Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Harry and Marv are the squirrely burglars in the movie "Home Alone" who are no match for 8 year old Kevin, who takes them down with a series of booby traps. What do Harry and Marv (or Marv, at least) call themselves?

Answer: The Wet Bandits

The first in what became a franchise, "Home Alone" (1990) stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, a young boy who is accidentally left home alone over Christmas while his family goes on holiday to Paris. Meanwhile, Harry and Marv have been burglarizing houses in Kevin's neighbourhood, specifically targeting houses where the occupants have left for the holidays. Marv wants them to have a special signature - so he stops up the kitchen sink and leaves the water running to flood the houses they've robbed, hence the Wet Bandits.

Kevin realizes that Harry and Marv plan to break into his house, and at first puts them off by playing music and making it appear as if the house is full of people. When Harry and Marv figure out that Kevin is there alone, they decide to proceed with their plan, thinking they can easily take on a kid. Kevin defends himself and his house with many booby traps, some very elaborate, and when Harry and Marv break in, they get caught in an awful lot of them.
2. Professor Hinkle, a magician who loses his hat, is the primary antagonist in which TV Christmas special?

Answer: Frosty the Snowman

A classic Rankin/Bass production, "Frosty the Snowman" first aired in 1969. In the special, a group of kids build a snowman near their school. The magician Professor Hinkle is also at the school because he was performing magic for school Christmas party. Thanks to a gust of wind, Hinkle's hat ends up on the snowman's (now named Frosty) head - and it's a magic hat that causes Frosty to come to life.

Professor Hinkle understandably wants his magic hat back, and when his first attempt to get it back fails, he pursues Frosty and Karen, one of the kids, on their quest to get Frosty to the North Pole where we won't melt and can stay alive.
3. Who is the wheelchair-bound antagonist in the classic Christmas movie "It's a Wonderful Life"?

Answer: Mr. Potter

Henry F. Potter is played in the 1946 film by actor Lionel Barrymore; the character is portrayed as wheelchair bound because Barrymore required a wheelchair himself at this point in his life. The character of Mr. Potter was named as number 6 on the American Film Institute's list of 50 greatest villains in American film history in 2003.

Potter definitely doesn't have much Christmas spirit, nor does he show any kindness or generosity at any other time of year. He makes several attempts to ruin or takeover the main character George Bailey's family business, a savings and loan institution. He gets his best chance when Uncle Billy Bailey makes a mistake and loses a large sum of money; actually Potter ends up with the money and keeps it, knowing full well George and Billy are looking for it. Though the Baileys recover in the end, Potter more or less gets away with all his nastiness and misdeeds. Hollywood rumour is that there is supposedly a long lost ending to the film that sees Mr. Potter die but there is no firm evidence that any such scene ever existed.
4. In the yearly TV Christmas special "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer", the Abominable Snowmonster of the North hates Christmas and holds Rudolph's family hostage. What is the snowmonster called for short?

Answer: Bumble

This Rankin/Bass production first aired in 1964 and was based on the familiar song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer".

Young Rudolph is treated poorly in Christmastown; the other young reindeer make fun of his red nose and Santa doesn't want a red-nosed reindeer pulling his sleigh either. Eventually, Rudolph decides to run away with Hermey, an elf who longs to be a dentist. Rudolph's family is out searching for him, and they get captured by the Bumble. They, and Rudolph who was trapped trying to save them, are eventually rescued by Hermey and a prospector named Yukon Cornelius, who knows all about the Bumble.
5. In a 1992 TV movie starring Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, the girls are kidnapped just before Christmas by (not very harmful) villains Shirley and Harvey. What's the title of the TV movie?

Answer: To Grandmother's House We Go

In this TV movie, Mary Kate and Ashley play Sarah and Julie, twin sisters who decide to run away to their grandmother's house to give their mother a break from them. They encounter a delivery man they know and spend the day doing his rounds with him in his truck, thinking he will take them to grandma's house (though he actually plans to take them home to their mom at the end of the day).

But then Harvey and Shirley show up and steal the delivery truck - with the girls in the back. Shirley hatches the plan to hold them for ransom. Harvey is rather soft-hearted for a criminal though, and in the end confesses everything to the police.
6. In third installment of "The Santa Clause" movie franchise, another member of the Council of Legendary Characters tries to get rid of Santa and take over the North Pole. Who is the villain in this movie?

Answer: Jack Frost

"The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" was released in 2006, following "The Santa Clause" in 1994 and "The Santa Clause 2: The Mrs. Clause" in 2002. Tim Allen stars as Santa (aka Scott Calvin) in all three.

In "The Escape Clause", Jack Frost is eager to have a holiday where he is the central figure, and thinks he is a natural fit for the Christmas season. He executes a devious plan where he gets Santa to evoke the Escape Clause without knowing it. Then, it's as if Scott Calvin never became Santa; back in 1994, Jack Frost became Santa instead and now 'Frostmas' is celebrated. Scott manages to set things right with the help of his family.
7. Ebeneezer Scrooge from the Dickens novel "A Christmas Carol" is the original Christmas villain. Which film adaptation of the story features a song about Scrooge that goes "There goes Mr. Humbug, there goes Mr. Grim. If they gave a prize for being mean, the winner would be him."?

Answer: The Muppet Christmas Carol

Scrooge is the miser with no Christmas spirit who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The ghosts help Scrooge change his ways and be nicer to the people in his life.

"The Muppet Christmas Carol" was released in 1992 and features Michael Caine as Scrooge. The rest of the cast is played by Muppets; Kermit stars as Bob Cratchit. The song mentioned in the question is titled "Scrooge" and is sung by the Muppet cast.
8. Which creature from Austrian/German folklore was adapted into a feature film in 2015 and is sort of an 'anti-Santa Claus'?

Answer: Krampus

Where Santa delivers gifts and Christmas joy for good children all over the world, Krampus is a horned creature said to punish (including physical punishment) naughty children at Christmas time.

"Krampus" (2015) has the title monster terrorizing a family's Christmas celebrations; it's advertised as a horror-comedy.
9. Who is the mean and grouchy mayor of Sombertown in the TV Christmas special "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town"?

Answer: Burgermeister Meisterburger

Yet another Rankin/Bass special, "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" first aired in 1970. It features Mickey Rooney as Kris Kringle/Santa Claus.

In the story, Kris Kringle is the adopted son of a family of toy-making elves who volunteers to deliver toys to the children of Sombertown. Mayor Burgermeister Meisterburger hates toys and has banned them from Sombertown, so naturally he tries to capture Kris Kringle. Kris becomes Santa Claus and triumphs over Meisterburger.

The Winter Warlock is originally another antagonist in this special but ends up becoming friends with Kris Kringle.
10. The song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" features in both the 1966 TV version of "Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" as well as the theatrical film version from 2000. Which of the following options is NOT a line in the song?

Answer: "You're covered in disgust"

The song is original to the 1966 animated TV special, in which it is performed by Thurl Ravenscroft. In the movie (2000), lead actor Jim Carrey sings it himself as he gets ready to go into Whoville to ruin everyone's Christmas.

The Dr Seuss story from which both the TV and movie "Grinch" are adapted was originally published in 1957 and introduced the bitter green character known as the Grinch, who hates Christmas with a passion. Unfortunately for the Grinch, he lives on a mountain above Whoville, a town whose residents (the Whos) love Christmas. The Grinch decides to put a stop to Christmas by going into town and stealing everything to do with the holiday (the decorations, the gifts, the food - everything). When the Whos celebrate anyway without all the stuff, the Grinch realizes the true meaning of Christmas and gives everything back.
