Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob Backlund and Pedro Morales were forced to forfeit the WWE Tag Team Championship after winning it at "Showdown at Shea" in the summer of 1980 because the WWE would not allow Backlund, who was the WWE Heavyweight Champion at the time, to simultaneously hold two belts. Who had Backlund and Morales won the Tag Team Championship from?

Answer: The Wild Samoans

The Wild Samoans, Afa and Sika, were such a force in the WWE, that after winning the Tag Team Championship in April of 1980, they began feuding with Backlund for the Heavyweight Championship, with each member of the tag team facing Backlund in individual competition on a regular basis. Shortly after the forfeit, a tournament was held to decide the new champions.

It was won by the Wild Samoans, beginning what would be their second of three WWE Tag Team Championship runs.
2. What was Sgt. Slaughter's personal vehicle when he returned to the WWE in 1983?

Answer: A camouflage limousine

Allegedly, the Cadillac was a gift to Slaughter from the US Marine Corps for outstanding service.
3. Which pop star attacked Captain Lou Albano with her purse, and took a few shots at Roddy Piper as well, when she was a guest on a 1984 installment of The Piper's Pit?

Answer: Cindy Lauper

Lauper made regular appearances with the WWE in 1984-85 in a groundbreaking angle known as the Rock'n Wrestling Connection. She would feud with Piper and Albano, manage Wendy Richter to the WWE Women's Championship and make public appearances with Hulk Hogan.

The Rock'n Wrestling Connection angle was based on co-operation between wrestling and the music industry which provided unprecedented publicity for the WWE and set the table for the first "Wrestlemania". It was a major coup for the WWE, and an important step in the promotion's rise to national pro-wrestling domination.
4. Who had the starring role in the WWE soap opera spoof, Fuji General?

Answer: Don Muraco

Muraco and Mr Fuji where trying to catch the attention of Hollywood by launching a series of pilots that were broadcast on the weekly WWE program TNT. Other pilots were Fuji Vice and Fuji Bandito.

In Fuji General, Muraco played a surgeon trying to navigate an affair with a nurse. His character has many amusing lines, including, "Why should me going back to my wife, ruin a good thing?"
5. Which of the following expressions would you most likely hear WWE broadcaster Gene Okerlund use?

Answer: "You've gotta be kidding me."

Okerlund was a polished straight man whose authority and professionalism added a considerable amount of legitimacy and believability to WWE broadcasts. As a result, he was often expressing incredulity at shenanigans that transpired around him.
6. In 1986, a pod of masked wrestlers billed from Japan entered the WWE and began feuding with the Heenan Family. Who were they?

Answer: The Machines

The Machines were not actually Japanese, but were well-known WWE wrestlers in disguise, most notably the highly recognizable Andre the Giant, who wrestled as Giant Machine. Andre was suffering from back problems at the time and the angle was devised to lessen his work load by putting him in a tag team. Shortly after the Machines were introduced to wrestling audiences, a third Machine was added, further lessening Andre's work load.

The storyline led to the appearance of other Machines resembling WWE performers, including Hulk Machine, who finished off opponents with a leg drop; and Piper Machine, who wore a kilt.
7. Who ambushed Rick Rude and pulled his tights off him in the center of the ring on a weekly edition of "Superstars of Wrestling?"

Answer: Jake Roberts

Rude would often pull women from the audience to kiss in the ring in a segment known as the Rude Awakening. Soon after being rebuffed by a woman who turned out to be Jake Robert's wife Cheryl, Rude began wearing a picture of her face on his tights when he wrestled. Roberts threatened that if Rude wore the tights again, he would pull them off him. He did.
8. Which athletic feat did Dino Bravo accomplish at the 1988 "Royal Rumble"?

Answer: He unofficially broke the world bench press record.

It appeared that Jesse Ventura, who spotted Bravo, may have contributed man-power to the (alleged) record breaking lift. Regardless, it was enough for Bravo to begin billing himself as The World's Strongest Man, an upgrade from his previous moniker, Canada's Strongest Man.
9. Who interfered from ringside to help Randy Savage win the WWE Heavyweight Championship in the tournament final at "Wrestlemania 4"?

Answer: Hulk Hogan

Hogan emerged from the dressing room mid-way through the final match between Savage and Ted Debiase to even the odds because Andre the Giant was in Debiase's corner. When the referee had his back turned, Hogan whacked Debiase with a steel chair, turning the match in Savage's favor and leading to his win. Hogan's involvement in the match allowed him to symbolically pass the belt to Savage and to celebrate in the ring for the fourth straight "Wrestlemania," despite not having wrestled in the main event.
10. Which of the following wrestlers NEVER held a WWE Championship?

Answer: Jimmy Snuka

Snuka, arguably, came closer than any other wrestler in WWE history to winning gold without actually becoming a champion. In the early 80s he was a consistent top-contender both as a heel and face. His challenges to Bob Backlund and Don Muraco, for the Heavyweight Championship and the Intercontinental Championship respectively, were particularly memorable and are high points for that era of pro-wrestling.
