Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The words "Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus" appear on the Hogwarts School crest (seen at the front of each book). What do these Latin words mean?

Answer: Never tickle a sleeping dragon

Draco - dragon
Dormiens - sleeping
Nunquam - never
Titillandus - tickle.

Never tickle a sleeping dragon! While writing the third book, it was J.K. Rowling's Hogwarts Crest that inspired her to include dragons in the Triward Tournament.
2. When the Knight Bus picked up Harry, there were two men on the bus - what were their names?

Answer: Ernie Prang and Stan Shunpike

Harry had both Ernie and Stan convinced he was Neville Longbottom, until he met up with Cornelius Fudge who called him 'Harry'.

"Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the standard witch or wizard. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I will be your conductor this evening."

"This is our driver, Ernie Prang."
3. There was another passenger aboard the Knight Bus at the same time as Harry, what was her name?

Answer: Madam Marsh

Lamp posts and letterboxes 'jumped' out of the way when the Knight Bus mounted the pavement, so as it wouldn't crash into anything and Muggles wouldn't be disturbed.

"'Best go wake up Madam Marsh, Stan', said Ern."
4. How much did it cost to ride on the Knight Bus?

Answer: 11 sickles for normal transport; 13 sickles for hot chocolate; 15 sickles for hot chocolate along with a hot-water bottle and a toothbrush

It is 29 bronze knuts to a sickle, and 17 silver sickles to a gold galleon. (At the beginning of the book, Ron wrote to Harry exclaiming that his family had won 700 gold galleons in the Daily Prophet Prize Draw, which they spent on visiting Egypt.)

"'Yes,' Harry said quietly. 'Listen, how much would it be to get to London?'
'Eleven sickles,' said Stan, 'but for firteen you get 'ot chocolate and for fifteen you get an 'ot water-bottle and a toofbrush in the colour of your choice.'"
5. What is the street near to Privet Drive where Harry collapsed?

Answer: Magnolia Crescent

"Harry was still several streets away before he collapsed onto a low wall in Magnolia Crescent."
6. The next THREE questions relate to Harry's stay in Diagon Alley. After he gets off the Knight Bus and speaks with Cornelius Fudge, Harry stays at the Leaky Cauldron near Diagon Alley. What number room is he in?

Answer: 11

"Harry followed Tom up a handsome wooden stair case to a door with a brass number eleven on it."
7. What ice-cream shop did Harry regularly visit during his stay at the Leaky Cauldron?

Answer: Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour

Harry used to finish his essays with the help of Florean Fortescue himself, who used to to give Harry free sundaes every half an hour.

"Harry didn't have to do his homework under the blankets by torchlight anymore; now he could sit in the bright sunlight out Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour."
8. Whereabouts in Diagon Alley did Harry go to get his new school robes?

Answer: Madam Malkin's Robes for all Occasions

"There were, however, things Harry needed to buy. As his school robes were all one inch to short in the arm and leg, he visited Madam Malkin's Robes for all Occasions and bought new ones."
9. The next THREE questions relate to Harry, Ron and Hermione's classes at school. What are the three subjects Hermione takes at 9 o'clock on her first day back at school?

Answer: Divination, Muggle Studies and Arithmancy

To manage all these subjects, Hermione had to request a Time-Turner from Professor McGonagall. With this, she turned back time one hour and went to another class, thus learning three times as much which was very tiring, even for Hermione! In the end, it is the time-turner that saves Buckbeak and helps Sirius escape.

"'Hermione, look,' said Ron, 'Your timetable's wrong. They have you down for about 10 subjects a day! See this morning? Nine o'clock, Divination. And underneath, nine o'clock, Muggle Studies. And -' Ron leant closer to get a better look at her timetable, disbelieving, 'LOOK - underneath that, Muggle Studies! how are you supposed to take three classes at once?'
'Oh, don't worry, Ron!' Hermione snapped, 'I told you! I've fixed it with Professor McGonagall!'"
10. During Divination, Professor Trelawney predicted that Harry had seen the Grim. Ron responds that his uncle saw the Grim, and then dies 24 hours later. What was Ron's uncle's name?

Answer: Bilius

While Professor Trelawney had been predicting Harry's death since the start of the term (and was incorrect about it), she also predicted that Neville would smash a plate (which he did), and that someone in their Divination class would leave them around October forever which was also correct, as Hermione left the class).

"'Harry,' Ron said, in a low, serious voice, 'you HAVEN'T seen a great big black dog anywhere, have you?'
'Yeah I have,' replied harry. 'I saw one on the night I left the Dursley's.'
'Hermione, if Harry's seen a Grim, that's - that's BAD,' Ron said. 'My - My Uncle Bilius saw one and he - died 24 hours later!'
11. During Defence Against the Dark Arts, Professor Lupin brings in a Boggart. What does it change in to when Parvati is called to fight it?

Answer: A mummy

Everyone in Gryffindor was awarded five points for tackling the Boggart, even Harry and Hermione who didn't. (Professor Lupin gave them points for answering the questions correctly at the start of the class.)

"Professor Lupin shouted 'Parvati! Forward!'
Parvati shouted 'Riddikulus!' The mummy's head rolled off..."
12. The next TWO questions relate to the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Who are three chasers in the Gryffindor team?

Answer: Alicia Spinnet, Angelina Johnson and Katie Bell

The third book is the first time when the Griffindors win the Quidditch Final AND the House Cup. Harry also receives a Firebolt (from Sirius Black) during this book, after his Nimbus 2000 was beaten to pieces by the Whomping Willow.

"'We've got three SUPERB chasers,' Wood said, pointing at Alicia Spinnet, Angelina Johnson and Katie Bell."
13. What year is Oliver Wood, the Quidditch Captain in the third book?

Answer: seventh

Throughout the Quidditch game in the four books, Oliver Wood stopped the opposition's goal no fewer that forty times!

"Oliver Wood was a burly 17-year-old, in his seventh and final year at Hogwarts."
14. The next TWO questions are about the Hogsmeade village. Who is the waiter/waitress in the Three Broomsticks?

Answer: Madam Rosmerta

To get into Hogsmeade, Harry used a secret tunnel that he found out about from a map the Weasley twins, Fred and George, gave him. It was called a Marauder's Map, and made by Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. (Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs were Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black and James Potter in that respective order - they were all troublesome school mates!)
15. Who used to visit the Shrieking Shack once a month?

Answer: Professor Lupin

At the end of the book, we find out that the Shrieking Shack got its name from Professor Lupin, because when he turned into a werewolf once a month, we would go into the Shack and howl, to wait until the full moon had passed and he could turn back into a wizard again.
