Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gryffindor who ended up on the run with a goblin named Griphook

Answer: Dean Thomas

Dean Thomas, a noted fan of the muggle sports team West Ham United, spent six years as Harry Potter's room-mate in Gryffindor tower (along with Ron Weasley, Neville Longbottom and Seamus Finnigan). However, as he had no knowledge of his father and his mother was a muggle, he ended up on the run from Dolores Umbridge's "Muggle-born Registration Committee" in 'The Deathly Hallows'.

While living rough, he and a goblin named Griphook were captured by the same group of snatchers that also grabbed Harry, Ron and Hermione.

The whole group were then eventually rescued from Malfoy Manor by Dobby the house elf.
2. Toad that had a nasty habit of escaping from his owner

Answer: Trevor

In 'The Philosopher's Stone', Trevor the toad played a key role when he escaped from his owner, Neville Longbottom, on the Hogwarts Express and inadvertently brought about the introduction of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley to Hermione Granger. Along with owls and cats, toads were one of the three creatures specifically mentioned as allowable pets on the letters sent out by Hogwarts to prospective first-year students.

However, these rules clearly weren't strictly enforced as Ron Weasley had brought along his pet rat, Scabbers (who was later revealed to be the animagus Peter Pettigrew).
3. Apparition instructor known for reciting the "three D's"

Answer: Wilkie Twycross

The magical ability to apparate - disappear on the spot and reappear somewhere else - was limited to witches and wizards aged 17 or over who had passed an Apparition Test. In 'The Half-Blood Prince', Hogwarts arranged for a Ministry of Magic instructor to visit the school and teach the skill to the sixth-years. Harry, Ron and Hermione all took the lessons provided by Wilkie Twycross, but Hermione was the only one to pass the test and legally gain the right to apparate - Ron failed and Harry wasn't yet old enough to take it.

The "three Ds" were the key things required to apparate successfully - "Destination", "Determination" and "Deliberation".
4. Metamorphmagus who was killed during the Battle of Hogwarts

Answer: Tonks

Nymphadora Tonks was the daughter of muggle-born Ted Tonks and Andromeda Tonks (nee Black) - the sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy. Known simply as Tonks due to her dislike of her first name, she qualified as an auror after leaving Hogwarts and was the protégée of Mad-Eye Moody.

Her distinctive ability to change her appearance at will was particularly useful for her career, but nearly abandoned her when she was depressed about Remus Lupin's reluctance to begin a relationship with her due to his werewolf status.

In the end, Tonks and Lupin resolved their differences and became a happily married couple with a young son named Teddy; unfortunately, this happiness was short-lived when both were killed at Hogwarts during the final battle against Lord Voldemort.
5. Orphaned boy who later declared "I am Lord Voldemort"

Answer: Tom Marvolo Riddle

The boy originally called Tom Marvolo Riddle became infamous under a variety of names, such as 'You-Know-Who', 'He Who Must Not Be Named' and the 'Dark Lord', in addition to his chosen title of Lord Voldemort. He was the son of a downtrodden witch named Merope Gaunt and her muggle husband, Tom Riddle - who she had tricked into marriage using a love potion. Merope died shortly after her son's birth, but had enough time to name him after both his father and his grandfather (Marvolo Gaunt). Riddle later rearranged its letters to form the phrase "I am Lord Voldemort" and went on to terrorise the wizarding world under that title before his final defeat at the hands of Harry Potter.
6. Member of Dumbledore's Army who belonged to Ravenclaw house

Answer: Terry Boot

Terry Boot was a minor character in the 'Harry Potter' series. He was in Harry's year at Hogwarts but was sorted into Ravenclaw - the house for the cleverest and most intelligent students. In 'The Order of the Phoenix' he joined Dumbledore's Army, a club set up by Harry Potter and Hermione Granger.

The idea of it was to teach students Defence Against the Dark Arts after Dolores Umbridge refused to let them learn any practical means of defending themselves. It was a particularly important project given the fact that Lord Voldemort had recently returned.
7. Slytherin student whose father was a Death Eater

Answer: Theodore Nott

Theodore Nott, often described simply as Nott, was a pure-blooded Slytherin in Harry's year whose father was one of Lord Voldemort's inner circle of Death Eaters. Nott was a minor character in the series, noted only for being able to see the school's herd of thestrals (meaning he must have seen someone die) and for losing out on an invite to Horace Slughorn's 'Slug Club' meetings thanks to his father being imprisoned in Azkaban.

He also had a minor but somewhat critical role in the play 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' as the man from whom the all-important Time Turner had been confiscated.
8. Succeeded Rufus Scrimgeour as Minister of Magic

Answer: Pius Thicknesse

Rufus Scrimgeour only had a short tenure as Minister of Magic as he was tortured and murdered by Death Eaters during the early events of 'The Deathly Hallows' - about a year or so after inheriting the position from the bumbling Cornelius Fudge. He was replaced by Pius Thicknesse, a ministry official who had been placed under the Imperius curse by Yaxley, a Death Eater. Thicknesse was forced to fight for Lord Voldemort in the final battle at Hogwarts, where he duelled with Percy Weasley shortly before the attack that caused the death of Percy's brother Fred.
9. Seer who made the prophecy regarding Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort

Answer: Professor Trelawney

Professor Sibyll Trelawney was the Divination teacher at Hogwarts and ran her classes in a strange, attic-like room at the top of the North Tower. Her teaching methods were not terribly successful, and she had an unfortunate tendency to make incorrect predictions that somewhat harmed her credibility as a true seer.

In 'The Order of the Phoenix' Trelawney was dismissed from her position by Dolores Umbridge for incompetence and replaced as Divination teacher by a centaur named Firenze - although Dumbledore insisted that she be allowed to continue living at Hogwarts.

The importance of her right to remain at the school became clear when it was revealed that she was the seer who had made the prophecy that "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...for neither can live while the other survives". Knowledge of this prophecy directly led to Lord Voldemort's attempt to murder Harry Potter as a baby.
10. Death Eater placed under the Imperius curse by Harry Potter

Answer: Travers

Travers, whose first name was never revealed during the course of the seven 'Harry Potter' novels, was one of Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters. He was first mentioned when he was named as the murderer of the McKinnon family by Igor Karkaroff - an event witnessed by Harry Potter when he took a trip into Dumbledore's pensieve in 'The Goblet of Fire'. Later he appeared in 'The Deathly Hallows' when he took part in the attack on Harry and his friends as they left Number 4, Privet Drive, and when he approached Harry, Ron, Hermione and Griphook as they attempted to break into Gringotts Bank. On that occasion Harry was forced to place him under the Imperius curse to prevent him from foiling their mission to steal one of Lord Voldemort's horcruxes from the Lestranges' vault.
