Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr Lauren Slaughter is a researcher at the Arab-Anglo Institute in London. Discriminated against by her boss, feeling that her career is at a standstill, she falls into a second job. The job happens to be with an escort service, and subsequently Lauren Slaughter becomes involved with some very dangerous people. The film stars Sigourney Weaver and Michael Caine. Taken from a 1984 novel titled "Half Moon Street", the chilling story was written by an author who often writes travel books in addition to fiction. Name the author.

Answer: Paul Theroux

Paul Theroux is the author of "The Great Railway Bazaar" (1975), "The Old Patagonian Express" (1979) (travel) and "The Mosquito Coast" (1981) (fiction). The book "Half Moon Street" was published containing two separate short novels, not related. One, "Dr. Slaughter", is the basis for the film. The other is called "Dr. DeMarr". "Dr Slaughter" in particular is a very intriguing story.
Sigourney Weaver and Michael Caine give good performances in the film, although the film was not a big critical or box office success.
2. Brenda, a white woman living in a mostly black neighborhood, reports that her son has been kidnapped. She is wounded as well, and claims the attackers were black men. The community is up-in-arms due to recent similar crimes. Lorenzo, an African American police detective, is on the case, and there are some inconsistencies in Brenda's story. Julianne Moore and Samuel L. Jackson star in the 2006 film based on a Richard Price novel. Do you know which it is?

Answer: Freedomland

Richard Price has written several bestselling novels, including "The Wanderers" (1974), "Blood Brothers" (1976), "Clockers" (1992) and "Freedomland" (1998), all of which have been made into movies. The film was directed by Joe Roth, and featured Edie Falco, Ron Eldard and William Forsythe.
3. This 1997 film stars the one and only Pam Grier. Grier plays 44-year-old stewardess Jackie Brown, with a paycheck so paltry she's forced to smuggle money into the U.S. for Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), an arms dealer and cold-blooded killer. She gets caught by the feds, is bailed out by a bondsman who falls in love with Jackie at first sight, and the threatened by ominous Ordell. Next comes how Jackie Brown outsmarts everyone else in the movie. Who wrote the novel on which the film, titled "Jackie Brown", is based?

Answer: Elmore Leonard

Elmore Leonard is one of our finest crime novel writers. In addition to "Rum Punch" (published in 1992, the film is taken from this book), there is "Out of Sight" (1996), "Get Shorty" (1990) and many others. Elmore Leonard was born in New Orleans in 1925. Quentin Tarantino directed "Jackie Brown", and it is near perfection (in my opinion).

The cast is super: Robert Forster (nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Max Cherry, bail bondsman), Michael Keaton, Bridget Fonda, Robert DeNiro. It's an intricate tale, and it all comes together in the end.

Although it's a rather long movie, there's never a dull moment.

Soon Moody informs her that they will be staying in Iran for good. He becomes angry and brutal with her, and she is desperate to escape. But if Betty wants to leave, she'll have to leave their daughter behind. The book and the film tell the story of her struggle to return to the United States, with her daughter. Answer: All the President's Men

"All the President's Men" didn't become a best-seller until after the film was released.
