Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Kraken has appeared in a couple of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, with its first appearance being in "Dead Man's Chest". Which character from the movie controlled the Kraken?

Answer: Davy Jones

"Let no joyful voice be heartened. Let no man look up at the sky with hope. And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake...the Kraken." Those were the words spoken by Davy Jones in "Dead Man's Chest" when his crew was preparing to summon the Kraken. To summon the beast, the crew of the Flying Dutchman turned a capstan which sent shock waves through the ocean to call the Kraken.

Davy Jones was the captain of the Flying Dutchman, and he would collect the souls of anyone that died at sea to become members of his crew. His head resembled an octopus with the tentacles hanging from his face forming his beard. His left hand was a claw like that of a lobster or crab.
2. Kratos, the main character in the "God of War" video game series, had to battle the Kraken in which game?

Answer: God of War II

Kratos had to fight the Kraken on the Island of Creation. The Kraken had four tentacles, two wrapped around pillars and two free to attack. Kratos had to loosen the Kraken's grip and pull a lever to release a bridge that went through the Kraken's mouth to kill it. In addition to being able to attack with its tentacles, the Kraken would spit a green slime from its mouth.

"God of War II" was a continuation of "God of War", which saw Kratos kill Aries to become the new god of war. In the second game, Kratos had his godhood taken away by Zeus, so he had to find the Sisters of Fate to be able to go back in time before the betrayal and avoid it.
3. "Below the thunders of the upper deep; Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea, His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep The Kraken sleepeth..." These are the opening lines of the poem entitled "The Kraken", written by which famous English poet?

Answer: Alfred, Lord Tennyson

"The Kraken" was part of his "Poems, Chiefly Lyrical", published in 1830. Alfred Tennyson was born in Lincolnshire, England in 1809, and he was Poet Laureate from 1850 until his death in 1892. Some of his other works include "The Eagle", "Mariana", and "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
4. The game "Magic: The Gathering" has several different Krakens, including the Polar Kraken and the Tidal Kraken.

Answer: True

A deck entitled "Release the Kraken" was also released and included the Kraken Hatchling. Kraken creatures from the game include the Polar Kraken, Tidal Kraken, and Deep-Sea Kraken. There is also an artifact called the Kraken's Eye.
5. In both the 1981 film "Clash of the Titans" and its 2010 remake, how did Perseus kill the Kraken?

Answer: He turned it to stone using Medusa's head

The Kraken from the 1981 version resembled more of a giant fish man with arms than a squid-like creature. The Kraken from the 2010 version of the movie had arms, but definitely had many tentacles and was a much scarier beast. In the 2010 movie Zeus gave the order to "Release the Kraken!", but in the 1981 version he told Poseidon to "Let loose the last of the Titans!"

Perseus had already killed Medusa and had her head in a bag when he faced the Kraken to save Andromeda, who was to be sacrificed. The Furies had actually stolen the bag from Perseus while the Kraken attacked Argos, but he managed to get it back just in time to save Andromeda from being devoured. He took Medusa's head from the bag and put it in the Kraken's face. The Kraken then turned to stone and began to fall apart.
6. There have been several characters named Kraken, or a variation of it, in comics history. Some of these characters resembled the real Kraken, others only in name. Kraken, the character from Marvel's "Secret Warriors" series (2009-2011), was a member of which terrorist organization?

Answer: HYDRA

Kraken's real name was Daniel Whitehall, and he had a helmet that would create a suit of armor when he put it on. He was one of HYDRA's top assassins and trainers. In one twist of the comic series, it was revealed that Kraken had actually died and Jake Fury was secretly impersonating him.

HYDRA, though spelled in all capital letters, is not an acronym. It refers to the Hydra of mythology. It was a terrorist group looking to achieve world domination.
7. A roller coaster named Kraken opened to the public on June 1, 2000 in which U.S. theme park?

Answer: SeaWorld Orlando

The Kraken is a huge, floorless roller coaster that includes features like a zero-gravity roll, cobra roll, flat spin, and a 119 foot vertical loop.

SeaWorld Orlando opened in 1973 and is well-known for its mascot, Shamu the killer whale. It showcases marine animals and presents shows by animals like killer whales, dolphins, otters, and sea lions.
8. In 2006, the Sci-Fi Channel aired an original movie featuring the Kraken. What was the name of the movie, whose working title was "Deadly Water"?

Answer: Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep

Charlie O'Connell played Ray, a man who survived a Kraken attack that killed his entire family when he was just a kid. As an adult, he and a marine archaeologist named Nicole (Victoria Pratt) set out to find the Greek Opal. Not only did they have to face the Kraken, who was said to protect the opal, but they also had to face off with a mob crime lord. "Deadly Water" was the movie's working title while it was in production. (Note: The movie was made before the channel's name was changed to SyFy, which is why I used its older name in the question.)
9. Which of the following is the original title of the science fiction novel about aliens written by John Wyndham, which was released in the U.S. with the title "Out of the Deeps"?

Answer: The Kraken Wakes

"The Kraken Wakes" was first published in the U.K. in 1953. When the book was published in the U.S., the name was changed to "Out of the Deeps". The book told the tale of an alien invasion where the aliens sought to inhabit the deepest part of Earth's oceans. Several early attempts to investigate by both the British and U.S. governments failed and ended in disaster. Eventually, the aliens began to target all ships on the oceans and melt the polar ice caps to raise sea levels.

Though the book actually had nothing to do with the Kraken itself, the title referenced Lord Tennyson's poem.
10. In 1984, a heavy metal band called Kraken was formed in which Spanish-speaking country?

Answer: Colombia

The group was formed in Medellin, Colombia with vocalist and songwriter Elkin Ramirez leading the group. The Spanish language magazine "Shock" named the band 'Best Hard Rock Band' for 2010. Some of their albums include "Kraken", "Kraken II", "Kraken: Una Leyenda del Rock", and "Humana Deshumanizacion".

In 2009, they launched the album "Humana Deshumanizacion" along with a concert in their hometown of Medellin, Colombia to celebrate their 25 years in the music industry.
