Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is meant by a 'straight'?

Answer: 5 (or more) cards in ascending order.

As all poker players should know, a straight is where you have five cards in consecutive order to the other. They don't have to be of the same suit. All the cards being of the same suit is a Flush, and all of the cards being the same number is impossible, unless you are allowing Jokers to be played, in which case a Joker can take the place of an A, giving you a possible 5th Ace.
2. Which of these hands is the most valuable? (On hand and table)

Answer: 2,2,3,3,3

The 2,2,3,3,3 is what's known as a Full House. It is superior to any flush or straight. A,A,A,J,K is what's known as 3 of a kind, or trips for short. A,2,3,4,5 is a straight, and 2,4,7,9,K of spades is a Flush.
3. What happens if two (or more) people have the same hand at the end of a round?

Answer: The winnings get split.

If two hands are EXACTLY the same, the winnings at the end of the round, otherwise known as the 'pot' gets split between all players who had the winning hand. This is a lot more likely in Holdem than standard poker, as the five cards on the table can be used by everyone, rather than just the hands acting independently of each other.

It's nearly impossible for someone to bet more money than another in poker, unless someone runs out half way through a round, in which case, they will only win the money bet until that point (if they win, of course). If no more money is bet after the person runs out, they can still win the full pot. All of the suits in poker have the same value, so there is no worry about your suit being inferior.
4. When the first three cards are placed on the table, what is this known as?

Answer: Flop

I'm not quite sure why, but the first three cards being placed on the table is known as The Flop. It commences after everyone has finished their first round of bets. Raising before this point is normally silly, no matter what hand you have, because it can go horribly wrong.
5. What is it called when the fourth card is placed on the table?

Answer: The Turn

After the Flop, and a round of betting has taken place, the fourth card is placed, a.k.a the Turn. This is normally the point where things start to heat up in a poker game. By now, you will normally know whether you have a good hand or not.
6. The straight 2,3,4,5,6 beats the A,2,3,4,5 straight.

Answer: True

When an Ace is part of a five high straight, is serves as a low card, meaning it is the lowest value card in the game, at this time only (apart from straight flushes, of course). as six is higher than five, it therefore means that a 2,3,4,5,6 straight will indeed beat an A,2,3,4,5 straight.
7. Which of these hands may also be known as 'quads'?

Answer: A,A,A,A,4

If you know your basic Latin numbers, this ones easy. 'Quadra' means 'four times', where Quads is derived from. The other hands were a K-2 Full House (K,K,K,2,2), a 2 pair with A high (Q,Q, J, J,A), and a straight to 10 (6,7,8,9,10).
8. You just won the pot with a pair of K's and A kicker. What is a kicker?

Answer: The highest card not part of your scoring pairs, trips or quads.

The Kicker is the highest card available, including both in your hand and on the table, other than the winning hand. If it's on the table, everyone has it, so it's less of a threat then. The kicker can be the other card in your hand, but the other card in your hand isn't necessarily the kicker (how's that for a paradox?) because that could've been another K, for all we know.

The kicker can also possibly be the closest card to your winning hand in value, but this is only if all the cards are close together. Example: If you have a 2,7 in your hand, and on the table there is a 3,4,7,7,8, you would have 3 of a kind of 7's with 8 kicker. The 8 is obviously the closest to your 7's in value, but it is the kicker because it is the highest value, not the closest. If we replaced the 8 with a 9, that would become the new kicker. If the 4 was replaced with a 6, and the 9 left as is, the 9 would still be the kicker, due to being the highest value card.

The kicker can't be the highest value card of the same suit as your hand, because we don't know if your hand is only the one suit. It could be 2 (like 1 diamond and 1 club, for example)
9. What is meant by the term 'pockets'?

Answer: You have two cards of the same value in your hand.

If you got confused, pockets is where you have two of the same cards (but different suits) in your hand at the start of a round. This can be any value card, from 2,2 to A,A (which is sometimes known as 'Pocket Rockets, because they look kinda like rockets). Pockets are often useful hands, as they mean you already start with a pair. They aren't a surefire way to win, though, as all they would need to be beaten is for someone else with a higher ranking pair, or higher ranking pockets, even.
10. What is the highest ranking hand in the game?

Answer: Straight Flush

This, coincidentally, is also the rarest hand in the game, as it is the hardest to get, with only 4 different combinations of it (one for each suit). A Royal Flush consists of 10,J,Q,K,A, all of the same suit (say, hearts, for example). If you somehow manage to get this hand while playing, try best to disguise it, because there is no way you can possibly lose!
