Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Josefina's oldest sister?

Answer: Ana

Ana was twenty and married. She had two young children, Juan and Antonio. Ana, her husband, and their children lived at the Rancho with the rest of the Montoya family.
2. What did Josefina learn how to do in "Josefina Learns a Lesson"?

Answer: Weave

A storm flooded their village, drowning all of Papa's sheep. They depended on the sheep to make money, so without them, they thought they were lost. But Tia Dolores taught them how to wave blankets from the sheep's wool, so that they could sell the blankets and use the money to buy more sheep!
3. What was the name of the doll Josefina wanted?

Answer: Nina

Mama had made Ana a doll years ago. It became a tradition to pass the doll down to each daughter on her tenth Christmas. But Clara did not want to part with the doll, because it reminded her so much of Mama.
4. Who did Josefina pretend to be in "Josefina's Surprise"?

Answer: Maria

On La Noche Buena, the good night and the day before Christmas, the church had a Posada party. Josefina's job was to dress up like Jesus' mother and ride a mule, as she went from door to door to ask for a place to stay, just like Jesus' mother had to do in the Bible. Josefina felt very grown-up to be allowed to do that, as normally the duty fell upon older girls' shoulders.
5. What was the name of Florecita's kid?

Answer: Sombrita

Florecita was a mean goat who Josefina did not like. But she loved Forecita's kid - "kid" is the name for a goat's baby. "Sombrita" is Spanish for "little shadow", because Sombrita followed Josefina everywhere!
6. Who inspired Josefina to become a Healer?

Answer: Tia Magdelina

Josefina wanted to be a Healer just like Tia Magdelina, her godmother and aunt. She proved it to herself when she helped save Sombrita and her friend, Mariana, from a rattlesnake!
7. What did Patrick O'Toole give Josefina in "Josefina Saves the Day"?

Answer: A flute

An American man, Patrick O'Toole, gave Josefina a bird-shaped flute. Josefina and her family started to trust the man, so much in fact, that Papa trusted him with a very important task for their family's trading business. But it seemed that after that, Patrick skipped town without paying Papa! Was he really as trustworthy as they thought he was?
8. What shape was the milagro Tía Magdalena gave to Josefina in "Changes for Josefina"?

Answer: heart-shaped

A milagro is a small medal used to pray to the saints for help. Tia Dolores gave it to Josefina, after telling Josefina that she was going to leave. She told Josefina that the milagro would remind Josefina not to lose hope and to pray for Josefina's family's happiness.
9. Papa ended up marrying Tia Dolores.

Answer: True

Tia Dolores almost left the rancho in "Changes of Josefina", deciding that the family was fully-functional now and did not need her. But then Papa asked her to marry him, and she accepted!
10. "Josefina" is pronounced "JOE-sef-ina".

Answer: False

In Spanish, the "J" sound is silent, sounding like an "H'. So Josefina's name is really pronounced "HOE-sef-ina", despite having a "J" in it.
