Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do you call a wrestler who intentionally loses in order to build hype for his/her opponents?

Answer: jobber

Jobbers are, most of the time, rookie wrestlers or non-popular wrestlers who are scripted to lose in order to promote another wrestler. One example of a "jobber" is the WWE's Brooklyn Brawler.
2. What is the term for a wrestler who performs in a manner that generates positive fan reaction?

Answer: baby face

A baby face or simply face wrestler is generally seen as a good guy. Some notable faces include WWE's Hulk Hogan and former WCW/WWE wrestler Bill Goldberg. However, there are some faces like D-Generation X and the late Eddie Guerrero who drew cheers even when they did some not-so-nice things.
3. What is the term used to describe a wrestler who usually cheats and bad mouths fans in order to generate a negative response?

Answer: heel

Heels are the bad guys of wrestling. Some notable heels include "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and the Iron Sheik.
4. Often times a wrestler dresses in a manner that promotes a certain stereotype or wears a costume with a certain theme. What is this called?

Answer: gimmick

A gimmick is a certain theme applied to a certain wrestler. For example WWE's Undertaker uses a "Dead Man" gimmick. Other examples include Doink the Clown, Gangrel (a vampire) and the sumo-wrestler, Yokozuna.
5. Pro wrestling promotions often set up fictional storylines between several superstars to generate interest in a certain match up. Even when outside the ring most wrestlers will adhere to his/or her character and sometimes there will be incidents that appear to be real that are staged by the promotion as part of a wrestler's story? What is the term used to describe this?

Answer: kayfabe

Kayfabe (also known as a work) is a term used to describe actions that promote a wrestler's storyline. Once of the most notorious examples of a kayfabe was the feud between comedian Andy Kaufman and wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler, where they staged a seemingly legitimate fight during an interview with David Letterman.
6. Sometimes in pro wrestling a wrestler will break character or do something unscripted, what is this called?

Answer: a shoot

Shoot is often used to describe an unscripted move or comment made by wrestlers. For example, fan interference or legitimate in-ring injuries may prompt a shoot. Some famous shoots include the infamous "Montreal Screw-Job" and the legitimate fight between the WWE's John Bradshaw Layfield and ECW's Blue Meanie.
7. Which of the following is one of the methods used by wrestlers to make themselves bleed during a match?

Answer: blading

Blading involves the wrestler concealing a razor either on himself or at a hidden area near the ring. The wrestler would "blade" his forehead with a small cut. The sweat on him would then help enhance the illusion of severe bleeding.
8. When a wrestler uses a submission move, what is the wrestler trying to make his opponent do?

Answer: tap-out

When a wrestler uses a submission move, the opponent must try to break free. If he is unable to break the hold he must signal to the referee that he gives up by tapping his hand on the mat, thus "tapping-out" to the hold.
9. What is the term used when a wrestler does not perform a particular move correctly?

Answer: botch

A botched move is when a wrestler improperly performs a certain maneuver. For example, tripping off the top rope or dropping an opponent in an awkward manner. Professional wrestlers often rehearse matches ahead of time to prevent botches, as they can often lead to serious injury.
10. When a promoter sees a wrestler gaining some kind of fan reaction, either positively or negatively, that wrestler will often have winning streaks or cut promotional videos. What is this called?

Answer: a push

Wrestlers who are seen as having a potentially large fan base will be given pushes. They will often consist of title runs or long lasting feuds resulting in the pushed wrestler emerging the victor.
