Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the January 7, 1989 edition of "Saturday Nights Main Event" the Red Rooster had his long awaited falling out with manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Each blamed the other when the Rooster lost his match. Who was his opponent on this card?

Answer: Tito Santana

The relationship between The Rooster and Heenan had been far from perfect with Heenan constantly berating and belittling his charge. During the match with the veteran Santana, Heenan and The Rooster got into an argument which allowed Santana to get the win.

Afterwards, Heenan slapped The Rooster which sent him into a rage and he responded by thrashing his former manager. This was probably one of few the highlights of The Rooster's horrendous two year stint.
2. On the January 7, 1989 edition of "Saturday Nights Main Event", Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake lived up to his name by shaving the head of a long time rival. Who lost their locks to "The Barber" on this night?

Answer: "Outlaw" Ron Bass

The big and burly "Outlaw" Ron Bass was shaved as bald as a cue ball by Brutus on this night. Bass had been a thorn in Beefcake's side for many months so the haircutting was especially sweet for Beefcake.
3. On January 15, 1989, the WWF presented the 1989 "Royal Rumble". In one of the under card matches veteran woman wrestler Judy Martin challenged for the WWF Women's Title. Who was the champion on this night?

Answer: Rockin Robin

In October 1988, while the WWF was on tour in France, Rockin Robin upset "Sensational' Sherri to win the title. Robyn would hold onto the belt until it was deactivated by the WWF in April 1989. An interesting fact Robin is the sister of 1980s jobber Sam Houston and both are the half siblings of Jake "The Snake" Roberts.
4. Ax and Smash aka Demolition started "The Rumble" off in an exciting way by drawing numbers one and two respectively. Also by way of a crooked deal with Ted Dibiase, The Big Boss Man and Akeem aka The Twin Towers entered back to back. A third tag team also entered the match one number apart from the other, virtually unnoticed. Who was that tag team?

Answer: The Brain Busters

Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard aka The Brain Busters drew numbers 16 and 17 respectively and no fuss was ever made of it. Naturally Ax and Smash entering at numbers 1 and 2 drew a lot of attention because they had to fight it out for two minutes before another wrestler entered. Also Boss Man and Akeem getting numbers 22 and 23 was emphasized because Ted Dibiase had bribed one of them to give up number 30.
5. Speaking of Ted DiBiase in early 1989, I guess he became tired of trying to win a title and decided to make one of his own. What did Dibiase call his self-made title?

Answer: The Million Dollar Belt

Ted Dibiase literally paid the famed Connecticut jeweler Terry Betteridge one million dollars to make his distinctive belt. Over the years the title has been owned primarily by Dibiase but Jake Roberts, Virgil, Steve Austin and even Ted Dibiase Jr. all had brief possession of it.
6. On April 2, 1989, the WWF presented "Wrestlemania V" which was held for the second straight year at the Trump Plaza. Besides "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, which other WWF legend decided to make his return at that event?

Answer: Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka

Ironically one of Piper's longtime rivals Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka made his return to the WWF during "Wrestlemania V". Snuka was announced to the crowd just prior to the match between Dino Bravo and "Rugged" Ronnie Garvin. By the end of 1989 Snuka's push had cooled off and he remained a glorified jobber with the company until early 1992.

In fact his last MSG appearance was against the newly turned heel Shawn Michaels.
7. "Wrestlemania V" was a special evening for Bobby "The Brain" Heenan because the late, great Rick Rude defeated The Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Intercontinental Title giving Heenan his first title in almost five years with the WWF. What did Heenan do to The Warrior which helped Rude get the victory?

Answer: Pulled and then held The Warrior's leg down while Rude pinned him

After punishing each other for quite a while it became apparent that Rude was going to fall at the hands of The Warrior. In an act of pure and utter desperation Heenan grabbed The Warrior's leg while he attempted a suplex on Rude. As The Warrior crashed to the mat with Rude on top of him for the pin, Heenan held that leg down so The Warrior couldn't kick out.
8. One of the featured matches saw Jake "The Snake" Roberts battle Andre the Giant with Big John Studd serving as a guest referee. Attempting to eliminate Jake's intimidation of Andre with his pet "Damien" another heel attacked Jake before the bout and tried to steal the snake. Who was it?

Answer: Ted Dibiase

Ted Dibiase, a longtime associate of Andre, came down to ringside right as Jake made his arrival and attacked him. Dibiase then grabbed the famous green sack which held the snake and tried to take it from the arena. Teddy got about half way up the isle when Roberts caught him and retrieved his pet python.
9. In a televised incident in the spring of 1989, the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers sparked a heated rivalry with the popular Rockers, Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels. What did they do that started the feud?

Answer: Injured Michaels's throat

The Rockers were scheduled to meet the Rougeau Brothers, now managed by Jimmy Hart, in a televised tag team match. As soon as The Rockers hit ringside Jacques and Raymond jumped them and a wild melee broke out. After a few minutes one of the Rougeaus held Michaels across the ring apron while the other drove Jimmy Hart's megaphone into his throat not once but twice. To the fans horror Michaels was taken away spitting blood from his mouth.
10. In the spring of 1989 Greg Valentine defeated rival Ronnie Garvin in a match with a stipulation that the loser had to retire. Sticking around with the WWF, what did Garvin do during his brief retirement?

Answer: He was a referee

Although he did serve as a guest ring announcer in "Summerslam'89" Garvin's main occupation during his time away from the ring was as a referee. It seemed that more often then not Garvin was assigned to referee matches for his nemesis Greg Valentine, many times costing him the bout. In September 1989, Valentine had had enough and demanded that Ronnie be reinstated as a wrestler.
11. In the spring of 1989 vignettes began to air on weekly WWF telecasts hyping the eventual debut of "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes. To further his reputation as a champion of the common man these skits had him working normal everyday tasks. Which job was Rhodes NEVER shown doing?

Answer: A factory worker

Dusty Rhodes was shown performing a wide variety of tasks including gas station attendant, a plumber, a pizza delivery man, a butcher and even a garbage collector. Factory worker was not one of the skits shown in 1989.
12. In mid-1989, Barry Windham returned for a very brief stint in the WWF. What was Windham referred to as during this time?

Answer: "The Widow Maker"

According to Barry in his own words he was forced to leave WCW in early 1989 when the powers that be did not include his salary in their yearly budget. With nowhere to go Windham called former manager J.J. Dillon, now a front office man for the WWF and "The Widow Maker" was born.

The WWF did very little with Barry during this time which is a shame as he could have had some great bouts with Brutus Beefcake, Hercules Hernandez and Jake Roberts among others.
13. During the year 1989 the man-made moniker of "King" was worn by no less than three different wrestlers. Which of the following was NOT "King" in 1989?

Answer: Harley Race

Hacksaw Jim Duggan defeated Haku in a televised match in May 1989 to win the cape and crown. In September 1989 in another televised match Duggan was defeated by Randy Savage thanks in part to some interference from "Sensational" Sherri. Randy "Macho King" Savage and "Sensational Queen" Sherri would be the last monarchs in the WWF as the gimmick was retired in March 1991. Harley Race did not wear the crown in 1989 although he did wrestle Haku for it at The 1989 "Royal Rumble".
14. In November 1989, the WWF presented the third annual "Survivor Series". How was the format of the matches changed this year?

Answer: There were five matches of four against four

For the first two years the format of the popular "Survivor Series" was four matches of five on five. In the case of the tag team matches it was really ten against ten but still five teams on each side. This year, 1989, saw the teams lessened by one to four members and the card expanded to have a fifth contest.
15. For the second year in a row a notorious heel lived up to his ill-tempered reputation by being intentionally counted out. Who was this?

Answer: Bad News Brown

Bad News Brown actually was a last minute addition to the team of the Big Boss Man as he filled in for Akeem. During the course of the match Brown was accidentally struck by his teammate The Honky Tonk Man and after a brief argument decided to ditch his comrades. Honky Tonk should have expected this because he was Captain of a team at the previous years event in which Brown pulled the exact same stunt. That time it was the legendary Greg Valentine who accidentally hit Bad News.
