Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which people worshipped the Norse Gods?

Answer: Scandinavian people

The Norse gods were worshiped not just in Norway but also in Denmark and Sweden.

They established many colonies and footholds in the surrounding areas - from Greenland to England - and that is why we know so much about the Norse Gods today.

Many of our days of the week were named after the Norse gods. Tuesday was named after Tyr, the god of war, Wednesday was named after Odin, who was sometimes called Wodin. Thor had Thursday named after him and Friday was Freya's day.

Monday was named after the moon, Sunday for the sun and Saturday is actually the only day named for a Roman god, Saturn.
2. Who was the leader of the Norse Gods?

Answer: Odin

Odin, or Wodin, was acknowledged as the father of the Norse gods.

He was strongly associated with wisdom. He traded one of his eyes for a sip of water from the Well of Wisdom, which was under the roots of the World Tree, Yggdrasil.

Odin was also a shape shifter and god of war, death and knowledge.
3. The leader of the Norse gods had a horse with eight legs.

Answer: True

Odin's horse, Sleipnir, was no ordinary horse. He was the fastest horse in the world and could travel on land, sea and air. He could also move between Asgard, the home of the gods, and the Realms of the Dead.

His "mother" was the god Loki and his father was Svadilfari, a stallion belonging to a giant.
4. Which weapon do we associate with the god Thor?

Answer: A hammer

Thor was the god of thunderstorms. He rode through the dark clouds in his chariot pulled by goats.

He used his magical hammer to make thunder and lightning. The hammer's name was Mjollnir and to use it Thor had to wear a special belt, to make him stronger and special iron gloves to lift it.

When he threw his hammer it came back to him automatically.
5. The god Loki was born a giant and tricked his way into becoming a god. Which of these names was he also known by?

Answer: All of these

Loki was a shape-shifting trickster god. He was portrayed as a cheat, a liar and a thief. He could be said to be the first anti-hero.
6. Baldur was the god of Peace. Who caused his death?

Answer: Loki

Everything in the whole world made a promise not to harm Baldur when he was born. Everything except the mistletoe plant.

Loki tricked Freya, Baldur's mother, into telling him this and then plotted to kill him. Loki sharpened some mistletoe into a dart and took it to where the other gods were having fun throwing things at Baldur. Because everything had promised not to harm him, all the objects turned aside and didn't touch him. Loki gave the dart to the blind god, Hod, and tricked him into throwing it at Baldur, thus killing him.

There was the chance of resurrecting him if everything on the planet grieved for him, but one giantess refused to cry. It was thought that the giantess might have been Loki in disguise.
7. Who, or what, in Norse mythology was Fenrir?

Answer: A wolf

Fenrir was the son of Loki and the giantess Angerboda, possibly one of his wives.

Fenrir was destined to kill Odin at Ragnarok, the end of the world and to prevent this the gods chained Fenrir with a special ribbon.

The bindings were made from "the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, a bear's sinews, fish's breath and bird spittle".

He could not get free from this until the end of the world arrived.
8. What was the name of the snake whose venom was fatal even to the gods?

Answer: The Midgard Serpent

The Midgard Serpent, or Jormungand, was another of the children of Loki and Angerboda, the giantess. It could kill by crushing and also had lethal venom. It was Thor's deadliest enemy.

Odin had the serpent thrown into the sea and it grew so big it completely encircled the earth.

Thor tried twice to kill it and eventually succeeded at Ragnarok, the end of the world. Unfortunately, he was bitten and died when he got nine steps away from the fallen snake.
9. Where did warriors who believed in the Norse gods go when they died in battle?

Answer: Valhalla

Only warriors who died in battle got to go to Valhalla. There they could fight all day and in the evening their severed limbs or heads would re-join their bodies and they could eat and drink all night, boasting about their exploits during the day. Then day would dawn and they would start all over again.

They were actually in training for the battle of Ragnarok, the end of the world. Those who did not go to Valhalla went to the "home of the dead", beneath the underworld.
10. As well as gods and men there were many other races in Norse mythology. Which of these are among them?

Answer: All of these

Dwarves were very prominent in Norse mythology. They were often associated with forging, the underground and magic. It was the dwarves who created the ribbon to bind Fenrir the wolf. A dwarf was sacrificed at Baldur's funeral.

Giants were also very common. Loki married one and had three children with her. Thor was constantly fighting with them and they were on the opposite side to the gods at Ragnarok.

The Valkyries were warrior maidens who served Odin. They chose which fallen warriors to take to Valhalla to await the battle at the end of the world.
