Heckedy Peg tells the mother that she will not let her in unless she takes off her shoes and socks because she they are dirty. But, the mother just hides her legs and crawls inside Heckedy Peg's hut.

The mother remembered that before she left for the market, she asked each of her children what they wanted from the market. So, the mother just matched each food item based on what her children wanted from the market. For example, Monday wanted a tub of butter from the market, so the mother knew that the bread was Monday because bread goes with butter.

10. What happens to the witch at the end of the book?

Answer: She drowns in the river.

When the mother is reunited with her children, she is angry at Heckedy Peg for kidnapping her children and she and her children chase Heckedy Peg towards a bridge, where Heckedy Peg jumps into the river and drowns.
