Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of the "Earthworm Jim" cartoon, Jim is tasked with finding Princess What's-Her-Name and in order to see where she might be, he begins flipping through a book called "The Idiot's Guide to Hideously Dangerous Places". While doing so, he makes a crack about what North American city?

Answer: Detroit, Michigan

Voiced by Dan Castellaneta who also voiced Homer Simpson, Earthworm Jim was a worm that gained incredible powers from his super suit. In the first episode of the cartoon, he grows tired of his friend Peter Puppy always managing to let the villains escape and begins looking for a new sidekick whilst also searching for the princess. Places he visits in the episode include the Planet of Unusually Tall Things, the Planet of Enormous Hammers and the Mountain of Nameless Dread.
2. Comics have been around for a while, haven't they? While many of them were based on superheroes and the like, they began producing several video game-themed comics once the industry began to take off. Which of these video games did NOT have a comic adaptation of some sort?

Answer: "Comix Zone"

"Comix Zone" is about illustrator Sketch Turner who is thrown into his own comic by the said comic's villain. The game is a sidescrolling beat 'em up with players being able to move across the different panels of each level which are nothing more than the pages of his comic. Despite being illustrated by comic book artists, the game never actually got a printed adaption.
3. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic figures in video games. Having broken countless records with his popularity, he's also been a part of multiple non-game related ventures including cartoons, movies and comics. In which series did Sonic occasionally become evil under situations of extreme stress or anger?

Answer: The Fleetway comic series

In "Sonic the Comic" issue #7, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic for the first time. Unlike the heroic symbol of justice that he is portrayed as in other series however, Fleetway Super Sonic was psychotic and often displayed sadistic and even homicidal tendencies.

For example, Sonic and Super Sonic become two separate entities at one point in the series. Shortly afterwards, Super Sonic turned on his then ally Lord Sidewinder but saved Sonic and the Sidewinder gang so that he may have the pleasure of killing them all individually.
4. Video game-based movies have had a long troubled relationship with each other. With directors either trying to do something different with a game's concept or trying to adapt too much of a game into the movie, nothing ever seems to go right. When was the first video game-based movie released?

Answer: 1986

The first movie based on a video game was an animated feature released only in Japan called "Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!" which roughly translates to "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach'. Released almost seven full years before the live action abomination "Super Mario Bros.", this movie featured Mario who journeyed into the Mushroom Kingdom with his brother Luigi to save Peach who'd pleaded for his help before being dragged away by Bowser.

Strangely, Mario was rather shy while Luigi was awfully greedy, personality traits that neither possess outside of this movie.
5. The "Megaman Megamix" and "Megaman Gigamix" manga trilogies were written and illustrated by manga artist Hitoshi Ariga. Giving the characters of the classic "Megaman" series much more personality and more human-like appearances, he was able to write stories that have captivated fans of the series. Which group of classic "Megaman" baddies were NOT portrayed in either series?

Answer: The "Megaman 9" Robot Masters

Though the English translations of both manga trilogies were released after "Megaman 10", the series had been finished for some time by that point. Unlike the Robot Masters of the previous seven "Megaman" games, the Robot Masters of "Megaman 8" only appear in a cameo at the end of the final chapter of "Megaman Gigamix" volume 3, the last in the series.
6. Some video game-based cartoons would go on to become smash hits such as "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Earthworm Jim". Others however... not so much. Which of these game-based cartoons did NOT make it past the initial pilot episode?

Answer: "Bubsy"

Shown on Thanksgiving morning 1993 alongside a "Battletoads" pilot that also failed, "Bubsy" never made it past the pilot episode. Based on the semi-popular game of the same name, the cartoon starred Bubsy the Bobcat as he tried to reclaim a reality-altering helmet from his troublemaking cousins.

The show was criticized for out-of-place usage of stock footage, mediocre animation and the overuse of Bubsy's catchphrase, "What could possibly go wrong?"
7. While we're on the subject, let's talk about the "Saturday Supercade". In 1983, a Saturday morning program featuring small segments of several video game-based toons was released by Ruby Spears who would later create the infamous "Megaman" cartoon. Which of these game-based cartoons was NOT a part of "Saturday Supercade"?

Answer: "Pac-Man"

"Pac-Man" was created by Hanna-Barbera productions and aired for two seasons on ABC. As for the others, Ruby Spears took those games in interesting directions to say the least. "Pitfall!" was about the misadventures of Pitfall Harry, his niece Rhonda, and his pet mountain lion Quick Claw. "Q*Bert" was about a teenage creature and his friends as they fight off the town bullies. Strangest of all, "Frogger" wasn't about a frog trying to cross the street but rather a frog who often went in search of his next big journalistic scoop.
8. In "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie", our speedy hero is tasked with finding and defeating Dr. Robotnik in the movie's first half and fighting off Metal Sonic in the second. Where exactly does this movie take place?

Answer: Planet Freedom

Planet Freedom is broken up into two sections. The first is the Land of the Sky which includes a large series of floating islands connected by a glacier. In the movie, Knuckles states that if the ice bridges connecting the islands together were to break, the islands would float into space and kill everyone.

The second section is the planet's surface which is known as the Land of Darkness in which Robotnik himself abides. Though full of fauna and breathtaking scenery, the ruins of a city in which Robotnik has built Eggmanland bears an eerie resemblance to New York City implying that Planet Freedom may actually be a post-apocalyptic Earth. The fact that Sonic and Tails live in a wrecked jumbo jet furthers this theory.
9. The Archie Sonic comics were only supposed to last four issues yet they've continued publication to this day and now Sonic is facing off against Megaman. Speaking of whom, Megaman once had a comic deal going with Dreamwave Productions that DID only last four issues before the company shut down. In the series, several new Robot Masters were revealed. Which one of these was NOT in the Dreamwave comic series?

Answer: Reflect Man

Express Man robs a bank and Barrage Man attacks the automated intersection lights in Issue #1 while Multiple Man kidnaps Megaman at the end of Issue #2. In the series, Rocky Light is sent to a human high school to interaction with his classmates and thus become more human himself.

The plot threads of the first three issues were dropped when the fourth was released and though Dreamwave promised comics based on "Megaman X", "Darkstalkers" and "Maximo", the company shut down not too long after the fourth "Megaman" issue was released.
10. Uwe Boll is a German director that makes mainly video game-based movies... and they all bomb horribly. In fact, he's such a bad director that he's often considered to be the next Ed Wood who was responsible for "Planet 9 From Outer Space". Infamously, he challenged several of his critics to a boxing match after he received negative feedback to which one of his stinkers?

Answer: "Alone in the Dark"

The PC game "Alone in the Dark" was about a detective that goes to investigate a haunted town. It has been credited as being the first 3D survival horror game. The movie "Alone in the Dark" unsurprisingly takes a lot from the game series including character names and plot points.

However, the movie suffers from poor special effects, blatant plotholes and horrible acting that make it an almost unwatchable mess that has been panned by nearly every critic who has seen it.
