Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which ring veteran of nearly 20 years retired after losing to Ken Patera in 1980?

Answer: Gorilla Monsoon

Monsoon issued a challenge to Patera for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, saying he'd retire if he lost. Their August 23rd match was stopped as a result of Monsoon bleeding, and Patera was declared the winner. Unlike other wrestlers who make promises of retirement, Monsoon was true to his word.

His departure from the ring, however, was the beginning of a second career in the wrestling business that would see him become one of the most prolific and recognized broadcasters in wrestling history. He would remain an important voice and personality for the WWE until his death in 1997.
2. What was written across the back of the Junkyard Dog's trunks?

Answer: Thump

Thump was also the name of the Dog's power-slam finisher, an effective move against lesser opponents but one which was unable to get him a WWE Championship.
3. What happened on the day that is referred to as "Black Saturday"?

Answer: The WWE took control of Georgia's "World Championship Wrestling" television program.

Southern wrestling fans had been watching NWA wrestling on GCW's "World Championship Wrestling" program for 12 years when they were shocked to tune in on Saturday, July 14th, 1984, to see Vince MacMahon introducing a line up of syndicated WWE matches. Letters of protest flooded into the network, the ratings took a nose dive and the show quickly began losing money for the WWE.

In 1985, the WWE sold the time slot to Jim Crocket Promotions which returned NWA programming to "World Championship Wrestling." The venture was a rare set back for the WWE during its 80s expansion.
4. What did Nicolai Volkoff do before matches during his mid-80s run in the WWE?

Answer: He sang the Soviet national anthem.

Volkoff, who was billed as being from the Soviet Union, was a quintessential cold war era heel. He teamed with the Iron Sheik to form an anti-American tag team that succeeded in capturing the WWE Tag Team Championship from the US Express at the original "Wrestlemania".

The wrestler who portrayed Volkoff, however, was actually from Croatia. Fans may also have recognized Volkoff from an earlier WWE run in the 1970s during which time he was billed as being from Mongolia.
5. Who won the first "King of the Ring" tournament?

Answer: Don Muroco

The original "King of the Ring" was a house show held in Foxborough, Massachusetts in July 1985. Muroco won the 16 man tournament defeating the Iron Sheik in the final.

Harley Race, who won the second "King of the Ring," was the first wrestler to parlay winning the tournament into a "King of Wrestling" gimmick, something that would be repeated by winners in later years.
6. Who defeated Cowboy Bob Orton in a boxing match on "Saturday Night's Main Event" in March 1986?

Answer: Mr. T

T won the match in the 3rd round by count out after punching Orton out of the ring. Afterward, Piper, who was in Orton's corner, attacked T and applied a belt whipping.

The match was part of the build up to Piper and T's boxing match several weeks later at "Wrestlemania 2". The Orton match succeeded in raising interest in T's "Wrestlemania" return and was arguably better worked and more entertaining than the more high-profile Piper match that followed.
7. After over 40 years in the business as both a wrestler and manager, Freddie Blassie retired from pro wrestling due to declining health. To whom did he hand over his heel stable?

Answer: Slick

Slick was introduced as the co-manager of the tag team of Nicolie Volcoff and the Iron Sheik before a match on "Superstars of Wrestling" in September, 1986. He soon took over managing Blassie's entire stable and added wrestlers of his own. Slick, who called himself "the Doctor of Style", was a top WWE heel manager until 1991, when he turned face and became The Reverend Slick for a short run before retiring from wrestling.
8. How did Randy Savage injure Ricky Steamboat in the attack that would set the stage for their Intercontinental Championship match at "Wrestlemania 3"?

Answer: He crushed Steamboat's throat with the ring bell.

Steamboat was given a televised title shot against Savage in September 1986. The match turned ugly after referee Dave Hebner was knocked down and crooked referee Danny Davis involved himself in the match, distracting Steamboat. Savage took advantage and crushed Steamboat's throat against the guard rail before dragging him back into the ring and coming off the top rope with the bell.

Steamboat was out of action for several weeks, but he would settle score after his return, winning the Intercontinental Championship from Savage at "Wrestlemania 3" in an epic match that is often cited as the best in "Wrestlemania" history.
9. Which former WWE Heavyweight Champion was scheduled to compete on Hulk Hogan's team at the 1987 "Survivor Series" before being replaced by Don Muroco?

Answer: Superstar Billy Graham

Graham had returned to wrestling and was feuding with Butch Reed in 1987 despite serious damage to Graham's skeleton which he would later claim was the result of years of steroid abuse. The WWE took the unprecedented step of incorporating Graham's real life hip surgery into the story line to add drama to his comeback. Unfortunately for Graham, his physical deterioration had reached a point where he was unable to perform.

After a handful of matches, he was officially put out of commission in an attack by The One Man gang that came during a televised match against Reed. Muroco came to Graham's rescue and would become Graham's replacement at "Survivor Series". Graham would remain involved in wrestling as Muroco's manager for several months before retiring from wrestling for good.
10. In which type of event did Rick Rude and the Ultimate Warrior compete at the 1989 "Royal Rumble"?

Answer: A pose down

The winner was decided by fan reaction and the Warrior easily won all four categories, though the result probably would have been closer had it been decided by a panel of judges. Afterward, Rude attacked the Warrior with a workout bar, setting the stage for their Intercontinental Championship match several weeks later at "Wrestlemania 5"
