Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ra was considered one of the oldest and most powerful gods by the Egyptians. What was he known as?

Answer: All of these things

The people of Ancient Egypt believed that Ra sailed across the sky every day in a boat. Every night, as the Sun went down, he was thought to die and carry on his journey through the underworld. At dawn as the Sun rose he was born again.
The people thought that if something stopped Ra from returning from the underworld (or being reborn) that the Sun would might never rise again.
2. The goddess Bastet was known as the protector of which animal that the Egyptians held sacred?

Answer: Cat

Bastet or Bast was the protector of cats and the daughter of Ra. She is often shown to have a human body and the head of a cat or lion.
Cats were very important in Egypt because they caught the rats and mice which would eat people's food stores and also spread diseases.
Bastet also accompanied Ra in his boat as he sailed through the sky.
3. Ra might have been the most powerful of the Egyptian gods but he had an enemy that threatened his daily trips across the sky. What kind of animal was his enemy?

Answer: Snake

Apep, the snake, was Ra's eternal enemy and every day tried to stop Ra as he sailed in his boat across the sky.
Bastet, the goddess of cats and Ra's daughter would help him battle with the snake. Ra nearly always defeated Apep but occasionally Apep won.
For the Egyptian people this myth explained why sometimes the sky was stormy and dark and also explained solar eclipses. They believed that the snake had devoured the Sun.
4. Osiris was also considered to be a very important god by the Egyptians. They thought he was the first to do which one of the following things?

Answer: The first Pharaoh (king) to rule their country

According to legend Osiris was the first Pharaoh of Egypt. He taught his people how to worship the gods and how to grow crops for food and many other arts and sciences.
Many Egyptians believed that all their kings and queens were descended from Osiris (and his son Horus) and therefore they were considered gods in human form, and gifted with godlike powers.
Osiris was killed by his brother Seth who was jealous and wanted to be the king, but brought back to life by his wife, Isis, for one day. After that he became the ruler of the underworld and was never part of the mortal (human) world again.
5. Osiris' wife and queen Isis was associated with what?

Answer: All of these.

Isis was a powerful goddess and known for her magical skills. She was also associated with motherhood, peace and medicine.
Many pictures show her wearing a sun disc within two cow horns on her head.
Isis used her magical skills to resurrect her husband after he was killed by Seth and later she gave birth to their child, who was known as Horus.
6. According a common myth, Isis got her magical powers from whom?

Answer: The god Ra

The tale tells of Isis wanting to have the same magical skills as the great god Ra. Isis knew his magical powers were greater than every other god's because he had a secret name.
One day she followed him and, when he dribbled, she collected his saliva and made it into a snake. She then hid the snake where she knew Ra liked to walk.
The snake bit Ra and Ra was in terrible pain. Isis told him what she had done and that only she could cure him with the help of his secret name. Ra had no choice but to tell her the name and ever since Isis has shared his magic.
7. How was Osiris killed by his brother Seth?

Answer: He locked Osiris in a chest or casket and threw it into the river Nile.

Seth produced a beautiful casket and said he would give it to the man it would best fit. Osiris jumped in to find it was a perfect fit. Wicked Seth shut the lid, nailed it down and threw it into the river.
Queen Isis searched and found her husband's body and brought it back to the holy city of Buto, but Seth discovered Osiris's body and cut it into fourteen pieces. The parts of Osiris's body were hidden throughout Egypt.
Queen Isis set out again and searched for many years. Eventually she found all the parts of his body and using her magical powers she resurrected Osiris for one day. She became pregnant and later gave birth to his son, Horus.
8. Horus, son of Osiris, was hidden by his mother, Isis, to keep him safe from his wicked uncle Seth. The goddess Hathor helped Isis. What was Hathor associated with?

Answer: All of these.

Hathor was another important Goddess usually shown as a woman with the horned head of a cow.
She helped to hide Horus in the marshes of the delta of the river Nile until he became an adult. Horus then, after a long struggle, defeated Seth in battle and took his rightful place as Pharaoh of Egypt.
9. The god called Thoth was known for inventing which of these skills?

Answer: All of these.

Thoth was considered to be a one of the older gods and some Egyptians believed it was he, not Ra, who had created the world. Unlike Ra, who was associated with the Sun, Thoth was associated with the Moon. He was also the old god of wisdom.
He was depicted as having the head of a stork or ibis and carrying his writing tools.
One myth said that he was responsible for writing the details of every human life on the leaves of the Tree of Heaven.
10. The Ancient Egyptians believed that when they died they were led to the underworld by the god Anubis for a final judgement. What was the place called where the judgement took place?

Answer: The Court of Osiris

When a person died he was led by Anubis into a tribunal room where he was allowed to speak about his behaviour on Earth in front of a jury of fourteen gods.
He was then taken to the court of Osiris where his heart was placed on a set of scales. The goddess of truth and harmony, Maat, would place a feather on the other side of the scales.
The Egyptians believed that wrongdoings (sins) during life made the heart heavier.
If the person's heart was too heavy, a serpent called Apep devoured it and the person was denied eternal life and their soul doomed to be restless forever.
If their heart was light they were sent on to continue their journey to the land in the West known as the "Fields of the Reeds" where they could grow crops and live in peace for eternity.
