He died at the end of the sixth book. He planned his death with Severus Snape. After his death the Elder Wand did not belong to Snape because he had not defeated Dumbledore. The wand belonged to Draco Malfoy. Harry later took Draco's wand and this caused him to become the master of the Elder Wand.

This saved his life when Voldemort tried to use the Elder Wand to kill Harry in the Great Hall.
