Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During 1985 The WWF Tag Team Titles changed hands on four occasions. Which of the following teams held the belts twice during 1985?

Answer: Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo

Real life brothers in law Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo won their first WWF Tag Team title by defeating Dick Murdock and Adrian Adonis on January 21, 1985. After losing the belts to the legendary duo of Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik at "Wrestlemania" the duo regained them in June 1985.

In August 1985 Windham and Rotundo were defeated by Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake, the original "Dream Team".
2. On August 24, 1985 Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine, aka "The Dream Team" defeated Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo for The WWF Tag Team Titles at The Philadelphia Spectrum. What did Beefcake do to Barry so that Valentine could score a very easy pinfall?

Answer: Rubbed a lit Cigar in his eye

Late in the bout with Valentine in dire straits, manager Johnny Valiant handed Beefcake his lit cigar. Brutus then pushed it into Barry's eye, temporarily blinding him. As Barry rolled around in agony, Valentine scored a rather academic pinfall to win the belts.

The blinding angle was to play out in a feud between the two teams however Barry left for Florida and The British Bulldogs got a push much sooner then expected.
3. In January 1985, WWF Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan celebrated his first year as kingpin. In addition to defending the belt he also was training a protege. Who was this eccentric, brawny and lovable character whom Hogan trained?

Answer: Hillbilly Jim

Hillbilly Jim began appearing at ringside on weekly WWF telecasts in the fall of 1984. Describing himself as Hulk Hogan's biggest fan, he would cheer the heroes and jeer the heels. When the dastardly trio of Bobby Heenan, Big John Studd and Ken Patera were about to snip off Hulk's last few locks of hair, Hillbilly jumped the barricade and saved his idol.

As repayment Hogan trained Hillbilly and took him under his wing, the character was very comedic but did stick around till 1990.
4. Speaking of Hillbilly Jim, it seemed that his hometown of Mudlick, Kentucky was an untapped source of wrestlers. As the year progressed Jim introduced us to several colorful "family" members. Which was never a member of the clan?

Answer: Aunt Annie

Shortly after his debut, Jim suffered a leg injury at the hands of Brutus Beefcake. Recognizing his fan appeal, the powers that be kept the angle going with Jim serving as manager to his extended family. One by one Uncle Elmer, Cousin Junior and finally Cousin Luke made their debuts. Aunt Annie was never a character but she does make some damn good pretzels!
5. In the opening contest of the very first "Wrestlemania" veteran Tito Santana defeated a masked man known as "The Executioner". What rather flamboyant veteran portrayed that masked man on this famous afternoon?

Answer: "Playboy" Buddy Rose

Paul Perschman aka "Playboy" Buddy Rose donned a black jumpsuit and a red mask to battle Tito Santana in the very first bout at "Wrestlemania". Rose had returned to The W.W.F. in late 1984 as a member of "The Heenan Family". For some reason Rose was kept off television and only appeared sporadically at house shows.

At this point the bookers still had some plans for the chubby star and decided to mask him so as not to hurt his reputation. They never did figure out an angle and Rose departed for The A.W.A in the summer of 1985.
6. In June 1985 this future mega star had his long awaited debut and instantly had every heel manager frothing at the mouth for his contract. Which superstar had all the managers battling each other to add him to their stable?

Answer: Randy "Macho Man" Savage

The famous "Battle for The Macho Man" was a highlight during the summer of 1985 and was a way to showcase the great talent of the late Randy Savage. In August 1985 Savage stunned all the heel managers by introducing his real life wife, Elizabeth Hulette, as his valet/manager. Sadly both these stars are gone as Elizabeth passed in 2003 at age 42 from drugs and Savage died in 2011 at age 58 of a massive coronary.
7. On November 7, 1985, the WWF held its very first pay per view event which was called "The Wrestling Classic". The majority of the event centered on a 16-man elimination tournament which saw Randy Savage lose via count out to the popular Junkyard Dog in the final bout. Which star did Savage not defeat in one of the previous rounds?

Answer: Pedro Morales

Fiery Latino star Pedro Morales, although still active at that time, was not entered in the tournament. Savage defeated an aging Ivan Putski in the first round and then used a foreign object to best Ricky Steamboat in the second round. In the semi finals a tired Savage was beaten and battered by The Dynamite Kid but managed to defeat him in a very good bout. That match alone is worth watching this card if you get a chance.
8. Back to "Wrestlemania", which lovable WWF jobber was squashed, literally, by King Kong Bundy in just nine seconds?

Answer: S.D. Jones

For almost a dozen years the mild mannered S.D. Jones was a perennial jobber in The W.W.F. yet the fans still loved him. In order to instantly establish the ferocious reputation of the 458 pound Bundy, Jones lost in just nine seconds. For the next year and a half Bundy was one of the company's top heel attractions.
9. In February 1985, Cowboy Bob Orton legitimately suffered an injury in a bout against Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka at Madison Square Garden. What injury did Orton play up as an angle for nearly an entire year?

Answer: Broken Forearm

Orton did break his forearm in a bout with the legendary Jimmy Snuka at the famed MSG. After being sidelined for six weeks so the injury could heel, Orton returned still wearing the cast under physicians orders. For the next nine months the infamous cast sometimes helped Bob get a win, very often it got him disqualified.

Answer: Hung him over the ropes and whipped him with a belt

In a televised match Muraco and his manager Mr. Fuji viciously double teamed the popular Steamboat until he was almost knocked out cold. Then they hung Ricky over the ring ropes by his own karate belt and whipped him with Fuji's leather pants belt. The feud raged right until early 1986 when "The Dragon" defeated both his foes in a series of "Martial Arts Matches".
11. At the beginning of the summer this wily ring veteran made his first appearance on a WWF telecast. In order to generate instant heat, this star beat the paint out of the ring attendant whom he thought disrespected him. Who was this crazed star?

Answer: "Terrible" Terry Funk

Former N.W.A World Champion Terry Funk made a big splash in his debut match when he beat ring attendant Mel Phillips to a pulp. While taking Funk's ring garments Phillips placed his hat on his own head which set off Terry's famous temper. Although Terry had been promised a main event slot, he spent most of his one year stint feuding with The Junkyard Dog.
12. On May 5, 1985, the WWF broadcast the very first episode of "Saturday Nights Main Event" and a new era was born. On this night the fans witnessed a change of heart as a longtime eccentric heel became a fan favorite. Who was this?

Answer: George "The Animal" Steele

In one of the featured matches on the card Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo battled Steele and W.W.F. Tag Team Champions Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik. Late in the bout at the request of infamous manager Fred Blassie, Volkoff and the Sheik abandoned their partner.

After being left alone Steele was befriended by Captain Lou Albano who later claimed that for some twenty years George had been misunderstood by the fans.
13. On February 18, 1985, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan fought the era's top heel, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper in Madison Square Garden. The ensuing brawl led directly to the creation of "Wrestlemania" the following month. Who was the guest ring announcer for the February 18th contest?

Answer: Bob Costas

Legendary sports announcer Bob Costas did the ring announcing for this match which led to the famous tag team match on March 31, 1985 between Hogan and Mr. T against Piper and Paul Orndorff. Piper and Orndorff were in the process of thrashing Hulk when rock sensation of the era Cyndi Lauper got involved.

When the heels threatened her Mr. T who had been ringside got involved. The rest is history.
14. In the spring of 1985 this eccentric heel made his arrival as a member of "The Heenan Family". Speaking only in grunts and frequently using his head as a battering ram, he did not last long. Who was he?

Answer: The Missing Link

Dewey Robertson aka The Missing Link made his debut alongside Bobby Heenan in May 1985. Despite having great success in W.C.C.W., Florida and the Mid South territories he was largely a flop in the WWF. Perhaps had he been managed by Fred Blassie or Mr. Fuji the gimmick would have gotten a bigger reaction.
15. In November 1985 this feisty undercard wrestler was found dead at the age of thirty, one of the very first in a long line of drug related deaths. Who was this muscular grappler who always gave his all in every contest?

Answer: "Quick Draw" Rick McGraw

"Quick Draw" Rick McGraw was found dead at the tender age of 30 in November 1985, he never was a main event star but did have some popularity. McGraw had actually been with the WWF since 1980 but many feared he would not compete after breaking his neck in an auto accident in 1982.

He beat the odds and made a comeback in the summer of 1984 however this led to a dependency on pain killers. In one of his last bouts Roddy Piper beat McGraw so severely that the referee stopped the contest contributing to a popular rumor that Piper had inflicted deadly injury to him.
