Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Wrestlemania III's" announced total attendance topped 93,000; at the time, this was claimed to be the largest audience for a North American sporting event. What was the venue for this huge spectacle?

Answer: The Pontiac Silverdome

The logistics of this event were monstrous, with lighting and camera technicians using over seventeen miles of cable!
2. Perhaps the most unusual match of the night was a six-man tag team affair. One team was anchored by King Kong Bundy, the other by Hillbilly Jim. What was unusual about their teammates?

Answer: They were midgets

Hillbilly Jim was teamed with Little Beaver and The Haiti Kid, while Bundy was allied with Little Tokyo and Lord Littlebrook. The match, extremely amusing in a tasteless sort of way, ended when Bundy, frustrated by Little Beaver's evasive tactics thoughout the match, scoop-slammed the smaller man and hit him with an elbow drop.

This move, which meant immediate disqualification (as full-sized wrestlers were not allowed to beat on midgets), drew the ire of Bundy's own teammates, who teamed with Hillbilly Jim and the Haiti Kid in driving the 440-pound Bundy from the ring.

A series of revenge matches between Jim and Bundy was planned (with Little Beaver now acting as some sort of manager to Jim), but Bundy, perhaps having had enough, left wrestling instead.
3. Another match featured WWE mainstay Junkyard Dog against wrestling legend Harley Race. What was the unique outcome of this contest?

Answer: Junkyard Dog had to bow to Race, acknowledging him as the "King" of wrestling.

Harley Race was a seven-time National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion. Unlike most WWE performers at the time, he was actually a very dangerous competitive wrestler, knowing many "hook" holds that could seriously injure a performer who got out of line.

He let the Dog get the best of him in this affair, though--after bowing, Junkyard Dog headbutted Race and strolled around in "The King's" royal vestiments!
4. One of the most anticipated matches of "Wrestlemania III" was the confrontation between "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Adrian Adonis. What was unique about Piper's ring entrance?

Answer: Piper ran to the ring, rather than coming in on a motorized platform like the rest of the wrestlers.

Piper announced his retirement after the match, though he's had several relapses since then.
5. The Piper-Adonis match ended with Adrian Adonis getting a portion of his head shaved. Who did the shaving?

Answer: Brutus Beefcake

Beefcake, who had broken with his partner Greg Valentine after an earlier match, earned the nickname "The Barber" following this match. This dramatic turn of events turned him into a "good guy" with the fans. In wrestling lingo, a dramatic personality change of this sort is referred to as a "face turn", as opposed to a "heel turn" where a good guy turns bad.
6. Perhaps the best performed match of the night was the WWE Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship contest between "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. How many "two counts" (near pins) were there over the course of the match?

Answer: 17

This bout was named 1987's "Match of the Year" by "Pro Wrestling Illustrated" magazine.
7. How did "Wrestlemania III's" Savage-Steamboat match end?

Answer: Savage was pushed from the top rope by George "The Animal" Steele and pinned by Steamboat.

Steele, who outside of wrestling was a math teacher in Minnesota, had a long-running feud with Savage over the "Macho Man's" lovely manager, Elizabeth, a former Miss South Carolina. When Savage ascended the top rope to drop on Steamboat with the ring bell, Steele appeared at ringside, hooked Savage's ankle, and sent him crashing to the canvas. Steamboat then pinned Savage to win the belt.
8. The feature match of the evening pitted Andre the Giant, whom the WWE claimed had never been cleanly pinned in his fifteen-year career, against WWE World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan, who was by far the most popular pro wrestler in North America at the time. In the opening minutes of the bout, Hogan went for a bodyslam, but Andre countered with a bodypress and nearly pinned the champion. Who was the referee counting Andre's near-win?

Answer: Joey Marella

The real-life son of WWE personality Gorilla Monsoon, Marella was later given the nickname "Two-Count Marella" by Andre's manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan .
9. What audacious move did Hogan attempt in the middle of the World Championship match?

Answer: He pulled back the ringside padding and attempted to piledrive Andre into the concrete floor

Andre responded by flipping Hogan back onto the hard surface.
10. What manuver finally ended the Hulk Hogan/Andre the Giant confrontation?

Answer: Hogan bodyslammed Andre, hit him with his signature "legdrop", then covered him for the pin.

Ironically enough, Andre had won a "Slam Match" in "Wrestlemania I" by bodyslamming Big John Studd. Studd had never been bodyslammed before, nor had Andre before "Wrestlemania III", or so the WWE press office claimed. (In fact, there is an extant photo of Harley Race bodyslamming Andre in 1979, and I have also had friends tell me that Antonio Inoki once slammed Andre on one of the Giant's tours of Japan.)
