Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story starts in Holstein's Books, where Fred Holstein is talking to two potential customers about the crime section of his store. Katrina walks in, and she and Mr. Holstein talk for a few minutes about a rare book that Mr. Holstein received that day. What is the name of the author of this rare first edition book?

Answer: Eric Haugaard

Eric Haugaard is a Danish writer, which is found out later. This first edition is a rare book that Mr. Holstein ordered for Dr. Marcus at Campbell County Community College. After the discussion about the book, Jenny Roberts enters Holstein's Books and she is upset that everyone is treating her like she is helpless and an invalid because she is blind. Katrina asks if she is there to pick up the books her mother ordered and Jenny says yes, because the Roberts family is almost finished with "The Chronicles of Narnia." The two potential customers that Mr. Holstein talked to, actually turn out to be robbers that rob Holstein's of its cash, and also the Haugaard book which they put in Katrina's knapsack. Mr. Holstein pushes the silent alarm and the robbers panic and take Jenny hostage to get away from the police.

They think that she will be the perfect hostage since she is blind and cannot see where they take her.
2. The robbers, Martin Johns and Russell Kosh, take Jenny to their hideout to change out of their disguises and figure out what to do with Jenny. Martin Johns asks Jenny if she would try to run away. He says, "We're ________ flights up and I wouldn't want anything to, you know, happen to you." How many flights up are they?

Answer: 3

They are three flights up from the ground and the room is empty. After the robbers change, Kosh takes Jenny back to the Odyssey police station. She is then taken to her house by the police after Kosh drives off.
3. Jenny talks to Captain Richard Quinn and Detective Pat Ethan about what happened. While Detective Ethan is talking with Jenny, Captain Quinn reports that his officers have found the getaway car. Ethan asks where it was found, and Quinn says "Route 29 near ___________." Where on Route 29 is the getaway car found?

Answer: Odonton

We find later that the getaway car actually belongs to Eugene Meltzner. Eugene had been robbed as well. The robbers took his laptop computer and then they also took his car and used it as the getaway vehicle in the Holstein robbery. Captain Quinn and Eugene look over his car and then they go to his dorm room to double check everything. They find out that his desktop computer had the memory and files completely erased. Eugene also realizes that a box of computer disks was also stolen.

Jenny is telling Detective Ethan about what happened in the hideout. Jenny says "They sat me in an old wooden chair, and I felt the leg of a wooden table with my foot. And the doors creaked...and our feet swished on the floor like it was covered in dirt, no carpet." This is Jenny's description of the hideout. This leads to the sounds outside the hideout.
4. After her description of the hideout, Jenny describes the sounds she heard outside of the building. She says she heard a horn on a truck, gears shifting, the beeping they make when they back up, and hammering. She also heard another sound, but she couldn't identify it. She says it sounded like a machine gun in the old gangster movies. What was this odd sound that our "Perfect Witness" could not identify?

Answer: An industrial pneumatic chisel

Detective Ethan has a police officer find a sound effects catalog and she uses that to find the sound that Jenny could not identify. At first they listen to construction site sound effects. When Captain Quinn tells them about Eugene's car being covered with concrete dust, Detective Ethan finds the demolition site sound effects.

She tells the officer that got the sound effects to "punch in track 47." That is the sound that Jenny heard outside the hideout; an industrial pneumatic chisel, the kind used at demolition sites.
5. Captain Quinn contacts the local zoning office to find out what was being demolished and they fax them a list of any demolition in that area. How many sites are being demolished?

Answer: 3

There are three different places being demolished on the list. One is in the middle of the city of Connelsville, which they rule out because Jenny did not hear any city noises. They rule out zone 12 as well, because it is inside the rail lines, and Jenny said they crossed tracks to and from the hideout, and they would not need to if they had been in zone 12. Plus the demolition of zone 12 was completed three weeks earlier.

They also rule out zone nine, because it is next to a manufacturing plant and a steel mill and Jenny did not hear any of those noises either. Confused? Keep going.
6. Captain Quinn and Detective Ethan continue to examine the map and they find that the new interstate highway is going in soon. In the way of the path of that new highway are three buildings. Quinn and Ethan determine that those buildings would need to be demolished. The only question is: why is that area not on the list of demolition sites?

Answer: The demolition was being carried out by the state office, not the local zoning boards.

The state office is carrying out this particular demolition and therefore, it is not on the local demolition list. Captain Quinn contacts the Capitol and the demolition is stopped. Quinn says that the three buildings were an old office building, a factory, and an apartment building used for immigrant workers at the factory. All three buildings were built around the turn of the century, and were no longer in use.

The office building was taken down the week before. The factory was demolished the day Jenny was taken hostage, and the apartment building is supposed to come down that day, which is where the hideout is located.
7. The demolition is currently being stopped, and Captain Quinn and Detective Ethan are on their way there, along with every available Odyssey police officer. Where is the hideout located?

Answer: Route 32 and Columbia Road

Captain Quinn to Detective Ethan- "Our boys (the robbers) were real smart when they figure a building with any evidence would come down before we'd find it! Paula!"

"Yes, sir?"

"I want every available officer at Route 32 and Columbia Road right now!"

"Right away sir!"

Quinn and Ethan find the hideout and discover Katrina's knapsack with the money still inside. They suspect that the thieves were after the Haugaard book because it was so valuable. That idea is shattered when they discover the Haugaard book is still inside the knapsack! Now the two are left to wonder what they were after. That is the end of part two.
8. Part three begins with Quinn and Ethan trying to figure out the robbery. First, Johns and Kosh rob Eugene's apartment and steal his laptop and disks, and erase everything on his desktop computer. Then they rob Holstein's Books of its cash and the Haugaard book. They take Jenny Roberts hostage and then leave the knapsack full of cash, and the Haugaard book behind. In the confusion, Eugene remembered a report that he written for the Journal of Education. What was this report about?

Answer: Statewide educational trends.

Dr. Marcus was the one that commissioned the report. Eugene would send the report to the Journal of Education. The report was about the statewide educational trends in the state. He had given a copy of his report to Katrina to proofread and she had put it in her knapsack, which was stolen in the robbery.
9. After the police searched the hideout, they found a hand print on one of the doors. The identification of the hand print leads to Martin Johns, one of the robbers. The lab tech calls Captain Quinn and tells him that they found a match. Quinn asks who it is and the tech told him it was Martin __________ Johns. What is Martin Johns' middle name?

Answer: Franklin

Martin Franklin Johns of Connelsville was previously arrested for small time thefts. That is the reason his fingerprints were in the AFIS. The police then go to Connelsville and put Johns under arrest for armed robbery and kidnapping.
10. The entire robbery of Eugene's room and Holstein's Books was carried out by Johns and Kosh. Who was the mastermind behind the whole thing?

Answer: Dr. Marcus

Percival Fenwick wasn't in this episode. He masterminded the robbery of the Odyssey bank in the "Case of the Secret Room." Kosh and Johns executed the robbery in the "Perfect Witness," and Dr. Marcus was the one who masterminded it, despite his being a highly esteemed scholar. As a matter of fact, that is why he masterminded it: he was up for tenure at Campbell County Community College. Detective Ethan wraps up the case by explaining what happened.

"Dr. Marcus hadn't fulfilled a necessary requirement to get it (tenure). He hadn't written a substantial article for a reputable academic journal. Enter Eugene Meltzner. Dr. Marcus had sponsored Eugene's work and insisted it be kept secret. Since Eugene trusted him completely, he saw a prime opportunity to steal Eugene's results."

Marcus hired Johns and Kosh to erase Eugene's computer, and steal his laptop and disks. And they were hired to steal the report he had given to Katrina to proofread. Marcus knew about everything and every copy of the report, and wanted to make sure Eugene didn't have a leg to stand on. But because of the "Perfect Witness," his scheme failed, because they all underestimated the people involved.
