many people, such as school principals and bosses.
