Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We are getting ready to leave! Any trip can be a little confusing and it is easy to lose things. Which of these is NOT a way you can make traveling easier?

Answer: Arrive at the airport late.

Arriving late is never a good way to start a trip. It can make things more stressful going through airport check ins, lines, and security. Before you travel ask your parents to practice airport routines with you and make a check list of all the things you will need. In most cases, they will be the ones keeping up with all of your travel IDs and plane ticket papers.
2. At the airport there are many people. Kids, what is a good rule to follow when you are around large airport crowds?

Answer: Stay close to your parents at all times.

It is very easy to get lost in a crowd and there are many situations that could be dangerous. Make sure you can see your parents and stay close to them at all times. This will make chances of you getting lost less likely and keep you safe.
3. After you get your tickets, usually the next stop is the security check point. What should you do when you meet the security guards?

Answer: Be polite and do what they ask.

Security can be a little scary but is nothing to worry about. Their job is to check your name, plane ticket, and information. They also check each person to make sure they are safe. Usually the security people will try to keep families together, but if you are separated it will only be for a couple minutes. Follow the instructions of the security guards and they will make sure you have a safe experience.
4. Security scanners check for metal or dangerous objects. Which is NOT a common thing security guards will ask people to do before they enter?

Answer: Sing the alphabet song backwards.

Security's job is to check to make sure no one has anything dangerous that would hurt you or others. Liquids have to be placed in containers in clear bags so they can see what is inside. They will usually check your shoes and your bags by having you place your items in bins. If the metal detector goes off, they will check your clothes to make sure there is nothing dangerous.

After they are done you can follow your parents to the gate.
5. We are finally inside the terminal, the inside of the airport where people wait for planes. Many airports have attractions! Which of these is NOT a common activity you can do with your family at the airport?

Answer: Exploring the runway.

Unfortunately, runways are where the planes take off outside and they do not allow visitors to explore them. Waiting for a plane can be a little boring, but most airports can be a fun place with safe things to do with your family. Many airports have art exhibits and some even have exhibits museums have put on display for a short time. Airports do have restaurants if you are hungry or shops that sell water and snacks. Souvenir shops are where you can buy t-shirts, key chains, postcards, and things to remember your trip later.
6. This electronic object can let you know when the planes are coming in. Which of these is a computer screen that has times and cities of flights coming in or leaving?

Answer: The flight board

The flight board is a screen that shows where planes are coming from and what gate they will be landing at. The gate is where the plane will arrive in the airport. To find your flight, you can look for the city and the flight number on the screen. If your plane is late or arriving it will show on the screen.

It is also good to check the flight board with your parents regularly because sometimes planes can change times or gates.
7. In many airports, you may hear an announcement that the security level is a certain color. Which one of these is NOT a common color?

Answer: Purple

The color alert system tells people the safety level of the airport conditions. Red means that there is danger. Usually when airports are on red alert it means something dangerous is happening. Orange alert is usually the most common and means that there is not a specific danger, but people should be careful. During orange alert there will be many announcements to remind people not to take or accept things from strangers.

It also encourages people to tell someone if there is something suspicious. Yellow alert means that there is no danger but still encourages people to be safe.
8. Oops, I am a little bit lost in the airport. Which of these is NOT a safe person I can go to for help?

Answer: A stranger standing nearby

Kids, you should always stay close to your parents, but if you get lost there are many people who can help. Volunteer guides usually wear vests or a uniform for people to identify them. They have maps and many tools to help a person who is lost. Police officers or security guards can also contact people to help. Desk attendants are usually by the gates and can help you find your way back to the terminal.

They can look up flights and locations. It is never a good idea to talk to a stranger. Do not accept bags, suitcases, or anything from them. Also do not go with a stranger if they invite you to join them.
9. All aboard! The plane is here and it's time to go. There are many people lining up. How will you usually know when it is your turn to board?

Answer: People will often be called in numbered groups.

Planes are a very small space for many people so they usually will call people in groups after people with special needs are assisted. The flight attendants help make sure everything stays organized. Most plane tickets will have a group number printed on them that tells which group you will be in and your seat when you get on the plane. Do not try to cut in line and stay close to your family at all times.

When your group number is called, line up with your things and have your plane ticket ready to show.

The flight attendant will direct you where to go.
10. The plane has landed at its destination and it's time to grab the bags! Which of these is the safest way to get your suitcase?

Answer: Check the bags tags and ask for help.

Many suitcases and bags look very similar. When you see one that looks like yours, check the bags tags for your name and ask for help to remove it. Usually there will be bag attendants nearby to help lift it for you. Do not ever jump on the baggage ramp or wheel.

It can be very dangerous because it is a moving ramp and bags are thrown on to it. It is a good idea to claim your bags as soon as possible because airports remove bags that are not taken right away.
