Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the movie in which we first hear the iconic phrase "Bond, James Bond"?

Answer: Dr. No

All of the choices are films in which Sean Connery played Bond, but the phrase first appeared in "Dr. No" in 1962 when 007 was introducing himself to Sylvia Trench at a baccarat table when she suggested they raise the stakes - Bond: "I admire your courage Miss...?" Sylvia: "Trench. Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck Mr...?" Bond: "Bond. James Bond"...and the rest, as they say, is history! Miss Trench appeared as Bond's love interest again in "From Russia with Love" in 1963 and was played by Eunice Gayson (a trivia answer if ever there was one). BTW, "Dr. No" was about an evil scientist trying to destroy the U.S. space program.
2. On what TV show could you hear Damon Wayans saying "Homey don't play that"?

Answer: In Living Color

Keenan Ivory Wayans was the original driving force behind the ground-breaking show "In Living Color" which aired from 1990 through 1994. Keenan's brother Damon played Homey D. Clown in recurring sketches where he would say "Homey don't play that" in his protests against the "Man" holding him back.

Other great vignettes included the Homeboy Shopping Network and Men on Films (with 2 snaps up!). Besides the Wayans, "In Living Color" showed off the talents of Jim Carrey (when he was funny), David Alan Grier, Jamie Foxx and the debut of a 'fly girl' whose name was Jennifer Lopez. If you've never seen this show, you might want to stream it; its humor still holds up.
3. Which character would be singing "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"?

Answer: Mary Poppins

Each choice represents a character played by Julie Andrews but, of course, Mary Poppins, the flying nanny, is the correct answer. This 1964 musical fantasy was loosely based on the first book of P.L. Travers' 1934 series. The film takes place in London in 1910; it tells the story of the Banks' family where the children, Jane and Michael, run away from home again which causes their current nanny to leave...and in floats Mary.

In the movie, as opposed to the book, she is kind and gentle rather than strict and pompous (think a pre-Maria Von Trapp with special powers and a bottomless carpet bag).

The movie was nominated for thirteen Oscars and won five.
4. What was the name of the character who said "What you talkin bout Willis"?

Answer: Arnold Jackson

You know I had to ask! On "Diff'rent Strokes" (1978-1986) when Arnold Jackson was speaking to his brother Willis, he would often use his catchphase "What you talkin bout Willis" (at least once every episode). Anyway, it seems that the Jackson's mother worked as housekeeper for rich, white, NY businessman Philip Drummond until her death; after her demise, the 2 black kids from Harlem were taken in by Mr. Drummond and his daughter Kimberly (who, in real life, was quite troubled), and their new housekeeper, Edna Garrett, who worked for Mr. Drummond prior to moving to the Eastland School for Young Women (and that's a 'fact of life'!).
5. Who tells Forrest Gump to "Run Forrest, run!" to get away from the bullies?

Answer: Jenny Curran

In the 1994 movie, unlike Winston Groom's 1986 novel, Forrest is not huge but he is very fast so he gets recruited to play football. Is he cognitively disabled?; well, as he says "stupid is as stupid does". He has been in love with his neighbor, Jenny Curran, since he walked her home from school in first grade and she tries, in her own way, to protect him. Forrest winds up getting involved in the middle of historical events of the 1960s and 1970s (with a great soundtrack!); but he always seems to come out on top. Jenny, well-played by Robin Wright (see "House of Cards"), was an abused child and grows up a confused adult.
6. On what TV show would you hear "Hi, I'm Larry; this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl"?

Answer: Newhart

One of the wackiest TV catchphrases, it was frequently used on the sitcom "Newhart" (1982-1990) starring Bob Newhart (duh?) as Dick Loudon, the owner of the Stratford Inn in Vermont and NOT to be confused with the "Bob Newhart Show" (1972-1978) where Bob was a Chicago psychologist. I bet you can't name the speaker of this catchphrase (I mean besides Larry); if you knew that William Sanderson played the role of Larry, then this quiz may be too easy for you. So Bob not only entertained us throughout the 1970s and the 1980s, I believe his "Newhart" show had one of the best sitcom endings in all of TV, i.e. somewhat like "Dallas", only good!
7. What was the catchphrase often used by Sherlock Holmes in the movies, when talking to his friend?

Answer: "Elementary, my dear Watson."

Did you know that the catchphrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" was never used in the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but was first mentioned in the old Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce; in fact, the phrase was originated by P.G. Wodehouse in Chapter 29 of his 1915 book "Psmith, Journalist".

As for the incorrect choices: "Mister Watson, come here, I want to see you" was said by Alexander Graham Bell and were the first words heard over the telephone. James D. Watson (DNA discoverer) gave us the mind-boggling quote and Dr. John Watson told Sherlock (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) about Christmas being cancelled in the BBC series.
8. On "Hill Street Blues" what was the name of the sergeant who, at the end of roll-call, would say "Let's be careful out there"?

Answer: Phil Esterhaus

Desk Sergeant Phil Esterhaus was played realistically by the late Michael Conrad (1925-1983). He would issue his customary warning "Lets be careful out there" at the end of roll-call (Cue the music...) on the gritty police drama "Hill Street Blues" which took place in an unnamed inner city.

In 1981 and 1982 Michael Conrad won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. During the fourth season of the show at the end of 1983, Conrad died from urethral cancer; the scriptwriters for the show had art imitate life by having Phil Esterhaus die in the episode "Grace Under Pressure".

It was hard to say goodbye...
9. From which movie do we get the famous catch phrase "You talking to me?"

Answer: Taxi Driver

Who could ever forget Travis Bickle, the psychopathic ex-Marine turned NYC taxi driver, looking at himself in the mirror, pulling out a gun and saying "You talking to me...Then who the hell else are you talking to?...Well, I'm the only one here..."? This had to be one of the most iconic roles played by Robert De Niro who has a history of memorable parts. "Taxi Driver", the 1976 film directed by Martin Scorsese, showed the seamy underbelly of the disenfranchised residents of the city, like Iris, the 12-year-old prostitute (played by Jodie Foster) who Travis was obsessed with saving, and his fantasy about "cleansing [the] filth" from the streets; a powerful movie even today!
10. Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in "Apocalypse Now" utters the line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning", but who played the Colonel?

Answer: Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel William 'Bill' Kilgore utters the unforgettable line about the smell of napalm in the morning. "Apocalypse Now" is a 1979 movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola and set during the Vietnam War, starring Marlon Brando and all of the above choices. Among Robert Duvall's other memorable characters during his long career are: Boo Radley in "To Kill A Mockingbird" (1962), Major Frank Burns in the movie "M.A.S.H. (1970), consigliere Tom Hagen in "The Godfather" (1972) and "The Godfather: Part II (1974), and his Oscar winning 1983 role as Mac Sledge in "Tender Mercies". Just one last catchphrase for the road... "I'll be back".
