Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 2004 British film, featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, was a humourous parody of other zombie films like 'Dawn of the Dead'?

Answer: Shaun of the Dead

Simon Pegg plays the titular character Shaun who tries to deal with his dull life during a zombie outbreak. The film features a cast of well-known British actors and comics including Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy, Jessica Stevenson and Peter Serafinowicz. Written by Pegg and frequent collaborator Edgar Wright, 'Shaun of the Dead' was a big hit amongst cinema-goers and industry critics, becoming one of the most popular British comedy films and gaining a significant cult following.
2. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin fight their way across America in which 2009 film?

Answer: Zombieland

'Zombieland' centres around a group of four people who find themselves working together after a strain of mad cow disease infects humans and initiates a zombie epidemic. The characters are named for places that are significant to them. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is on his way to see if his parents have survived the zombie outbreak in Columbus, Ohio; Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) wants desperately to get his hands on the last Twinkies in America; Wichita and Little Rock (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) are sisters who use their skills as con artists to survive by appropriating weapons and supplies from uninfected travellers. One of the most amusing scenes in the film features Bill Murray in a cameo role, who disguises himself as a zombie so that he can play golf uninterrupted. Ultimately, he is shot by Columbus when he is mistaken for an actual zombie.
3. Which zombie-centric American television series, starring Andrew Lincoln, has been very popular in the States since hitting screens in 2010?

Answer: The Walking Dead

Following the trend of many zombie films and television programmes, 'The Walking Dead' stars Andrew Lincoln in the central role of Rick Grimes, who searches for friends and family after zombies (referred to in the series as walkers due to their slow, shuffling gait) begin to populate America.

The series itself is actually based upon a series of comics by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, which began in 2003.
4. In which music video by Michael Jackson will you see him dancing with a troupe of zombies?

Answer: Thriller

The video, which was released in 1983 runs for over 13 minutes, and features Michael Jackson as he shifts between zombie and human whilst dancing with his undead friends and frightening his date. Vincent Price, whose distinctive and haunting voice also features in both the song and video, stars as of one of the zombies who returns to their grave at the end of the video, albeit in an uncredited role.
5. Which British broadcaster and journalist, known for his 'Screenwipe' and 'Gameswipe' review shows and as part of the cast of satirical news show '10 O'Clock Live', created the BAFTA-nominated zombie television series 'Dead Set'?

Answer: Charlie Brooker

'Dead Set' follows the events surrounding the contestants of the television programme 'Big Brother' as a zombie uprising occurs. Featuring former real housemates and several celebrities, including Davina McCall, the host of the actual 'Big Brother' series at the time, a group of survivors try to barricade themselves in the 'Big Brother' house and fight off the oncoming zombies while trying not to be bitten and turn into one of the undead themselves.

The creator of the series himself, Charlie Brooker, appears as one of the zombies. 'Dead Set' was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Drama Serial in 2009, but lost out to 'Criminal Justice'.
6. Which novel by Max Brooks is an informative read detailing the dos and don'ts in the event of a zombie outbreak?

Answer: The Zombie Survival Guide

Brooks' 'Zombie Survival Guide', though satirical, provides detailed explanations of how an outbreak might occur, how to fight off infection, and how to defend onself against an oncoming zombie. Additionally, it cites zombie outbreaks from history. The book spawned a sequel, 'World War Z', which instead of being a guide, recounts stories of various zombie outbreaks as told by survivors.
7. In which series of books by Philip Pullman do some characters undergo a process called intercision, separating them from their daemon and effectively turning them into a zombified, soulless state?

Answer: His Dark Materials

In the universe of 'His Dark Materials', humans have supernatural animal companions known as daemons, which act effectively like souls. As such, a person and their daemon can never be too far apart from one another. In the events of the series, some characters are forced into participating in a horrific process called intercision, which in essence separates the participant from their soul.

This, as mentioned above, places them in a state not dissimilar to being a zombie. Additionally, some hostile supernatural beings called Spectres can consume a daemon and render the unfortunate victim soulless.

The protagonist of the series, Lyra Belacqua, doesn't completely undergo intercision, but is forced to leave her daemon, Pantalaimon, behind when she enters the World of the Dead in 'The Amber Spyglass'.
8. American musician Rob Zombie is most associated with which of these musical styles?

Answer: Metal

Rob Zombie has been one of the more popular exponents of the metal music genre, as the lead singer of White Zombie and also as a solo artist, for which he has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. As well as being a musician, Rob Zombie has made his mark writing and directing horror films.
9. In which series of first-person shooter video games, which features titles such as 'Modern Warfare' and 'Black Ops', can players enter a Zombie mode and fight off hordes of zombies whilst mastering many unique weapons?

Answer: Call of Duty

First introduced in 'Call of Duty: Black Ops', the Zombie mode sees players working singularly or cooperatively to defend themselves from a constant onslaught of the undead. This game mode has gained a cult following amongst avid 'Call of Duty' players, and as such, a Zombie mode returned in the next game in the series, 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3'.
10. Players make use of flowers and other vegetation to fight off waves of shambling zombies in the popular video game entitled what '...vs. Zombies'?

Answer: Plants

This popular video game comes under the genre of 'tower defence' games. Players collect sunlight, which can then be used to 'purchase' plants to place on the lawn to defend the house from an onslaught of zombies. Basic plants include peashooters, which, rather unsurprisingly, shoot peas at zombies; mushrooms, which shoot spores and perform better at night; and wall-nuts, which provide a temporary barricade against zombies.
