WWF - Wrestling With Pandas Trivia Quiz

Maybe I got a little confused in the title. Perhaps that's why the WWF changed its name to WWE. In any case, it's too late for Ethan the Panda, who is limbering up to face some of the best known wrestlers of WWF's Attitude era (late 1990s-early 2000s).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is it getting hot in here? Ethan the Panda recoils from the flames shooting out from the ring's turnbuckles as his first opponent enters the arena. This red giant wore a mask throughout the Attitude era and was one of the most feared of all wrestlers. What was his name?

Answer: Kane

Kane was an enigmatic and horrifying character of WWF (and later WWE). He entered the WWF in the latter half of the 1990s and, as the character Kane, wore a mask and red wrestling gear which covered most of his body, with the story that he had been badly disfigured by fire. Kane was billed as 7 ft tall and was made even creepier by the fact that he never spoke in the early part of his career. Kane eventually did speak, firstly using a mechanical voice box, though later speaking unassisted by such a device. Kane also later ditched the mask, which made him seem altogether more human and less scary. Fear not, young Ethan!
2. Next up is someone who Ethan the Panda may want to keep away from his female friends, as this wrestler was known as a bit of a womanizer! Which man, who referred to himself as the "Big Valbowski", is this?

Answer: Val Venis

Val Venis (real name Sean Morley) made his WWF debut in 1998 and was set-up as (like I said) a bit of a womanizer (let's just leave it at that). The character of Val Venis was supposed to be an extension of Morley's activities off-stage, and Val quickly made enemies of other wrestlers by trying it on with their girlfriends. One of the better known examples is Debra, who was the on-stage girlfriend of Jeff Jarrett and (for a time) the real-life wife of Steve Austin.
3. Poor Ethan the Panda is afraid of the dark, but when the lights go out in the presence of his next opponent, he is likely to be given a "blood bath". Which wrestler, set up as a vampire, is Ethan's next opponent?

Answer: Gangrel

This sharp-toothed, long-tongued Gothic character was one of the most bizarre of WWF's Attitude era. He would regularly bring with him to the ring a chalice of red liquid which looked like blood, before taking a sip and spraying it all over the ring. He would also terrorise his opponents by covering them in this red liquid while the lights of the entire arena would accommodatingly go out.

He later formed "The Brood" with fellow wrestlers Christian and Edge, who also indulged in these bizarre rituals.
4. "Uh oh" Ethan the Panda says to himself. Approaching the ring is a man billed to be 500 lbs and who is referred to as the "World's Strongest Man". Who is Ethan's next opponent?

Answer: Mark Henry

Mark Henry joined the WWF in 1996 and quickly became part of the Nation of Domination, a wrestling faction which also featured Faarooq and D'Lo Brown. This association was relatively brief and Henry later formed a formidable tag team partnership with D'Lo, and during this period referred to himself as "Sexual Chocolate".
5. Ethan the Panda's next opponent is referred to as the "Ninth Wonder of the World" and is held as the first woman to compete on equal terms against the professional male wrestlers of the WWF. Who is this formidable female?

Answer: Chyna

Chyna joined the WWF in 1997 and it quickly became known that she was a force to be reckoned with. She secured the Women's Championship, as well as the Intercontinental Championship (the first female to do so). Chyna's other claim is being the first woman to take part in the Royal Rumble, which took place in 1999. Chyna's character was also set up as a bit of a backstabber, as she quickly turned on her friends in D-Generation X to join the corporate forces of Vince McMahon.
6. Everything goes dark, with intermittent flashing of lights. Ethan the Panda sees his demonic opponent slowly (slowly) approaching the ring in his wide-brimmed hat. The reputation of this wrestler precedes him, and Ethan winces in fear as this man rolls his eyes to the back of his head. Who is he?

Answer: The Undertaker

The Undertaker is one of the most iconic wrestlers of the Attitude era. He hails from Death Valley and his finishing move is the Tombstone - are you getting a good picture of his character? The Taker (as he was often known) was sometimes accompanied by his coach Paul Bearer (get it?) and was one of the most extreme wrestlers in terms of pushing the boundaries of wrestling. Perhaps the best example of this is his 1996 Hell in a Cell match against Mankind. Most wrestling fans will tell you that this match went down in history as one of the most brutal and memorable fights of all time, and Mankind must be commended for the punishment he took from the Taker, including being choke-slammed through the cell, being thrown off the cell, and being thrown onto a bed of sharp tacks.
7. This wrestler has gone through many character changes, but one of his best known during the Attitude era was as part of D-Generation X. Ethan the Panda needs to be careful against this experienced wrestler, lest he get Pedigreed! Who is this man?

Answer: Triple H

Hunter Hearst Helmsley, better known as Triple H (real name Paul Levesque), has had a long career in WWF/WWE, joining in 1995. Triple H co-founded D-Generation X with Shawn Michaels, Chyna, and Rick Rude, and this became (arguably) the most popular wrestling stable in WWF history.

As time went by, D-Generation X grew, gaining new members such as X-Pac and the New Age Outlaws ("Road Dogg" Jesse James and "Badd Ass" Billy Gunn), but Triple H eventually abandoned the group and became somewhat of a villain, joining forces with Vince McMahon.
8. Ethan the Panda cannot contain his excitement as he sees his next opponent approaching, as this man is one of his favourite actors, however, before embarking on an acting career, this man was one of the most popular (as well as one of the most unpopular) wrestlers of the Attitude era. Who is he?

Answer: The Rock

Now more commonly known as Dwayne Johnson, making films in Hollywood, the Rock started out in WWF in 1996, with fluctuations in popularity. The self-assured athlete did not start out well with wrestling fans, who would regularly chant "Rocky sucks" during his fights.

However, the tide quickly turned as the Rock became a man of the people, and even named one of his trademark moves - the People's Elbow - after his fans.
9. Ethan the Panda wonders how many people he is going to face in his next match, as several names are called out - 3:16, Stone Cold, the Rattlesnake, but these are all nicknames for the same wrestler. Who is he?

Answer: Steve Austin

Steve Austin was the foul-mouthed, beer-loving rebel from Texas who was the thorn in the side of Vince McMahon. Austin relied less on elaborate gimmicks than many of his contemporaries, and his anti-authoritarian stance was clearly popular with the crowds. Despite suffering from a persistent knee injury, Austin managed to claim the WWF Championship six times.
10. Have a nice day, Ethan! The poor little panda now faces an opponent who is clearly mad. This mask-wearing hunchback carries around a sock on his hand which he speaks to, and which he will not hesitate to use as a weapon. Who is he?

Answer: Mankind

Mankind was one of the many characters of Mick Foley (others include Dude Love and Cactus Jack). Mankind was a shaggy-haired fighter who was not averse to using his teeth during wrestling matches. He would also use his friend "Mr Socko" as a weapon - to be more precise, he would shove a sweaty-looking sock into the mouth of his opponent in order to force submission. Lovely!
