1. The main characters of the Guara series come from which family?

The Mitchell family comprises parents Jim and Nancy and their four children, David, Valerie, Lesley and Ian. They live on a farm called "Guara" in Tasmania.

2. Put the Mitchell kids in order of age.

Answer: David, Val, Lesley, Ian

David is the eldest, with Val following. Next come Lesley and Ian. David is the responsible one, val is sarcastic and practical, Lesley is a dreamer and Ian a cheeky small boy.

3. Which is the first Guara book?

Answer: "The Gift Wrapped Pony"

"The Gift Wrapped Pony" is the first in the series. and is probably the closest to the traditional pony story of the 1970s. The story concerns the efforts of the Mitchell children - especially Lesley and Val - to save their dotty pony Arum Lily from being sold. Arum Lily is a fence wrecker, and the kids come up with all kinds of ingeneous solutions.

4. What is the name of the pony referred to in the title of "The Gift Wrapped Pony"?

Answer: Shadow

Shadow is the grey pony Lesley acquires from Heather, the vet's daughter. Shadow is to be a companion for Arum Lily and might possibly help to keep her in the paddock.

Lesley calls the rescued runt Skerrick; a reference to her small size. Valleywood Gipsy appears in another of the Guara books, Silverdale is from a book called "The Magician's Box" and Birkin is from "Birkin", by Joan Phipson.

Lesley falls off Shadow and later begins to suffer from nervous problems. She has so much trouble at school that she does correspondence lessons for a time.

Cousin Keith is supposed to come and run things while Jim and Nancy take a long over-due holiday. Keith is late, Jim and Nancy have to leave early... and then Keith can't come at all. The kids decide to manage alone so as not to disrupt their parents' break.

Auntie Joy, known as "Comfort and Joy" is very different from her relatives. She means well, but news that Joy is coming to visit tends to lead to a mass exodus of Mitchell children.
